A WWW.LVNERTAMID.ORGTreasurer 2007-08 Temple Board Barry Lewisohn My wife, Luci and I have belonged to CNT for over three years which coincides exactly with the amount of time we have lived in Henderson. We moved here in the fall of 2004 about two weeks before Yom Kippur. The first thing we did was look for a Temple that would meet our needs. Being Reform Jews led us right to the doors of CNT which was located at that time on Emerson Avenue. We felt we belonged right from the start which is why I volunteered to be on the Board after a very short time. I was a Trustee for over 2 years before accepting the position ofTreasurer. We moved here from New Rochelle, NY where we lived for more than 21 years and where we raised our daughter, Avery (29) and our son, Andrew (27). Our daughter and our grandsons, Nikolas (4) and Tyler (2) also live in Henderson. Our son lives in Hoboken, NJ with his wife, Dana. I was born and raised in Brooklyn (Crown Heights and Bensonhurst) and have been a diehard NY Yankee fan since those despicable Brooklyn Dodgers decided to move out of the country and go to Los Angeles. I try very hard to be tolerant of the enemy, i.e. Boston Red Sox fans. I don't understand why the Rabbi won't let us place the Yankee logo on our new Communication Tower and on our large drop- down screens in the Sanctuary. Along with my role as Treasurer, I also volunteer as an AARPTax Counselor preparing Tax Returns free of charge. The program is designed primarily for those individuals who cannot afford to pay a tax preparer. It is probably not a coincidence that my undergraduate degree in Accounting and my graduate degree in Finance led to my position as Treasurer. I look forward to serving the membership of CNT by providing my background and experience in helping to maintain and enhance CNT's fiscal viability. Loosely translated, this saying fcaeans, "Find yourself a Rabbi, and acquire a friend." * As I sat down to write this rabbi's message that expression came to mind immediately. On May 18th a group of several dozen congregants and myself will travel to Wilshire BoulevardTemple to bear witness to the ordination ceremony of graduates of Hebrew Union College-Jewish institute of Religion. It is an exciting and emotional ceremony to watch, but especially so for our Congregants as we share in the joy of Cookie Olshein's journey in becoming a rabbi. Over the years our Congregation has been fortunate to have produced a number of students who went on to serve the Jewish community. Some that come to mind are Cantor Regina Heit, the daughter of Gil Yarchever. Rabbi Joel Fleekop, the son of our educator emeritus Jackie Fleekop, and Cantor Billy Tiep the son of Darin and Nina Tiep. But somehow Cookie is in a different category. She was"one of us". The other students followed the traditional route. They grew up, went to college and on to rabbinic/cantorial school. Cookie was an adult with a professional career as an attorney. Her knowledge of Judaism was minimal. She started coming to Temple after a loss in her family. Coming each week she gradually found herself becoming more and more involved. Eventually she made her way on to ourTemple board and then announced after a time that she would be leaving her law practice to becomea rabbi! In many ways, her story could be"ourstory". Each of us has the potential to change. None of us is ever to old to chase after our life's dreams and ambition. But no one said it would be easy.... Though second career students are now quite common at Hebrew Union College, for most of us this is still not #ie norm. How many of us can imagine the amount of sacrifice it takes to give up ones lifestyle and career to Rtally change directions? To amass the burden of student loans, relocation, and to become of all things"a rabbi"! None of these challenges deterred Cookie. She blazes on as a pioneer for our community and has served as a friend and teacher to many. Unlike any previous student rabbi we have had, Cookie has made it a point to become involved in our Congregation, to teach classes that were unique, and introduce worship techniques that were very meaningful. It has been a personal joy watching her transformation over the years. Her skills and knowledge have certainly grown over the years. And the essence of her kindness and passion for justice has not waned. They have simply become more informed by her knowledge of Judaism. As her sponsoring rabbi, I will have the honor of standing with Rabbi Cookie Olshein at the moment of her ordination. But I know I will not stand alone. I will stand for everyone in our Congregation who is proud of her, and wish her a wonderful illustrious career in the years to come. Rabbi Olshein is and always will be our teacher, and our friend. In the merry month of May, we have a variety of musical services and some special musical events happening - * Yom HaZikaron and Concert (Israel at 60) Wednesday May 7th in the Main sanctuary, featuring ?many of our local Cantors, Cantorial Soloists and guest singers. * Shabbatone Service on May 9th * May 11th (Mothers Day) I'll be singing the National Anthem and Hatikvah at the Israeli Independence Day festivities at the Venetian Hotel. * Our Jr. Choir sings at our May 16th Shabbat Service. On another note, I am thrilled and honored to have been chosen by Michael Isaacson as a featured artist in his new music book with CD, Jewish Music as Midrash. If you recall, we brought him here to be our featured composer at last years' Music Season Sabbath at CNT. Michael Isaacson is a world renowned composer/arranger/conductor. He is the founding Music Director of The Israel Pops Orchestra, and the Milken Archive of American Jewish Music. He has over 500 Jewish and secular musical compositions published, including instrumental, vocal, sacred and secular arrangements, editions and educational works, and has produced over 40 CD's and album recordings. To be selected by Michael Isaacson to be on this publication is truly an honor and elevates CNT to the international level. This new songbook and CD is being distributed worldwide and will be available for sale here soon at $36 each. A portion of the proceeds will go to help music programming at CNT. These past 8 months have flown by and have been fille^ with learning, doing, and most of all - laughter! The staff has become a tight-knit group of friends, all working toward the same goal - the success of this program. The children run in every morning with smiles and an eagerness only a youngster can possess. The parents cannot do enough for us and their children. They know they play a vital role in this educational institution. A native of Boston, Massachusetts, Rabbi Forman moved to Israel thirty-five years ago. Rabbi Forman has been active in human rights and peace movements in Israel. Fie was the founding chairperson of the Jerusalem Council for Soviet Jewry (1973), was chairperson of Interns for Peace (1984-1986) and founding chairperson of Israeli Rabbis for Fluman Rights(1988- 1992), on whose behalf he accepted the prestigious Knesset Peace Prize (1993). He served as a deputy commander in the Israeli artillery corps, receiving a medal for distinguished service. Writing regularly for both the Israeli Hebrew and English press on social, political and religious issues (he is a columnist for the Jerusalem Post), he has lectured internationally on Human Rights and Social Justice (Sweden, Norway, Senegal, England, Jordan, Canada, Ukraine, Russia, Bylerussia, Greece, Japan, United States), including as the keynote speaker at the Nobel Institute in Oslo.
