Las Vegas,Nevada REVIEW - JOURNAL May 6, 1947 Chamber Directors Talk Water Plans Will Contact Union Pacific with Idea Of Purchasing Las Vegas Land, Water Company Preliminary steps toward the establishment of a water district for the city of Las Vegas which would increase the supply of domestic water, were taken last evening by the board of directors of the chamber of commerce. ' ........................................t After engineers representing Garrett Bromfield and company, | of Denver, had explained the set- Jup as proposed under a prelimjinary survey, it was voted to have the chamber committee constant the Union Pacific- railroad company to determine whether I that organization would be willing to negotiate for the sale of the Las Vegas Land and Water company distribution system to : the district. A. C. Grant, chairman of the I public service committee of the , chamber, was delegated to con- I tact the rail officials and report back to the board of directors i within a week as to the company’s attitude. If the railroad | company is favorable to such negotiations, then further steps will be taken to accomplish the formation of a water district, under | the new statute passed by the recent legislature, and start nego- S tiations for the local water sys- 1 tern, as well as that now in use j at the Basic Magnesium project. , In presenting the engineers’ \ report to the chamber directors ; Grant said the engineers who jj made the survey had struck at j the root of Las Vegas’ trouble in ) ! respect to water and had offered ' f a solution with regard to domes- ! I tic water. He said, however, .that i the problem of industrial water | , had not been solved in the sur- : i vey, but a supplementary probe j probably could be made to bring ! about this development, j He said also that the prelimi- ! nary survey did not bring into • play the development of sufficient water for agricultural use i in the valley and that the further ; study might bring a solution to j j the irrigation of some 1,200 acres I of land in “our front yard coun- i 1 try.” ? 1
