Hester has been delight- _____ ^^ ing our congregation for years, and *| typically has shared her skills at w... "family services." On this Friday night Hester will share stories that are a bit more mature. These stories were written by the reknown Jewish story-teller Sholom Aleichem. Aleichem's stories are known for their wit and old world wisdom. His most famous character "Tevye the Milkman" was the inspiration for the play "Fiddler on the Roof". You won't want to miss this special service May 17th at 7:30 p.m..?Rabbi's /Kcssa^e The months of May-June are typically a very busy one for the Temple. We mark the end of religious school, celebrate Confirmation, as well as celebrate our Adult B'nai Mitzvah class. However, these months will also reflect some changes in our Temple, both in terms of our lay and our professional leadership. Over the coming weeks a nominating committee will meet to select our next Temple President and additional board members. Jerry Gordon has served our Congregation with amazing dedication, patience and wisdom for nearly three years. His tenure has been marked by the building of our Sanctuary and Temple additions. Bu t beyond a physical statement, Jerry brought a wonderful sense of "we can do it" to our Temple. A belief, that together we can and would accomplish whatever we set our minds to. I am confident that our new board and our membership will keep that notion in mind as we plan for the year ahead. Our Temple has quickly become a leader in the community. We are now the largest Congregation not only in Las Vegas, but in the state. Our board members serve many distinguished and important offices in the U.A.H.C. and the National Brotherhood movement. We were selected as a host site for the "Taste of Judaism" program, competing with over 80 other congrega?tions. The response was so overwhelming that we had enough students to fill 3 classes! Our Temple continues to be a center in the community with the commitment of the Jewish Federation to use our Temple as the interim site for the new Jewish Day School. Even as I write this column the school has already registered more than 50% of its projected goal! But programs and good ideas don't just "happen". People make them happen. Even as we have been blessed with talented lay leadership and a supportive Congregation and Community, we have also had wonderful support staff. By the time you read this column our Service, in honor of Irene Gold, will have passed. But I want to take this opportunity to express my undying gratitude and appreciation to Irene for her many, many years of service to our Congregation. Irene started about 4 months after I came to the Congregation and has been instrumental in projecting a sense of office stability and warmth to our membership. We wish Irene well on her retirement, but know that it is a richly deserved transition in her life. May each of us find within ourselves the same dedication as Jerry, Irene, and our Board members who have served us so well. May their love of our Temple be a wonderful reminder of the very best that our Congregation has to offer. ^Cot Skabbat Mark your calendars now for the next Tot Shabbat. This is a special Shabt^ evening program designed for childrf 2-6 years of age and their brothers and sisters. Rabbi Akselrad conducts a ser?vice, especially abbreviated, for younger children. Following services, the children will participate in an excit?ing arts and crafts project, followed by a snack. Special thanks to Chairperson Harper Klamian and her Committee for doing such an outstanding job! Akselrad Rabbi ^btesident's /Kessa$e One of the responsibilities (or burdens) that comes with being involved in the leadership of Congregation Ner Tamid or any organization is not only attending scores of meetings but also attending regional and national conferences, work?shops and biennials and reading countless publications all of which provide advice as to how to maintain and expand membership. A temple has a more difficult task in this regard since it is a house of worship. Each individual congregant has a separate and slightly different attachment to the synagogue and, hopefully, considers the synagogue his or her individual 'home' of worship. How a temple and its leadership and staff responds to the needs of its individual members has a great impact on whether the congregation as a whole flourishes. One of the most elemental and essential aspects of a temple meeting the needs and expectations of its congregants is the response of its staff to individual... Along with family and friends, youre all invited to share in this special occasion. zftom the jAdmlhLsttatoi After my first year as the Adminis?trator, I asked the Rabbi when were the slow times around the Temple. He pointed out that there indeed were slow periods, the winter break in December and usually the week that falls around the 4th of July. That was it. Well, he was right and my guess is that even those two periods will disappear soon. We ha ve been very active this last year, busier than I can recall. With the completion of our new facili tiy i t seems like we have stayed open 7 days a week almost 24 hours a day. New members have been joining, new programs have kept the staff busy and the good news is, it doesn't look like it is going to slow down in the near future. Even with all the increased activity, your office staff remains available to help. (coni, on page 6)$ust ^4 Alote jf?tom Out (2,Antotla.l Soloist By the time you are reading this article I hope to have given birth to a healthy child and have begun my maternity leave and new position in life as a mother! I have been looking forward to this miracle for many years and am extremely excited! There are many people who will be helping out while I'm gone, including: Frances Klamian, who will be singing at Services; Eileen