We would go to temple arriving late at night, and the temple seemed a bit darker than usual. One could feel that something special was about to happen. The Rabbi would begin in a somber voice and speak about the tradition of Selichot. He told us that it was the beginning of the High Holyday season and he impressed upon us that it was now the time to ask for forgiveness. Then the Ark was opened, and the Torahs were dressed in white. These years, as the High Holiday season approaches, I am often asked what is my favorite part of the holidays. At first, my thoughts are that I do not have a favorite part, I find enrichment in the season. Yet, if I really think about it, I would have to say Selichot is one of the highlights of the holidays for me. At first you might think the very beginning? What does that say about one of your Rabbis? In all honesty, though, the service of Selichot ways makes me feel the holidays. It evokes childhood memories. I can feel the Jewish calendar in motion. The High Holydays are no longer approaching. They are here. Selichot is the service in which we begin the formal process of forgiveness. It is the time to reminisce over the past year and to begin to take account of oneself. We ask ourselves various questions, "Did I act as I should have?" "Did I wrong another either intentionally or unknowingly?" "Was I the best me that I could have been?" Most of us can already answer these questions and hopefully be honest with ourselves. Selichot is also the service in which we begin to once again hear those High Holyday melodies. How many of us remember being a child in a temple and listening in awe to the Cantor or Cantorial Soloist sing those beautiful and yet haunting melodies, or, as an adult, knowing that once a year the music sounds just a little different? It is the music that sets the tone for the season. The music reminds us of the grandeur and the connection with Jews all over the world and through the generations who have heard the same prayers sung for so many years. It touches us. It surrounds us. It reminds us that the time of teshuvah, return, is upon us. The service ends with a blast of the shofar. It grabs us in the kishkees. Once again, we realize that the High Holyday season is no longer something in the distant future It is now. I wish for everyone a healthy New Year. May this be the year in which our world learns the true meaning of peace. May we once again join together in prayer and in song. And, may we all have a Happy New Year! The cost for this plaque is $400 per name. There will be a dedication service on October 3 in honor of all the new names added to the Yahrzeit Menorah led by Rabbi Akselrad. Here it is the beginning of September and we all begin thinking about back to school, the end of vacations, and of course the High Holy Days. When I think of the holidays, I think of family. Growing up we always had the holidays at our home. I am part of a big family with four siblings, which meant a lot of people at our home. It was a chance to see aunts and uncles and cousins that I only saw a couple of times a year. When we moved to Las Vegas we did not have any family here. However this was now our home. We joined the temple and we soon had family again. That's right!!! Everyone made us feel so welcome. We felt like we had been part of this congregation forever. Over the years, my wife Sandy and I began having people to our home for the holidays. Pretty soon when the holidays came around our home was a buzz... just like when I grew up. And that is just the way I like it!!! I have time to ref ect on the year that is past as well as the year that is beginning. Time to catch up with "MY FAMILY." Although the holidays are the biggest event in September a lot of other activity begins at temple. I've had two months of relative quiet to get my feet wet. And now I am swimming as fast as I can. On Sunday, the 7th, religious school starts. It is an event when all of our children and grandchildren come to the synagogue to begin or continue their Jewish education. They build a community and therefore, an extended family. At the same time the Men's club and Sisterhood's programs begin. The choir is meeting regularly and all sorts of other educational and social programs are in progress. My reason for mentioning all of this is so each of you can think about where and how you might become involved or more involved in temple life. This is an extension of each of our families. What better way to celebrate the New Year than to plan and do things with your family? Pick a committee to help such as outreach, social action, membership, or youth. Join the Men's club, Sisterhood or take an adult education class from one of our Rabbis. One thing I can say is that being involved means never being bored. A major plus is spending plenty of time with your family. To each of you my Las Vegas FAMILY, L' Shanah Tovah Scott Stolberg A Special Place To Belong Shalom, JUST A Wow, it's hard to believe that September is here. That means two things. High Holidays and the Shabbatones return. Besides the hustle and bustle of a busy summer, getting the kids ready for school (and yourself), plus getting all those projects done around the house, our thoughts begin to turn to the High Holidays. This month I thought I would talk a little about the music for our High Holiday