Until We Meet Again As I sit down to write my last column for the bulletin, I am reminiscing about my first column. How long ago that seems, and, yet, it was only a mere three years ago that I first came to CNT. I remember how excited I was knowing what a great opportunity it would be to be a member of this wonderful congregation. Looking back at my time spent here, I know that my life has been enriched and my rabbinic knowledge and experience has grown. In Hebrew, there are two special words for saying good-bye. The first one that I know everyone is familiar with is shalom. Shalom, though, does not just mean good-bye. It also means hello and peace. The root of the word shalom is shalame meaning whole. Thus, when one says shalom to another, one is not just saying good-bye but also wishing one a sense of wholeness to one?s life. Therefore, as I take my leave of Congregation Ner Tamid, I wish each and everyone shalom: good-bye, peace, and wholeness. There are no words that can truly express everything that I am feeling right now. I truly appreciate everyone?s support as I begin preparations to move to my new congregation. Yet, the members of CNT will always hold a very special place in my heart. As many of you know, I take my leave as our congregation goes through some reorganization. To every period of growth and adjustment is a time of change. I know that CNT will come through this period of change with a healthy perspective and vision for its future. There are very exciting times ahead as the congregation prepares to move and incorporate new types of programming. I hope to hear all about it as the dreams come to fruition. I would be remiss if I did not take this moment to thank some very special people. I thank Rabbi Akselrad for his guidance during the past three years. It has been wonderful to work with such a great colleague. Philip, thank you for helping my spirit soar with every note you shared during services and during regular workdays. Irv, you kept us organized and on task. Jackie, we have been friends for so many years. It has been wonderful to learn from and work with such a wonderful friend. The temple board has never directly solicited our membership for money for other organizations, and we do not sell or rent our mailing list. Recently, something has caused the board to review that policy. We still do not sell or rent our list, however the board felt one cause came along that required we ask our members directly to give money. The Union for Reform Judaism, more specifically it?s president Rabbi Eric Yoffie, at the Biennial convention in Minneapolis asked each congregation to go home, and ask each one of it members to give money to promote Reform Judaism in Israel and the former Soviet Union. He acknowledged how much each congregation could use additional resources, but this was different. You recently received a letter containing all of the details of Rabbi Yoffie?s initiative. It is sometimes difficult to accept that reform Jews are not recognized as a Jew by the government of Israel. But there are young reform congregations forming and they are determined to see this changed. As our congregation approaches its thirtieth anniversary, let us help these congregations past the tough, early years. Many of our long-term Congregants remember what CNT went through in the early years. How can you help? Send a check for Chai, more if you can, less if you can?t, payable to CNT to the temple, Attn: YOZMA. We will then forward on one large check from our congregation. Please help others to worship as we do and be recognized as a Jew. You can also help promote Reform Judaism on a local basis by supporting our preschool. Preschools are an important way for congregations to young families involved in temple life. When a parent brings a child for eSJ education at a temple, that child learns the importance of their Judaism. Our preschool started five years ago under the direction of Lois Bergman. Miss Lois, as she is known, is the foremost authority in Las Vegas on early education for Jewish children. There are many members of our congregation that Miss Lois taught and now she is teaching their children. Our preschool has become a destination school. For the same reasons we are moving the temple, our preschool is not filled to capacity. This has some advantages - a smaller class size provides personalized attention for each child. The children learn their ABC?s, they have computer class, learn to read and of course there is recess. But they also learn about all of the Jewish holidays and traditions. This early start forms the foundation of their Judaism for life. Again you may ask what can you do. Talk about our school and its advantages to others. If you have grandchildren, talk to your children about sending them to our temple for preschool. Talk to your friends; tell them to give us a look and check out our school. If you are one of the many of us whose children have graduated from our school, tell others what a wonderful experience your kids had. Remember, this is how we will assure the continuation of Reform Judaism in Las Vegas. Every month, a very dedicated group of twenty Congregants get together to look after the temple. A past Vice President of our Congregation, Cookie has just returned from Jerusalem having completed her first year of rabbinic school at Hebrew Union College- Jewish Institute of Religion. Cookie will start her duties in mid June and continue through much of the summer. Please join in welcoming Cookie to our Congregation at Shabbat Services on June 18th. As a summer intern with our Congregation Cookie will be exposed to the full range of rabbinic responsibilities. Cookie will be teaching two classes on Monday evenings: Introduction to Judaism and ?Aleph isn?t Tough - An Introduction to Hebrew Reading Skills for Adults?. Cookie will also be teaching various classes throughout the summer which deal with her many varied experiences in Israel and the former Soviet Union this year. In addition to teaching she will be assisting Rabbi Akselrad in many ways including pulpit