Jarbidge, Nevada Community Archives Collection

Abstract

The Jarbidge, Nevada Community Archives Collection contains scanned images from seven archival collections and document the community of Jarbidge, Nevada from approximately 1910 to 2006. The materials were collected from various families living in Jarbidge in 2006 as part of a project led by Carrie Townley Porter. The images depict early Jarbidge structures, surrounding landscape, the Elkoro Mine, and residents of the area. Also included are images of certificates, correspondence, and newspaper articles relating to the families' histories. Also included in the collection are written summaries of ten oral history interviews of Jarbidge residents conducted in 2006. This collection contains digital surrogates only; the owners and Jarbidge Community Archives retain the originals.

Abstract

The UNLV Libraries Collection of Spanish Broadsides (approximately 1747-1930) consists of gaming-related broadsides published in Spain and Mexico. The documents are proclamations regarding the legality of gambling, owning and operating gaming houses. Many of the documents are signed or decreed by José María de Tornel y Mendívil, a 19th-century Mexican politician. The collection also includes examples of printed games from the early 20th century.

Abstract

The UNLV Libraries Collection of French and Spanish Lotteries and Playing Cards contains hand-painted games and lotteries from France and Spain. Included in the collection "Vida de un Jugador" from Madrid, Spain, as well as "Petit jeu de loterie" and "Nouvelle petite loterie amusante" from France. The collection also contains two sheets of uncut, engraved Piquet playing cards with carciatures of French stereotypes from the French Revolution.

Abstract

The UNLV Libraries Collection of Gambling Related Sheet Music (1890-1987) consists of primarily early 20th century American gambling-related sheet music. This collection is most noteworthy for the covers' bright and colorful imagery, including white gentlemen playing cards, imagery from card and related games, and some with offensive stereotypes and caricatures of African Americans. The material was created by a wide range of designers, composers, and publishers from various places, including New York, New York; Chicago, Illinois; St. Louis, Missouri; Detroit, Michigan; and Williamsport, Pennsylvania. This collection contains illustrations which depict Black and Asian individuals in racist caricatures, photographs of white individuals wearing blackface, and some song titles include derogatory language or racial slurs.

"Help Nevada Get In The Scrap!" Poster

Abstract

"Help Nevada Get In The Scrap!" Poster (approximately 1941-1945) is a single poster produced by the Office of Civilian Defense during World War II as part of the "Victory Home" (V-Home) campaign. The poster outlines what common household items like tin cans, iron and steel scrap, and stockings and rags can be salvaged and sent to war production plants. The poster also lists the five point program of all V-Homes and also includes spaces where households could write the names of their Block Leader, Salvage Chairman, and Air Raid Warden. This poster lists Nellie Cashman of Las Vegas, Nevada as the Block Leader.

Frank Gagliardi Music Manuscript Collection

Abstract

The Frank Gagliardi Music Manuscript Collection (approximately 1964-1974) contains musical arrangements of standard Frank Sinatra songs, printed or photocopied with annotations. Each part is in its own folder, and each song is numbered. Frank Gagliardi performed as percussionist in Antonio Morelli's orchestra for the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he played for Frank Sinatra and other notable entertainers during the 1960s and 1970s.

Hollywood Gambling Movie Poster Collection

Abstract

The Hollywood Gambling Movie Poster Collection (1934-1997) contains film posters, lobby cards, and photographic prints that feature gambling, casinos, or Las Vegas, Nevada. The posters were collected by Steve Lott, CEO of the Boxing Hall of Fame, and include four different sizes including one-sheet posters, three-sheet posters, lobby cards, and 8" x 10" film stills. The majority of the posters feature films produced from the 1940s to the 1960s including Casablanca, Flame of Barbary Coast, Mississippi Gambler, and Frontier Gambler.

Barbara Cloud Personal Papers

Abstract

The Barbara Cloud Personal Papers date from approximately 1880 to 2004 and consist of Cloud's personal research into her family history, as well as her early work as a graduate student at the University of Washington. The collection contains Cloud's thesis manuscript, published doctoral dissertation, and an award given to Cloud by Washington State Historical Society. Materials also include reproductions of family photographs, research files, copies of J. A. Slover's autobiography later published by Cloud and her mother, and Slover's original handwritten autobiography from 1907.