Services, it?s roots and what goes into preparing for these Holy Days. You hear the finished product at Services, but here is some background about the music. Nusach is a term for a particular musical mode or melody. Each and every service in Judaism has it?s own particular musical theme or nusach ie: Weekday Services, Shabbat Evening, Shabbat Morning, festival and High Holidays. Which means that most every prayer chanted during each of these services has a different melody depending on the holiday. However, the only time you would probably hear an entire service chanted with nusach would be at an Orthodox Synagogue. Even so, I believe a Cantor from any movement should know the nusach for each and every prayer and holiday to truly understand the roots of our musical heritage. CONVERSION CLASS Are you interested in learning more about Judaism? Do you have a friend, spouse, partner, or relative who keeps asking you questions about Judaism? Do you know someone who wants to become Jewish? Then this class is for you and them! Join our Conversion Class if you are interested in becoming Jewish or would just like to know more about Judaism. This class is for everyone! m I will try to bring a variety of different styles of music to our Congregation. You will hear some nusach, some of the melodies the Rabbi or I grew up with, and also some of the more contemporary compositions at most of our services. This year you will hear a traditional high holiday melody for the Chatzi Kaddish. You will probably recognize this melody as several other prayers are chanted very similarly due to the nusach of the High Holidays. Our Adult Choir has been working since July to prepare for the High Holiday Services and I hope you will take the time to let them know that they are appreciated. I also welcome any feedback on the musical choices I have made and hope that you enjoy and are moved by this music. The Shabbatones return September 12. The band members: Ira Spector, Glori Rosenberger, Alan Molasky, Jay Poster, Brad Torchin, Mike Adler and Ed Birch will all return, plus a few new suprises. The power of music can teach, renew, revitalize and move us all. As we approach the New Year and Yom Kippur, we need help in attaining change in ourselves. I hope that we can help facilitate personal growth and continue to attract so many people to our vision in the months to come. Please tell your friends and family to come and worship with us. Call the temple office and sign up for Adult Hebrew. Thursday nights beginning October 16, 2003. f W Congregation Ner Tamid September 2003 Executive Director's Message WHY JOIN A TEMPLE? I've been your Executive Director here at CNT for a year and a half now, and as I did a year ago at this time of year, I'm thinking of why so many people join a temple, especially just before the High Holidays. When i first arrived, Rabbi Akselrad sat down with me, and shared some insights into some parts of temple life that are different from all other businesses, and especially, this time of year for temples. I was told that, during the 2 months prior to High Holidays, we wilt add 75-80% of our new members of the year's total. Why do people join a temple just before the Holidays, or, to be more direct, why do people join a temple at ail? I've come up with a few answers to those questions.These are not the only answers, but these are the ones I've come up with so far. Please help me add to the list: 1 - To be connected to a temple, to a Rabbi, to have access to Rabbis and Cantors during various life cycle events that are so important to us, making those days special and standout versus our "everyday lives . 2- To raise their children with Jewish traditions and customs, whether they had that upbringing or not (we have many jews by choice who have chosen a Jewish life for themselves and for their children], 3- To support a Jewish wav of life, and to offer those who choose, a place to worship and belong. 4- To directly or indirectly support the Jewish State of Israel, especially in times of need such as these times have been as of late. 5- To experience fulfillment, by belonging, by praying, and sometimes, simply just by being, with those around you who believe in the i same Jewish values, customs and traditions. 6- To feel a sense of belonging, with an inner peace that comes from being part of a much bigger, older-than-time concept - going back to our ancestors, and ail the generations before us, and after us. 7- To experience the feeling of knowing it's "The Right Thing to Do" - to help ourselves, our families, our neighbors, our community, our nation, and the State of Israel. 