Kollins, who will be working with our B'nai Mitzvah students; Glori Rosenberger and Danny Gross, who will continue the music program during Religious School and Rhonda Greeson, our accompanist, who will lead the Adult choir rehearsals. I am very fortunate to have all of your help and would like to thank you in advance. I would also like to thank everyone who was able to attend the most incredible baby shower I've ever seen and all of my Junior Choir students for their lovely Noah's Ark music box and book collection. It's very hard for me to focus on anything except having this baby right now, so that's all I have to say this month. I plan to return to work later in the summer and look forward to seeing you all then! B'shalom, Bella ^OoJjiUn jbtesldent's /Kessuft (cont.) inquiries, requests and complaints. This has been espe?cially challenging for our congregation given the turn* caused by both our construction project and our bu^ geoning membership. Congregation Ner Tamid has always considered its membership a family, but this attitude has been seriously challenged. One of the primary means that the congregation has been successful in meeting the needs of its congregants on a day-to-day basis has been Irene Gold, in modern parlance, our 'gatekeeper7. Irene personifies the very essence of the congregation; a warm, caring attitude toward each individual congregant and a desire to treat each individual congregant's concerns on an individual basis. On a personal level, Irene's counsel has been invaluable over the years and has allowed me to avoid many mistakes and misuses. Simply, Irene has made life easier for all of us. For the past several years, Irene has on a more frequent basis mentioned thedreaded word 'retirement'. Well,as you now know, the threat has become reality and Irene has in fact retired. I only hope the first time Irene or Rudy contact the office with a question or concern (not a complaint), the staff is able to respond at the 'Irene standard'. /Kazd ^Cov Out /Kay ^'nal /Hltzvah Students Katherine Meoz Lauren Ober Adam Blitstein May 11th May 18th May 31st Shalom! What is in store for the last month of school? This past school year we raised the level of our Hebrew skill and improved our at?tendance. With the help of our Vice Presi?dent of Education Philip Goldstein and a group of committed parents, we were able to not only celebrate a Tu B?Shevat Seder, Purim Carnival, and a Passover Seder but we were able to address important school issues. We have changed our midweek day from Thursday to Tuesday and eliminated snacks in order to shorten the school time. We will have almost the same study time and students will be home for dinner. Most of our teachers have been with us for several years which has been an enormous help in maintaining our standards. May 5th we will celebrate ?The Ner Tamid Celebration of Israel.? All are invited at 11:00 am to share the experience with our students. There will be music, dancing, food, and displays. OurT.G.I.S. recognition day will also be on May 5th as outstanding Shabbat participants enjoy a day offun. May 19th is our last day and we will have a very special program beginning at 10:30 A.M. To our students - Thank you for a wonderful year. Remember summer means a break from attending classes not from study. If you do not look at your books all summer you will be behind in the fall. Please look over your work. To our staff, parents, parent advisory board, and Vice President Philip Goldstein, thank you very much for your support. Thanks, Rona Mendelson Social fiction (Committee In its ongoing collection for Shade Tree, a shelter for battered women and children, the Social Action Com?mittee is collecting paperback books for adults and children, crayons, coloring books, new pantyhose, toi?letries, craft items, cosmetics and disposable diapers. At this time no clothing is being collected. There is a marked barrel in the library for donations. Please do not deposit donations in the Temple office. 'zJ'iont the jAdminlsttAtoi (cont. from page 3) When I arrived in Las Vegas al?most four years ago, I was attracte^^i to Congregation Ner Tamid by the friendly, warm and welcoming voice of Irene Gold. Irene has a special charm about her. She is truly the reason that a number of our members have joined and stayed with us. Many come to us because of the Rabbi, Bella and because of the great Religious School we have. But the new resident to Las Vegas who hasn't heard of our fabulous staff and programs, join or come back because of Irene. Irene retired last month. With her departure goes a valuable, trusted employee and most of all, a dear friend. Over the course of my time here, Irene has provided some very candid advice and has been a sound?ing board to myself and to the board. Irene...you will truly be missed. Please call, I want to set you up on our volunteer schedule. We have hired Phyllis Fried t^^ become our new receptionist. Phyllis and her husband Ron have been members for almost a year and we are looking forward to hav?ing them both as part of our family and the Temple office. I would like to thank Rebecca Herren for the great job she has been doing on our bulletin. As you know, she left our office and took the job at the Jewish Reporter as the editor there. We talked her into continuing to do our bulletin from home. She has had to stop doing our bulletin due to her workload at the Jewish Reporter. Thanks Rebecca. Terri Herman is now do?ing our Temple bulletin. Terri has been a member for a number of years and has also previously done our bulletin. We welcome her and are excited to have her back on ouj* team. Page 6 Congregation Ner Tamid ?.-tnall /list As you can see, the e-mail list is t growing, andgrowing, andgrowing r The internet has turned out to be a great way to stay in touch with fellow Congregants.
