She has been a friend, a teacher, and a mentor. She lovingly refers to each student as ?her child? because she loves and cares for each of them as if they were her own. She always has an open ear, friendly advice, and has built a great rapport with ?her kids? and their parents. Her love for Judaism and teaching helped bring our religious school from 60 students to over 300 at it??s peak! Diligent when it comes to working with the children of CNT, she has instilled a love of Judaism in them that will last a lifetime. This is true as well for the many adults she has taught over the years. Join us as we honor this woman of valor, innovator and excellence in education, and bestow on her the title of ?Educator Emeritus? Shavuot Service and Program Sunday, June fSth ~ 7:00 pm Lois Bergman to be Honored at Annual Meeting/Brunch June 12 ~ 10:00 am Miss Lois, as she is fondly known by her many students and around the temple, came to work at CNT in February of 1998 and has been our Pre-School Director for the past 7 years. While she did help establish the Pre-School, she has also taught religious school for the upper grades, adult education classes, and Jewish cooking classes. Miss Lois also started up the CNT Camp Chaverim Summer Camp program in 1999 for children ages 2-1/2 to 9 years old. She has been a guiding light to the children of CNT and will be greatly missed. Please join us at the Congregational Meeting as we honor her many years of joy and service to our congregation.From The Rabbi This month brings with it two major transitions within our Temple Staff family. After nearly 12 years of service to our Congregation, our Temple Educator, Jackie Fleekop has retired and will become our Educator Emeritus. Secondly, after seven years of service to our Temple, our Preschool Director Lois Bergman will also be retiring. I want to take a moment to say something about each of these wonderful individuals, Jackie has been my friend, colleague, and confidant since the first day that she arrived at the Temple. I remember when Cal Lewis and I interviewed Jackie for the position of educator. After she left the room. Cal exclaimed, "Boy Rabbi we got to get her on our staff. We would be lucky to have a person like her with all of her experience." Cal was right. We were lucky to have someone who we have affectionately nicknamed the "energizer bunny" to lead our school with such vim and vigor. Always creative, always willing to try new ideas, and always looking for the best teachers for our school, Jackie raised our school from a small student body of about 60 students to over 200 students. In addition to running our school, Jackie has run our Youth Program and taught in our adult education program for many years. There are many, many students both young and old who have been inspired by Jackie in their commitment to Judaism. Lois too has been a blessing for our Congregation. Working with the little ones, it could be easy to think that pre-school is all play. A piece of cake. But let me tell you, it is hard work and long hours. Lois is often the first one to arrive at Temple and one of the last to leave. She has shown creativity, patience, and an unsurpassed love of children in every way possible. Known throughout our community as a top Preschool teacher/director, Lois has literally brought hundreds of children (many of whom are now committed adults) into their first rich Jewish experiences. We will be honoring both of these remarkable women on the weekend of June 10th. Jackie will be honored on June 10th during a special Shabbat service in her honor. Lois will be honored on Sunday June 12th at our annual meeting, which begins at 10:00 a.m. Please make a special point to attend both of thej^ events to express your appreciation and fond memories to Jackie and Lois. We will miss their daily participation in our Temple affairs, but wish them both much joy in the years ahead. We look forward to their participation, as they desire, in various Temple programs and activities. It will begin "in the beginning" with how to identify and pmnounce each letter and c^Bnue with learning basic Hebrew words. This class will give you the keys to unlock the Jewish prayer book. Welcome Back Rabbinic Intern Cookie Olshein Starting in June, Rabbinic Intern Cookie Lea Olshein will once again begin her duties as our summer rabbinic intern. A past Vice President of our Congregation, Cookie has completed her second year of rabbinic school at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. She will start her duties in June and continue through much of the summer. Please join in welcoming Cookie back to our Congregation at Shavuot Services on June 12th. As a summer intern with our Congregation Cookie will be exposed to the full range of rabbinic responsibilities. Cookie will be teaching many classes on Monday evenings: Conversion Class, Adult B?nai Mitzvah, and her Summer School programs. She will also be teaching a seven-week Beginning Hebrew course. In addition to teaching, she will be assisting Rabbi Akselrad in many