8- And lastly, to feel the fulfillment of Tikun Plum, the healing the world. We, as Jews, have taken the burden of making this earth a better place to be, and have done so with vigor, and with a sense of purpose. For those of you who have other reasons of why you've joined, I invite you to share them with me, so that I can share those excellent reasons with others who ask "Why join a temple?" By the way, in answer to why so many people join a temple just before the High Hofidays, it's the same reason that the Rabbis all ask their congregations on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year, for additional funding - because that's when the people are all at temple. People want a temple, their temple, to go to, to acknowledge their own life cycle, their own mortality, those who have come before us, and those who will be here after we've departed, and they want to do it with the Rabbis who they have known, and seen, all year long, for as many years as they've been coming. So, that leads me to the last reasons people join a temple - Consistency a Continuity - with so many things changing in the world today, people want something that they can hold onto, and belonging to a temple gives people that satisfaction, that fulfillness, that completeness, that they seek. Come to our temple, and see just what makes CNT "A Special Place To ^Belong". All of our young students are excitedly learning about the High Holy Days, and all of the beautiful traditions that are part of this special time of the year. The boys and girls are learning the blessings over ?Apples Dipped in Honey? and enjoying the opportunity to blow the Shofar( Ram?s Horn). We are busy making Shanah Tova Cards for our parents family and friends . It is delightful to hear these little ones wish each other a hearty L?Shanah Tova Tikatevu (Happy New Year Greeting). Our students will have the opportunity of tasting the delicious round Challah with raisins. As we say we are sorry for the things we have done, that are not so nice, this last year, we will promise to be kinder to each other and to our parents for this new year of 5764. Our classes will even get to take a TASLICK WALK TO CAST OUR SINS AWAY. It is an interesting experience to hear these 2-5 year olds express their feelings of hope and renewal at the most holy time of the year. Next month we will all have the opportunity to decorate the Sukkah and perform the Mitzvot of sitting and eating in our own beautiful Sukkah hut. We will celebrate the happy holiday of Simchat Torah and make our own flags and Torahs and have a parade to celebrate this joyful time of the year. Our Preschool classes are almost completely filled we have only two spots remaining. Our Kindergarten is almost full as well. Israel and the Holocaust are two topics important to Jewish life. This month we will underwrite the temple visit by Jonathan Adelman who is serving as a scholar in residence. Dr. Adelman will discuss our concerns about Israel and the events in the Middle East when he discusses ?Israel Among the Nations? Friday, September 19^. The story of the Jews of Denmark is an inspirational Holocaust event. While other countries in Europe were surrendering their Jewish citizens the Danes stood up to Hitler and assisted in their successful escape. The Danish Government has marked this event with an exhibit that had a successful debut in the Capitol in Washington DC and will now visit a few cities across the country. Men?s Club will oring it to Las Vegas and display it in the Congregation library for a month. We will kick off the exhibit with a special premiere Saturday, October 18th beginning at 6 PM. Mark your calendars, this is a no cost event you will not want to miss. The next morning, Sunday October 19th we will feature a survivor of the Danish Holocaust at our monthly breakfast. Harold Biltzer will give us a view of his experiences. Jackie Fleekop, our religious school director knows Mr. Biltzer and assures me you will be moved by his story. Shifting our attention to having some fun we will party at our Membership Dinner, Sunday, November 23,5 PM in the Social Hall. We have a special surprise planned for the entertainment that will blow you away. This year we will also be bringing back our most successful events. Our annual Golf Tournament, Chaired by Geoffrey Schafler, will be Sunday, April 4lh at 7 AM. Fred Toffel and David Nathan will chair ?L?Chiam? our health fair, Sunday, February 1st.. Breakfasts will be held on the third Sunday of the month. Don Marcus has already scheduled some dynamite speakers. Typical programs include Sharna Blumenfeld in January giving you tips on ?The Do s and Don?ts of Travel?, The Garden Guy, March 21" and Rabbi Akselrad, May 16th. Add a free bagels and lox breakfast and you know why Sunday morning meetings are a perennial favorite. The events I mentioned are only the beginning. Joel Charon is compiling the results of our membership survey and they will serve as a basis for further planning. You can help make this year a success by joining Men?s Club. Your dues are the foundation that makes our efforts possible. You can also add your ideas at our board meetings that are always open to our membership. It is the way we grow and change. Something happens in our life that helps direct us to make changes and discussions. As we approach the Holydays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur we check the paths we have taken to see how we can improve our lives and the lives of those around us. During the past few months curriculum as well as teachers job descriptions have been re-examined. We hope to offer your children a more positive journey in Jewish Education. Our office staff has assisted me above and beyond their job descriptions. Our Rabbis are becoming more and more involved in interaction with our students. The CNT Board is supporting ways to help us offer special programs that will impact your child?s Jewish Journey. When I came to Ner Tamid 10 years ago, I promised to help you make your child into a great Jewish person.
