    bought him for $100; I also purchased 2 horses at $80 each, making a total expended of $260. This leaves of this appropriation $300 which I suggest be expended in the purchase of two young brood mares at $100 each, and two mulch cows at $50 each. The mules transferred to us while serviceable are old and will not last a great many years. With two good brood mares we could raise our own animals, besides leaching the care of this much neglected (by the Indians) creature. I am [not legible] in a large pasline, so the cost of maintenance of mares would be very small. We have 5 cows on hand but these will
