Jewel Maynard Viot was born on August 18, 1931, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Maynard married Sidney on July 12, 1955, and they had three children: Barbara, David, and Carol.
Viot served in the United States Army. Viot also earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering. He worked at General Electric for 22 years. He was a senior engineering specialist at Edgerton, Germeshausen, and Grier (EG&G) for 21 years.
Wendell D. Weart was born on September 24, 1932, in Brandon, Iowa. Wendell had three children from his first marriage: Brian, Kathleen, and Craig. Wendell married his second wife Leanne on August 8, 1981, and they had three children: Heather, Scott, and Randy.
Weart earned a bachelor of arts degree in geology and a bachelor of arts degree in math (1953) from Cornell College in Iowa. Weart obtained his doctor of philosophy degree in geophysics (1961) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Born in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1948, she is the daughter of prominent local attorney Louis Wiener, Jr. After Valerie Wiener graduated from Las Vegas High School, she earned bachelor's and master's degrees in journalism from the University of Missouri and a master's in contemporary literature from the University of Illinois before attending the McGeorge School of Law at the University of the Pacific.
