Seating Is Limited! From The Rabbi Making This Night Different From All Other Nights Soon it will be Pesach. And we will ask the ancient question, ?Why is this night different than all other nights?? It is an amazing question that has peaked a pedagogic response in every age to retell our story. The story of servitude, revelation and redemption. When someone asks what is the secret to our longevity I think Passover says it all. To tell our story is to instill in our children the values that are worth receiving, redeeming and retelling. I see it in the eyes of every B?nai mitzvah parent; and I see it in the eager eyes of most B?nai mitzah students before they are blessed before the ark. They know that they are part of something special. One of the core messages of Passover is that we retell our story not only to remember, but also to act. Because we were slaves, we rescue the enslaved. Because we were hungry, we feed the starving. Because we were denied our faith, we hold it all the more dear. Because we shed tears, laughter permeates every Seder. This Passover I would like you to talk about these values in a meaningful way. Especially the crises of hunger. For many of us this night is no different because once again we are fed and clothed. But for some 38 million Americans, this night, like most nights brings an empty plate. There is one Jewish organization that is focused on combating the social ill of hunger in America and around the world. It is called MAZON. Last year?s Passover appeal raised nearly a million dollars. And while I rarely put in a plea for funds for outside organizations (there are simply far too many, and too many good causes), MAZON is my personal exception. MAZON is an organization that provides grants to existing organizations in wise and strategic way to help millions of poor and hungry people. Last year MAZON gave out $3 million dollars in grants and an additional $ 1 million for ^ Hurricane Katrina relief. I urge you to help. In the words of our tradition, ?Let all who are hungry come and eat.? We have so much, we can do no less MAZON 1990 South Bundy drive Suite 260 Los Angeles, CA 90025. i-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------1 I PASSOVER 5766/2006 I B?shalom Rabbi Sanford Akselrad ______A check payable to MAZON is enclosed ______Please charge my credit card $ ______Visa______MC______Discover____AMEX Credit Card Number:_________________________ EXP:_______________________________________ Name______________________________________ Address____________________________________ City, State, Zip______________________________ Name of Congregation, City, State_____________ Please send to MAZON at 1990 S. As we all know our forefathers spent 40 years wandering in the desert. It is not unlike our situation as a community this year. We wander from King David on Friday night to Gibson Elementary on Sundays. We stop over at the Flamingo Library or Anthem Center and of course our main camp (office) on Green Valley Pkwy. However, I can guarantee we won't wander for 40 years but maybe another 40 weeks or so. We will then enter "the promised land" - a beautiful new campus at 55 N. Valle Verde Dr, in Henderson. During the next nine months a lot will happen. First the nominating committee is working right now to put together the slate of officers and trustees who will lead us as we enter our new home. As I mentioned before the staff and the board are working on transition planning so that our programming will be as great as our new home. The finance committee is putting together a budget to operate our new home. While all of this is happening we are maintaining a full calendar of programming. So this year during your Seder whether at home or at Green Valley Ranch, and you hear the story of what our ancestors went through when THEY wandered the desert for 40 years, our tasks will seem easy. We have worked hard to get to this point, have overcome adversity but we still have much to do. NOW is an excellent time to GET INVOLVED with temple life. There is plenty to do and there is something for everyone. Finally I want to thank Ayelet who, for personal reasons, will be leaving us at the end of the school year. You have taken our school to a new level. We have been interviewing for a new Education Director and I hope by the time you read this I will be able to announce who that will be. Happy Passover to all and may your wanderings always bring you home.