duties, hospital visitations, tutoring b?nai mitzvah students and participate in life cycle events. Beginning this fall, Cookie will spend the remaining four years of her Rabbinical program at HUC-JIR?s Los Angeles campus. The word thanks does not say enough. And, to all of our Congregants: thank you for opening your hearts to me. I have often looked at life and my path through the rabbinate as a journey. Congregation Ner Tamid has been a wonderful part of the journey that is still unfolding. So, you may be wondering what that second word is in Hebrew that means good-bye. That word is L?hitraot. Yet, I?hitraot does not really mean good-bye. Instead, it really means ?see you later.? Please know that I will think of you often and will only be an email away. So as I depart, I simply say, ?L?hitraot" - until we meet again A S p e c ia l P I ace T o B e lo n g rm Executive Director's Message ' ? ?THANK YOU? ; ':: ^ I am guessing that you?re probably relaxing somewhere comfortable while reading this column, but I?d wager (if I gambled) that you probably aren?t familiar with all the planning, teamwork and effort it took to get this column to you, as well as all of the other services that the temple provides. The unsung folks who make this happen are the loyal, caring and dedicated staff and volunteers who all work behind the curtains to make the magic, ?Magic?. Congregants seldom see our staff or volunteers as they go about their duties, but among the tasks and chores, (and this is not an end-all list, by any means, but only a sampling) are those who answer our phones, stuff our bulletins, write and print our weekly Temple Happenings and monthly Bulletins and all the fliers that we distribute, prepare our wonderful Onegs, prepare the building for all of our various programs and events, sing like Angels (be it our junior or adult choirs or our wonderful Shabbatones), process all payments (and THANK YOU for making those payments!), schedule our Rabbis appoint?ments, usher at High Holidays, prepare the sermons and learn new music (Thank you, Rabbis and Philip), plan and design our new facility and campus, prepare our children for their Jewish lives (a BIG one here), comfort those who need comforting, and coordinate all the meetings, calendars, and various programs that we do each week and month. Whew! (In the famous words of Elaine on Seinfeld, ?yada yada yada? - I could go on and on, listing everything we do, but by now, I hope you get the idea.) As you have gathered, we are very thankful and appreciative of our staff and volunteers, and without everyone pitching in and doing what they can, we wouldn?t be the social gathering place, the religious home, and the learning center that we all depend on here at CNT. Teamwork, cooperation, caring^ dedication and a feeling of wanting to give of oneself to help others is what makes us here at CNT special. We are very proud of our hardworking, dedicated team, and I wish you could see them in action because only then could you really understand and appreciate just what it takes to have us function so well and so smoothly to make the magic happen, ?behind the screen?. This is a wonderful time to be a part of the CNT Adult Choir and share in the reverence and beauty of the High Holy Days. If you?ve ever wanted to be a part of this incredible choir, we need you. Rehearsals are beginning July 13th and continue every Tuesday night from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Beit T?fillah. You will be supplied with everything. Just bring your beautiful voice and the desire and dedication. As we come in to the summer months I want to recognize some individuals for their hard work and dedication over the past year. First I want to thank Lillian Kollar for her amazing talents and incredible musical ability. She is one of the best accompanists I have ever worked with and I greatly appreciate her. Thank you so much Lillian. I want to thank Lori Frankl, Laurel Lardent and Melissa Roth for their wonderful job of tutoring the B?nai Mitzvah students. You all are wonderful. I also want to thank Lori Frankl for her conducting the Junior Choir and the Teen Choir; they?ve never sounded better. And speaking of choirs, our fabulous Adult Choir deserves a round of applause for their hard work over this past year (since High Holy Days) you all are the best. Other synagogue choirs may come along, but with hard work and dedication, we?ll remain the best. Thank you to all. On a personal note, I want to express my thanks and gratitude to Rabbi Weiner for her kindness, teaching and caring in the short time that I?ve been here and have gotten to know her. We are planning many activities including movies, card games, mah jong, trips to Mesquite and Laughlin, outings to sports events, discount shows and dinners, guest speakers, group discussions on current events and much more. Our prophets have taught: God commands us to ?share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless into your house?(lsaiah 58:7). This is what we did the first week of May when we hosted the homeless families from IHN. How proud we are, as Host Co-coordinators, when the families tell us that our congregation is the friendliest, the food is the best, and how welcome they feel at our facility. We are so grateful for the wonderful volunteers who provided the excellent meals, slept over at the Temple, or donated money so that Congregation Ner Tamid can continue to participate in this wonderful project. Jennifer and I can not do it without your help. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts and encourage more Congregants to get involved with IHN. We will be hosting again August 29 through Sept 5. Hopefully we will see many new faces from CNT at that time. Again, thank you for a job well done. Bette Stahl and Jennifer Cohen A S p e c ia l P I ace T o B e lo n g Lists - On/Off When I speak to family members or friends, the topic of lists often comes up. "I don?t know how I got on to that list or this list!", "Who sold my name to that organization or charity?", "Why do I still get so many E-mails or flyers?", "I never signed up for that!" So many lists have our names on them!! I happen to be a person who is always making lists. There are lists of tasks I have to do and calls I have to make. One list has cards that I need to mail and gifts I need to send. There are many lists we should be taken off of, but there is one you need to get on right NOW! ?The School Enrollment List? We all want the best for our families; we all want them to have a better life than ours. Our children deserve to have all the good times we had and the great memories too. Parents having a difficult time with their pre-teens often ask me ?What age do they get to be mouthy? Please help me make my child into a mensch?. There is no simple o, magic answer. It takes family, friends, teachers and a lot of prayers. Children and adults alike do not like getting up early on Sunday, but we only have seven days on a week and veiy busy schedules. So please remember when you speak to your child, tell them that them a Jewish education is on G-d?s list. Also remember our school is not your old Hebrew School, in your Dad?s old shul. It?s not even in youi grandfather?s old city. Las Vegas is different - new, great - and so is our school. We want our students to have fun as they are learning. Studying prayer, Hebrew and history as well as modern Jewish thought will give a level of spirituality to your child in a materialistic driven world. Make sure you?re on the right list. ?Congregation Ner Tamid?s Religious School? list, so that we can provide proper staff and materials for your child. The summer months are here and our preschool year is coming to an end. It has been a year of fun and excitement, growth and learning, for our students as well as our staff. What a great year! I really want to thank so many individuals who helped to make our year such a success. You taught, assisted, carried, moved, painted, wiped away tears, fixed broken hearts, broken toys and broken furniture. The children and I love all of you and thank you for being sooo wonderful. A special thanks to the ladies in the office, Mary, Roberta, Karen, Angie, and Jackie Fleekop. I couldn?t have done it without you. Irv Duchowny, our Executive director, has been helpful in supporting our school and keeping us organized. Rabbi Akselrad has been there to guide, offer support, and lend a helping hand. I am very happy that I just happened to be President while all of these wonderful things occurred.... For a list of accomplishments, please refer to the annual report on the back of the Sisterhood newsletter, enclosed in the bulletin. But for now, The Top 10 Important Lessons I Learned as Sisterhood President: #10: Remember that old saying about the word ?assume?? It?s true. Never assume anything. # 9: You can?t please everyone, but you can try. # 8: There is a nice way to say ?no?; and a nice way to say ?yes? # 7: Nothing can replace the personal conversation. # 6: If you need help, just ask ; if you don?t ask, you?ll never know. # 5: Never forget to say ?Thank You?. # 4: People can become what you expect them to be. You just need to let them know what that is, and be flexible enough to adapt for human limitation. # 3: Never trust what you ?hear?; always go to the source. # 2: Communicate, Coordinate, and Communicate again. And, the # 1 important lesson I learned as Sisterhood President -- It?s not about what we want ?now?; It?s all about looking ahead and building a future. I invite all of you to take a significant role in that future; find your niche and participate. Help shape your religious future and that of your children. C o n g reg atio n "N er T a m id Shalom....and Thanks A little over five years ago I decided to ?meet the guys?. Shortly after joining Ner Tamid I was asked to attend a brotherhood meeting. Since we had just moved to the Las Vegas area and I was eager to make new friends I said sure. It was probably one of the best decisions I have ever made. Meeting new friends was easy. Here was a small group of men who were looking to rebuild brotherhood and a sense of camaraderie and friendship developed. Holding several jobs and doing many special projects gave me the opportunity to get to know more of our members and realize what a really special group of people make up our Men?s Club. My term as President ends in June and this is my last article. It is probably the hardest to write since I have so many great memories. Of everything we have done, the thing I am most proud of is that this group of men has once again made the Men?s club an important and integral part of temple life. Today we take for granted a dynamic Men?s Club with over 100 members. We see them ushering, putting up the Sukah, sponsoring special events and speakers, encouraging camaraderie with golf tournaments and dinners and donating time and money to make our congregation special. A new administration under the leadership of Fred Toffel is ready to begin. Stuart Solomon who is moving to Vice President will assist him. Fred has put togethe^p great board and I will not steal his thunder by revealing who the new people will be. I feel very confident that they will do a great job. It is a job they cannot do by themselves. Why don?t you become selfish and begin contributing to Men?s Club. I say selfish because what I have learned is that whatever you give you get much more back. One outstanding example of unselfish contribution to the Men?s Club is David Nathan. David has been selected to receive the Leo A. Wilner Man of the Year Award. David has served as treasurer for the last two years but more importantly he has been our conscience. We know that David is always the one to ask: Is this the best way we can spend our money? What more can we do? How can we make it better? David is also creator of our Health Fair. This event typifies his approach. He wanted to create something that would fill a void and be of real benefit to the entire temple. This would be enough for most of us but David also insisted that it be profitable. It has proved successful on both measures. Congratulations David.
