The stores are now decorated for yet an?other holiday. This time it is Valen?tine?s Day. We all know that Valentine?s Day is NOT a Jewish holiday since it is named after St. Valentine, but it does have a very Jewish theme to it. Surprised that a Rabbi would say that? Well, if we examine Jewish tradition, love has always been a value praised. If we take a look at the Biblical book of the Song of Songs, we see at its core is the theme of love. And, whether it is the love of human beings to one an?other or the love of God for humanity, it is still love. Now, some scholars have disagreed about its placement in the Scriptures since at times it gets very hot and heavy, but it is there for a reason. The Song of Songs teaches us that love is the ideal that we should strive for in a rela?tionship. And, there are various types of love that we can attain. There is the love of a parent for a child, the love of a friend for another friend, and the love of spouses. Each kind of love is of different significance, yet, each type of love is very profound. It is this love that makes the world bearable and helps us to make connections with an?other human being. So, whether you say I love you to someone on February 14,h or another day, say it. Say it out loud. Tell someone how you feel. Happy ?I Love You? Day! !Ra56i Jennifer ?Weiner With pride and Cove, we invite you our Congregationah famiCy to share in our joy as our son Samnef is cafhd to the Torah to heeome a ?Bar Mitzvah on March 7th, 2003 at 7:30 p.m. ?y'our presence wiffmafe our evening complete. There's a TV commercial running right now that reminds me of an article I encountered a while ago in an ar?chaeology journal. The commercial is the one in which people are mis?taken for the ?owners" of a major company, though we find out eventu?ally that they are co-owners with thou?sands of other people who also have a small amount of stock in the com?pany. How many of us have been in Rome, seen the ruins of the Colosseum, and reconstructed in our imaginations the most imposing and glorious edifice of its time. Construction of the Col?osseum was begun sometime around 75 CE (give or take a few years) by Emperor Vespasian and completed by his sons, first Titus and then Domi- tian, about ten years later. It was embellished here and there by suc?ceeding emperors over the next hun?dred years, but Vepasian, who ruled from 69 to 79, is usually thought of as the architect of this magnif icent gift to the Roman people. One thing, however, has puzzled historians for a long time: the Colosseum was a very expensive project and when Vespa?sian took the reins of the Roman Em?pire, as a result of his extravagant predecessoi?Emperor Nero?the im?perial coffers were quite dry. But look carefully at the dates. Recall that it was in 70 CE that the Romans effectively put an end to the Jewish Revolt (though Masada was to hold out for three more years) and punc?tuated that victory by destroying and ransacking the Jews' temple in Jerus?alem. Vespasian and Titus were the two generals who, successively, were in charge of taking care of this little problem in the Roman province of Judea. From many sources, we know that the Temple contained fabulous trea?sures: many articles of gold, large quantities of silver coins, and pre?cious jewels and cloths. Even the Talmud says that ?he who has not seen the Temple of Herod has not seen a beautiful building." Jose?phus, the Roman-Jewish historian, described the Temple as ?being cov?ered on all sides with massive plates of gold...." One of the Dead Sea scrolls lists the Temple treasury as containing literally tons of gold and silver objects and coins. These trea?sures were accumulated from gifts by rulers and nobles in the Levant and by?pay attention?the half?shekel that was, according to Exo?dus, required to be paid annually for the Temple's upkeep by every family in Judea, i.e., dues! There is no question but that the Roman gen?erals took back to Rome a fortune that had been looted from the Tem?ple itself and from the wealthy fam?ilies of Jerusalem. In fact, if you've been to Rome to see the Colosseum, you've probably also seen Titus' arch nearby, the one on which, to com?memorate the empire's great victory in Judea, there are bas reliefs of soldiers and prisoners carrying the loot, including the temple's giant menorah, back to Rome. To this day, as one enters the Col?osseum one can see a huge stone block that had been part of one of the building's entrances. The stone has a 5th Century CE inscription in Latin that credits a particular per?son with having refurbished the Col?osseum. However, about fifteen years ago, a closer inspection of that stone showed that that 5th Century continued on page 12 A Special February 2003 Place To Belong CNT's Second Friday Musical Shabbat Services February 14,2003 at 7:30pm Don't miss the Shabba-Tones inaction! There are so many things happening at CNT that we are defi?nitely going to need President?s weekend off. We have P:holar in Residence, NFTY National Convention, Fam?ily Education grade level programs, Biennial and much more. We are preparing March Mitzvah Day as well as the Family Service for Purim and the Purim Carnival. Please feel free to ask about events. I?m always avail?able to talk to you. Our bulletin is a means of communi?cation to you. Our E-mail is another source, but it is important that you avail yourself to all that may interest you. We are a community, not just a building and we should share activities together. Read our Bulletin, the Calendar, the school calendar, your E-Mail carefully and then read it again. Many times people will come up and ask when is this or that happening. Sometimes I see a look of disappoint?ment on their faces when they find out they missed an event. Have a great month. Shalom, Jaclfe Torah 2 U We live in an age of convenience. We e-mail and we use the