In the middle of a lake one of the men exclaimed, ?Look, there is a hole in the boat! Neither of us can swim. We must do something quick!? To which the other man replied, ?Why should 1 do something, the hole is not on my side of the boat?? Too often in society we think that other people?s problems don?t impact our lives. We wonder, ?why should I help them? I am struggling with my own needs.? But as the story poignantly illustrates, we are all in the same boat. The economic mess that our society is struggling with is not something that affects ?other folks?, it is impacting every family. Those who have jobs are fearful of losing jobs. Many are under employed or unemployed. There is a lack of confidence in business and government to right the ship, and yet we can not live without hoping that morrow - or the day after tomorrow - II be better. Our tradition reminds us that ?Kol Yisrael Aravim zeh I?zeh-Every Jew is responsible for one another". The tradition also reminds us that the highest form of tzedakah is when we help another become self sufficient. many businesses are letting people go, there are those who are hiring. If you are in such a position or know of a position, please let Christina know so she can help make a match. It is as simple and as profound as that. You should know that between JFSA and myself we made 16 matches before officially launching Project Ezra. It is not as much as I would like, but for those 16 people it is the difference between life and tragedy. Her first week at JFSA she had 28 appointments trying to assist people finding work. The second component of Project Ezra will be financial help to those who need emergency assistance. The details for this are still forthcoming. However you should know that your Federation has made a $250,000 commitment towards Project Ezra which will involve hiring a part time caseworker, a vocational services director and greatly enhanced tzedakah support during this time of need. From my recollection this is the largest grant in the history of our community towards such a project. I am very, very proud. Yom Hazikaron Based on these two values I began to make announcements from the bima starting in November. If you knew of a job or needed a job, please let me know. Quickly I became overwhelmed. I reconceptualized the program and developed a strong partnership with the Jewish Federation, Jewish Family Services and the Board of Rabbis. It is called Project Ezra. Ezra was a prophet who brought hope to the Jewish people in difficult times. His was a message of hope and helping others. Ezra is also the Hebrew for ?help?. Project Ezra will have two components. The first component will be a vocational job flacement service to be housed at Jewish jpnily Services. Christina Primack has been ired to direct this program. Its mission is simple: to help people find jobs. To be successful, we need everyone's help. Beth Falk, Religious School Principal This month I want to introduce one of our Teen Tuesd^^ Teachers, Fran Bromley-Norwood, our Pre-Confirmation qWw grade teacher. Fran has taught for many years here and had several of these students in religious school. In the beginning of the school year, Fran asked the class what they were interested in learning about this year. The majority of the students said that they wanted to learn more about the holocaust because the people who survived were getting older and soon would not be around to share their stories with upcoming Jewish generations. They also discuss Jewish values on a weekly basis and decided that each person would be in-charge of a tzedakah project, in which everyone in the class could participate. Some of these projects included making games for the Family Promise families that stay at our Temple, donating food to JFSA, collecting books for the needy and making cards for sick children. Since their class has focused primarily on the holocaust, they are creating a program for the other Teen Tuesday students for Yom Hashoah on April 21, 2009. So when your teen comes home and you ask what they did at class today, and they reply ?nothing?, there?s really a whole lot of something going on! Yehoshua?s tale is more that just a travelog through the Europe of the 10th century; it is also a meditation on religion, law and the differences between the European Sephardic tradition and that of the Middle Eastern Ashkenazic Jews, differences that echo the current social and ideological conflicts within Israel today. Beth has been an active congregant at CNT for the past 3 years accomplishing so much in such a short time! Her first assignment was assisting with our Annual Mensch of the Year in 2007, and then chairing the Gift Wrap fundraiser in 2007 & 2008. In 2008 Beth was elected to the CNT Board of Directors and continued her involvement in many of the fundraisers and programs the Temple offers. Thank you to all who attended. We staged a fantastic evening of finger foods, wine and cheese, coffee with snacks, and good conversation. We also placed on display approximately 200 pieces of art ranging in price from $20 to $2000. There were Rockwell?s, Neiman?s, and Chagall?s, sports memorabilia, art from Israeli artists, prints, originals, and serigraphs. The evening was filled with auction excitement, good food, and a wonderful team of volunteers, led by Alec Sonenthal. Thanks guys for a great job. During the month of March the Men?s Club produced the most aggressive event in our history. On March 22nd we partnered with Touro University and staged THE HENDERSON HE A L TH EXPERIENCE. This was not your typical health fair. We had dozens of exhibitors, lectures, blood screenings and demonstrations. Dr. Fred Toffel coordinated this extraordinary event and Greenspun Media was our print advertising partner. Along with Greenspun Media, Channel 3 and K-Jul Radio contributed lots of air time to our event and we drew hundreds of participants, lots of give aways and important information on diabetes, cancer, disaster preparedness, insurance, vision, nutrition, and medical assistance. On March 24th, the Men?s Club staged a seminar on the current housing crisis. Guest speakers spoke about loan modifications, short payoffs, credit impacts, financial options and the Housing Rescue Plan. This was a special community presentation on understanding the new financial options that are available, and the government programs that affect them.