ways including pulpit duties, hospital visitations, tutoring b?nai mitzvah students and participating in life cycle events. In the fall, Cookie will return to her Rabbinical program at HUC- JIR?s Los Angeles campus. CNT MEN?S CLUB PRESENTS ?TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME!? August 14, 2005 Join us for another day trip to see the LA Dodgers vs. the New York Mets. We will meet here at 6:30 am and return around 9:30 pm. Fun for the whole family! Last year there was a FULL bus!Philip?s Message Just a Calling all singers. We are preparing to gear up for our High Holy Day Adult Che and we need Sopranos, Altos, Tenors and Basses. This is a wonderful time to be a part of the CNT Adult Choir and share in the reverence and beauty of the High Holy Days. If you've ever wanted to be a part of this incredible choir, we need you. Rehearsals are beginning July 26th and continue every Tuesday night from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Beit T'fillah. You will be supplied with everything. Just bring your beautiful voice and the desire and dedication. As we come in to the summer months I want to recognize some individuals for their hard work and dedication over the past year. First I want to thank Lillian Kollar for her amazing talents and incredible musical ability. She is one of the best accompanists I have ever worked with and I greatly appreciate her. Thank you so much Lillian. I want to thank Lev Mallinger and Lori Frankl for their wonderful job of tutoring the B'nai Mitzvah students. You are both great. I also want to thank Lori Frankl for her conducting the Junior Choir and the Teen Choir. They've never sounded better. And speaking of choirs, our fabulous Adult Choir deserves a round of applause for their hard work over this past year (since High Holy Days) you all are the best. Thank you to all. Thank you to Rachael, Hillary and Sarah for their wonderful song leading and teaching in the Religious School, and all year long. I would also like to thank all of the members of the Shabbatones band, who volunteer their talent and energy into this program: Ira Spector, Jay Poster, Glori Rosenberger, Alan Molasky, Ed Birch, Brad Torchin, Mike Adler, and Linda Terry. Without all of their enthusiasm and hard work, there would be no Shabbatones. We have grown together as a band and as friends. On a personal note, I want to express my thanks and gratitude to Jackie Fleekop and Lois Bergman foj^ their kindness, teaching and caring in the short time that I've been here and have gotten to know them. I play the trombone in the Becker Symphonic Band, the Becker Jazz Band and the Clark County Honor Band. I also play the piano. My hobbies are playing softball, baseball and swimming, and being with my friends and family. I look forward to becoming a Bat Mitzvah on June 18th. I hope you can join me on this very special occasion. May was a big month. We had an awesome time at our retreat in Mt. Charleston! We also elected Hilary Scheele and Adam Bromberg as the new NTTY Co-Presidents for 2005- 2006. Mazel Tov to Rachael Alterman for being elected Regional Vice President of Membership of NFTY. Jolie Robert Cohen June 25,2005 On Saturday, June 25,1 will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah. My parents are Debra and Mitch and I h?^ an 11 year-old sister, Lanie. I a^rnd Greenspun Jr. High School and I love history, reading and playing computer games. I have been taking drum lessons for a year too. For my Mitzvah project I chose to be a pen pal and sponsor a bar/bat mitzvah for a child in Israel. Alhadeff A Leadership Opportunity for NFTYites Calling all teenagers! June 2 0 0 5 5 Your Executive Director A Salute to Dads & Grandpas This month I want to write to all the Dads and Grandfathers who make the world go ?round. Am a Dad myself of a 23'yeauold son and lAyear-old daughter, I am familiar with the ups and downs o! Fatherhood (but not yet Grandparenthood, whew!). I recall the joy of riding on my own Grandpa?s lap in his plumber?s truck as he let me ?drive? (meaning steer) around his neighborhood, and the excite' ment of spending time with my grandparents at the shore when they were managers of summer rental units in NY. I also remember my other Grandfather pinching my cheek so hard it hurt, as he showed me his love (didn?t like that too much), and the joy of going bowling with my own dad on Saturdays, after we worked in the warehouse of his company, picking and packing orders of merchandise. Some of these memories are what make me ?me? today, and I fully appreciate those memories, and those men in my life. Fathers, grandfathers, father ?figures?, older brothers, mentors, step-fathers, uncles, coaches, even our forefathers - there are so many types of male figures who influence us, our children and the world around us. With blended families and various configurations of families today, it?s difficult to think of all the males who might influence us, and in ways we don?t even think about. As Mitch Albom wrote in his ?The 5 People You Meet In Heaven?, we