Abstract

Oral history interviews with John Fudenberg conducted by Barbara Tabach and Claytee D. White on May 3, 2018 and May 23, 2018 for the Remembering 1 October Oral History Project. In this interview, John Fudenberg, the coroner for Clark County in Las Vegas, Nevada, gives an account of his experience during the October 1, 2017 mass shooting on the Las Vegas Strip and what his role was during the tumultuous days after the shooting. He explains how he and the staff of the coroner's office prepared for the large number of casualties as well as their arrival at the Route 91 Harvest festival venue. Fudenberg speaks of setting up the Family Assistance Center at the convention center and how it supported the community but also aided the coroner's office in gathering information about the deceased and identifying them. Fudenberg discusses the main job of the Coroner's Office during the first week after the shooting, which was to autopsy the bodies and communicate with the families, as well as the Police Department. He also talks about the emotional impact the shooting and its aftermath had on him and his staff members and the wellness program they implemented, of which trauma yoga and meditation had a large impact.

The Steve Bourie Collection of Casino Brochures (approximately 1970-1992) contains brochures advertising casinos predominantly located in Nevada and throughout the United States that were featured in Steve Bourie's book, American Casino Guide. The collection includes brochures for dozens of casino hotels, riverboat casinos, off-reservation casinos, as well as some general tourism guides.

Grady Aitken oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interviews with Grady Aitken conducted by David Schwartz on June 03, 2015 for the Table Games Management Oral History Project. In this interview, Aitken discusses his upbringing and early interest in the gaming industry. He remembers completing dealing school at the Harrah’s Casino in Reno, Nevada, working for Bill Harrah, and interacting with high profile players. Aitken talks about junkets, differences between casinos in Reno and Las Vegas, Nevada, and the licensing process to become a casino floor manager. Later, Aitken describes the opening of the MGM Grand Hotel in 1993, becoming a pit manager, and auditioning dealers. Lastly, Aitken discusses his role as Director of table games at the Westgate Las Vegas Casino Resort.

She discusses how she started volunteering to teach special education when she was in eighth grade, and how this experience inspired her to become a teacher. She then describes the process by which she served as an elementary school principal in the Waukegan School District in Illinois and worked with early childhood special education programs. She discusses her approach to educational leadership, how her approach has changed over the years, and responsibilities that she faced as principal. She also compares working in the Waukegan School District with working in the Clark County School District (CCSD), and describes the different approaches of each school district.

In this interview, LaBuda reflects upon his more than 20-year career as an elementary and junior high school teacher and administrator with the Clark County School District (CCSD) from the 1980s to the 2000s. He describes the process by which he became a teacher, and eventually a principal, as well as some of the challenges that he faced at different schools. He discusses challenges surrounding cultural diversity, standardized testing, and the 1988 PEPCON explosion. He reflects upon his training that he believes was the most beneficial for his principalship, discusses his approach to educational leadership, and describes expectations that successful principals would commonly face.
