Scope and Contents

Oral history interview with Matthew Muldoon conducted by Claytee D. White and Stefani Evans on September 5, 2024 for the UNLV Remembers: an Oral History of the 6 December 2023 Shootings project. In this interview, Muldoon, who works with UNLV School of Medicine, recalls the events of the day. On December 6, Muldoon arrived at the Cottage Grove parking lot at 11:35am to prepare for a noon meeting at the Foundation building. At about 11:50am, a colleague came into the building, walking fast and shouting, "Active shooter.” They gathered together in the conference room, listening to the news and communicating with friends and family. After being evacuated to the Thomas & Mack Center, Muldoon could not leave campus due to road closures so he walked across the road to a restaurant to get picked up by family. He did not return to campus until Monday morning, having left Las Vegas to get away with his family that weekend. He describes advocating that UNLV should reimburse private therapy treatments, and mentions the new signage on UNLV buildings that allow newcomers to know the names of the buildings. Since the shooting, he has become more aware of his surroundings and is quieter with strangers, and has increased anxiety about the violence in American society. Digital audio and transcript available.
