Abstract

Oral history interview with John McKay conducted by Donna Malloy on March 03, 1980 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In this interview, McKay talks about his experiences living in Las Vegas, Nevada since the 1950s. McKay begins by speaking about his family history, his career in the electronics and engineering field for aerospace, as well as his experiences in two wars. Moreover, McKay speaks about his hobbies of hunting and fishing and his time as a musician around Las Vegas. McKay also spends time going over how the city of Las Vegas has grown and changed, the increase in crime, and the extreme floods in the 1950s. Lastly, McKay talks about the Nuclear Test Site, how casino gaming chips were used as money around the city, how the city of Las Vegas started and the future of the valley. Oral history interview with William McLeod conducted by Valerie McLeod on March 16, 1978 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. McLeod begins by speaking about his career as a contractor, the growth of Las Vegas in the 1960s and the city’s population. Moreover, he speaks about recreational activities such as riding motorcycles and exploring mines around Nevada. McLeod also spends time going over Indian reservations around Nevada and neighboring states, the Lost City in Nevada, boomtowns and ghost towns. Lastly, McLeod talks about the history of water and springs in the state of Nevada, what he would consider to be the Old Ranch and the stagecoaches that passed through Gold Point, Nevada.

Oral history interview with Grove Wilson "G.W." McMillin conducted by W.J. McMillin on February 18, 1975 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. During this interview, G.W. McMillin discusses moving to Henderson, Nevada in May of 1943 to take a supervisory position at the Basic Magnesium Plant. McMillin goes on to discuss the development of Las Vegas, Nevada and Henderson. He also discusses historical events specific to Nevada and his work in law enforcement.

Oral history interview with G.W. McMillin conducted by Dan Morris on March 10, 1975 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. McMillin discusses arriving to Southern Nevada in 1924 and recalls Las Vegas, Nevada as a small town. McMillan begins by speaking about how he ended up in Nevada, his time in Ely, Nevada working for the sheriff and state highway patrol, and his memory of Carol Lombard’s plane crash. McMillan speaks primarily about his time working in politics having worked for two different governors and their administrations. Moreover, he talks about mining and its decline in the state, outdoor recreation and his memories of the atomic tests in Nevada. McMillan ends by speaking about the social changes he has seen, the entertainment of earlier days and the need for feeding range for livestock in Nevada.

In this interview, Marie McMillan discusses life during the Great Depression and World War II. She then talks about marrying Duke Daly, raising a family with him, Daly passing away, moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1961, and working at the Nevada Test Site. She then discusses being a single mother, marrying James McMillan, and her great passion for aviation. She also talks about her role as a leader in the African American community and her flying records.

Oral history interview with Phillip B. McVey conducted by Carl Amante in approximately 1976 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In the interview, McVey discusses his ancestors moving to Nevada between 1867 and 1868 and his birth in Eureka, Nevada. McVey describes graduating from the University of Nevada, Reno, working as a land and water surveyor throughout Nevada, and moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in approximately 1960. Other interview topics include visiting the Las Vegas Mormon Fort with Jim Cashman, Sr., public transportation, environmental and noise pollution, and social acceptance toward minorities within Las Vegas.