usually aren?t aware of those people around us who influence us, in so many ways and forms. (And thank you, Eddie, for watching over those generations of kids, and making all of the rides safe for them). Be it teaching by example, by speech, or by activity, those men who have helped to shape us deserve the recognition of ?Thank You?. So, knowing most Dads and Grandfathers want to keep things short and simple, let me, shortly and simply say, ?Thanks, guys, you?re terrific?, leave it at that, as we enjoy our men on Father?s Day. President?s Message June is a time of change at CNT. It is the beginning of summer and the end of the traditional school year. In Las Vegas, many travel to other areas where summer is not so extreme. It is also when we have our annual meeting and elect our temple leadership. I would like to start by saying THANK YOU to Jackie Fleekop who you all know has retired as our Education Director and now assumes the title of Educator Emeritus. Jackie has taken our religious school from 60 children to over 300 at its peak. She has inspired and taught a generation of our children and for that we owe her a debt of gratitude. There is a committee working on hiring a new Education Director and should have an announcement soon. For those of you who are not leaving Las Vegas this summer we will once again have Cookie Olshein as our rabbinic intern. I know her sermons will be passionate and inspiring. She will also be teaching adult education classes Monday and Tuesday evenings from June 20 through August 2. Watch the Bulletin, the Happenings, or Roberta?s weekly e-mail for details of everything going on this summer. This year for the first time we will publish an abbreviated bulletin in July. No articles or stories, just a schedule of events. During our Annual Meeting and Brunch June 12, at 10 am, the new board of trustees will be voted on and installed. The nominating committee has put together a terrific slate of officers and trustees. Those who have agreed to serve will work hard, be confronted with difficult decisions sometimes, and leave temple with the feeling of accomplishment, fulfillment and a little tired. But I would not trade my time serving this congregation for anything. For those who are leaving the board we also owe you our many thanks for a job well done. Being Jewish and living a Jewish life means doing it all year long. It is easy to look at summer vacation as a time away from the synagogue. I am suggesting you come and enjoy the same quality inspiring and spiritu^ programs you do during the rest of the year. I wish everyone a fun safe and COOL summer. With the knowledge that I had been voted into this new role, came the understanding that I was arcepting an awesome responsibility. When I was elected Sisterhood President a year later, my dreams mingled with reality i^Planned and set goals for the coming year. Much of my term has been focused on introducing and implementing an attendance incentive program I developed called, TheEchad Initiative. I wanted to help our membership grow into an organization that was dedicated to serving our congregation and the Jewish Community by being part of the Sisterhood Community. The desire to increase community involvement has made it possible to build stronger relationships with the other auxiliaries in our congregation. Our first joint venture was held last July when Sisterhood, Men?s Club and the Temple Membership Committee hosted an extremely successful barbecue and game night. A few months later, we worked with the Religious School Committee coordinating parent volunteers who helped prepare apples and honey for Rosh Hashanah. Additionally, Sisterhood has assisted other auxiliaries this year by providing financial support for the Sukkoth Family Dinner and the Candidates Forum. Individually, Sisterhood members offered a helping hand during the Temple?s annual Gift Wrap Fundraiser, and as a group by donating their time and energy to bake and sell the Hamentashen that were available at the Purim Carnival. It is easy to see how our Mission Statement, ?Many voices, many hands, today?s women embracing a shared vision,? describes our Sisterhood. To sponsor and participate in such a variety of programs requires the support of many dedicated women. If I?ve been able to achieve any measure of success as Sisterhood President by increasing the involvement of our members, it is because I have had the good fortune to work with a wonderful Board as well as many amazing women who have mentored me during my tenure with Sisterhood. I thank you all for your help and guidance. To the Men?s Club and other auxiliaries who I have worked with, it has truly been a pleasure. Together we have demonstrated why Congregation Ner Tamid is a ?special place to belong?. Homeless families come to our synagogue each evening for a week, enjoy a hot meal, sleep in one of the classrooms, and then return to a day house each morning. Volunteers are needed to spend one night with them at the temple and bring hot meals to the temple for them in the evening.