Internet for almost everything. It sometimes makes us feel as if the personal touch is missing. Torah 2 U is a program for adults that comes to you. Several friends get together to Study Torah in someone?s house. The portion is discussed in an informal manner. Then the evening seems to take off on a magical journey of its own with everyone sharing their opinions and learning with each other. We conclude with some desserts and beverages. Please put the All Women?s Seder set for April 22 on your calendar now and plan to join us for a wonderful evening. March 1st Sisterhood along with the Men?s Club and CNT is sponsoring an evening with the Celebrity City Chorus. You won?t want to miss both events. It has now been a year since we started our monthly Rosh Chodesh programs and it has been a wonderful year. Our next programs are February 2nd and March 3rd. I encourage you to try to attend one or both of these if you haven?t ever been to one of the programs. They are small gatherings of women who gome together to celebrate the new Torah portion, Phich coincides with the new moon. In the past year, I have learned more about myself, the role of women in the Torah and our traditions from these services, than any other part of my religious training except my adult Bat Mitzvah. It has been a great opportunity to get to know the women who attend on a more intimate basis than just polite chit-chat. Rosh Chodesh is open to all women, whether you are a Sisterhood or Temple member or not. So please come and bring a friend. The CNT tapestry project, which is being coordinated by Sisterhood for the benefit of the entire CNT community, involves those who are interested in increasing awareness of the healing energy within and around us, is going strong. We still need participants and I encourage all of you to get involved. It is simple, pick up a packet of fabric from the CNT office. On the fabric, each person can convey, in whatever medium they like, positive thoughts, images, and/or symbols of healing, love, peace, well-being, etc. Every square will then be connected to all of the other ones. This will be an ongoing labor of love and will be used periodically to embrace us during prayers for healing in services at CNT. Through artistic expression, our ideas, hopes and prayers of healing will be woven together as a community. For more information, please contact Fern Percheski 566-0078 (evenings). I to thank all of the team members on this project, Fern, Rita Malkin, Fynette Solomon, Sherri Speaker and Nancy Silber for their hard work and dedication to this project. The Sisterhood cookbook was a hit during the holiday season and is just the perfect gift for a friend or loved one. They are available at the Sisterhood Gift Shop along with other special items that are just right for any occasion. Phyllis Fewis and Phyllis Mark do an outstanding job buying for the gift shop and making it a very special place to shop. Check our website for the most up to date information on Sisterhood programs at www.cntsisterhood.com Please feel free to call me at 768-8529, or email me at ruth ?ruth-urban- group.com if you have any questions about Sisterhood. Call David Shapin for more information 210-9954 (cell) g Congregation N e r Tam id t In light of all the questions that have been asked of me recently regarding the New Campus Campaign, I want to take this opportunity to bring you up to date on the status of the campaign. We were all disappointed that the site located last summer did not meet our needs. The committee is actively evaluating possible land sites. We continue to focus on our two primary goals, good access for our congregation, and location in a residential community. We hope to have something to announce in the very near future. Even though this process is taking longer than we expected it is important that we find the right site to serve our congregation in the future. At the same time we are moving forward on meeting our financial goals. We now have pledges and cash totaling $3,000,000. We intend to continue work toward these goals. As we begin a New Year the committee wants to thank you for your support (and patience). We all appreciate the enormity of this undertaking and the amount of worjA that still lies ahead. I will continue to report to you periodically as we make progress. If you have any questions or comments please call Irv in the temple office and he will get them to the correct person. Scott Stofoerg Campaign Chaiiperson ANNUAL GIFT WRAP A BIG SUCCESS The annual gift-wrap fundraiser was a huge success. Thanks to the support of the Galleria mall we had a great location. We had several co-chairs that stepped up to make sure that the booth was staffed every day. Many thanks go to Cookie Olshein, Sandy Stolberg, Stewart Blumenfeld, Stacey Yahraus, Howard & Nancy Layfer, and Beth Bromberg. In addition there are dozens of volunteer wrappers too numerous to mention but thank you each and every one of you. The letters are gone, but a study of the pattern of holes in which the pegs had fit (a recognized technique for deciphering old inscriptions when the met?al letters have disappeared) shows the original statement on that lintel: "The Emperor Titus Caesar Vespasian Au?gustus ordered the new amphitheater to be made from the proceeds of the sale of the booty." Now, Vespasian had been in charge of some wars earlier in Germany and Britain, but there is no record that these yielded any great pickings. However, as Josephus writes in describing the triumphal procession in Rome following the return of the army from its conquest of Judea, "The spoils in general were borne in promiscuous heaps; but conspicuous above all stood out those captured in the temple in Jerusalem." Historians now believe that the only place the money for the Colosseum could have come is from the spoils taken from the Temple in Jerusalem.
