I am very sorry to have to inform you that the Indians would not permit their children to remain at school during the summer vacation. Before the receipt of your letter I talked to them about it urging the good we could accomplish. But they had plenty to eat at home [not legible] and wanted their children at home a little while. They liked the school and would return their [not legible] dress where I wanted them [not legible]. Hearing that I would keep the pupils by force some of the old Indians persuaded some of the bigger boys to run away (the first I have had during the year!) I had the runaways brought back and then expelled.
