The San Diego State University (SDSU) files contain materials on the Sycuan Institute on Tribal Gaming administration and research about Native American gaming dating from approximately 2008 to 2010. Materials include SDSU periodicals, newsletters, a conference registration form, Sycuan Institute presentation slides, and course brochures. The materials document Dr. Spilde’s work at SDSU, university administration, and research concentrations of the university.

The anthropology teaching and research files contain materials on anthropological topics, such as Dr. Spilde’s graduate teaching courses, syllabi, and student papers; anthropological organizational booklets; and general anthropology books, articles, and book reviews (1980, 1993-2008).

The Spilde publications include publications written by Katherine Spilde dating from approximately 2000 to 2007. Materials include journal articles on topics such as the socioeconomic and political impacts of Native American gaming, Native American sovereignty, the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, and gaming enterprises by Oklahoma Native American groups. Also included are articles published in Global Gaming Business magazine and the Research and Measurement Issues in Gambling Studies, a book chapter, Dr. Spilde’s notes, and correspondence.

The conference materials include resources and research collected by Dr. Spilde during conferences (1994, 2000-2015). Materials include annual reports, newsletters, biographies, presentations, informational packets, directories, notes, invitations, attendee rosters, conference papers, memos, correspondence, event guides, pamphlets, video and audio recordings of conferences, and newspaper articles from the 5th Annual Alberta Gaming Institute, 12th Annual Indian Gaming Conference, First International Symposium on Economic and Social Impacts of Gambling, International Conference on Gambling and Risk Taking, Global Gaming Expo (G2E), iGaming of North America and Asia, Saratoga Institute on Equine, Racing, and Gaming Law, and 20 Years of IGRA.

The gaming subject files contain materials collected by Dr. Spilde about the gaming industry as well as the advent, regulation, and socioeconomic impact of internet gaming. The subseries contains materials dating from 1975 to 2014, with the bulk of materials dating from 1995 to 2005. The materials include reports; journal articles; fact sheets; Department of Defense press releases and articles; notes; correspondence; video recordings of televised programs about US gaming issues, Native American casinos, the gaming industry in Asia, and the socioeconomic effects of gaming; and internet gaming subject files containing reports, journal articles, conference materials, testimonies, notes, and periodicals.

The National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) subject files date from 1997 to 2011 and include materials produced by and about NCAI and the organization’s efforts to represent the interests of Native American governments and communities. Materials include reports, legislative documents, newsletters, publications, pamphlets, memos, press releases, agendas, informational booklets, and newspaper articles. The majority of the subseries focuses on joint NCAI and National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) projects about health, renewable energy, government-to-government relationships, and Native American sovereignty.

Additional materials relating to NCAI can be found in the National Indian Gaming Association (NIGA) and the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) Joint Task Force files and the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) and Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Data Management, Needs Assessment, and Auditing Workgroup files. Materials directly related to Spilde’s activities as a member of the task force and workgroup were placed in those subseries. Other materials about NCAI were placed in the NCAI subject files.

The regulatory subject files document the federal and state regulation of Native American gaming and the greater United States gaming industry (1789, 1793, 1823-1832, 1851, 1883, 1886, 1903, 1909, 1971-2009). The bulk of materials date from 1990 to 2009. Documents dating from the eighteenth, nineteenth, and early-twentieth centuries are reproductions of Supreme Court opinions and legislative documents. Materials include Senate and House of Representatives bills, court opinions, testimonies before Congress, the Federal Register, congressional records, reports, pamphlets, agendas, informational booklets, press releases, memos, correspondence, notes, legal briefs, and newspaper articles. Materials also document various legal topics such as amending the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act; class II and class III gaming regulations; government-to-government relationships; Department of the Interior secretarial procedures; sovereignty; and trust lands.
