Following the story by Hester, Rabbi Akselrad along with Bella Feldman and our High Holiday Choir will conduct a most moving Selichot Service. Selichot, a Hebrew word mean?ing ?forgiveness,? refers to the spe?cial penitential prayers recited by Jews during the Rosh Hashanah season. Prayers requesting G-d to pardon our sins and end our suffering. The thousands of selichot were written mainly between the sev?enth and seventeenth centuries. SANCTUARY FUND GOAL 1.8 million HELP us MEET OUR GOAL!messagefrom Ooeing the parent of two small children I am often confronted with the persistent question, ?Why?? From my son, who is now five (!) I am often asked about the nature of the world as a physicality. ?Why are there clouds? Why are there cracks in the street? Why does it rain?? From my daughter who is now eight (!) the questions are becoming in?creasingly complex. ?Why do peo?ple cheat? Why did that man on TV kill his wife?? And of course, the ?Why do I have to do what you say all the time?? (!) In trying to answer their ques?tions, I find that I too look inward towards my own life experiences. I often think about some of the an?swers that I have learned about life from my parents. And it occurred to me that in asking questions and in trying to answer questions, I and my children are part of a link in the chain of human discovery and the collective memory of all people. This notion is especially mean?ingful for us as Jews as we observe the month of Elul which precedes continued on page 6 Scott & Brenna Have A New Sister Lynsey Brianne Yahraus Born June 14, 1994 weighing in at 7 lbs 10 ozs Congratulations to the proud parents Donald & Stacey from friends, family and staff at Con?gregation Ner Tamid! 2 51 S p e cia lC P / a ce C7o OSe/ong M. The social hall does not have sufficient capacity to meet the needs of our ever-expanding Congregational membership during the upcoming High Holiday services. In light of our Sanctuary Campaign, the good news is that this should be the last year that we face this problem. The bad news is that next year will not come soon enough. In the past, we have had enough capacity to allow for an allocation of tick?ets for non-members. This has included persons who provided tickets as well as UNLV students and members of other UAHC affiliated synagogues with whom we have a reciprocity agreement. During last Rosh Hashanah services, we exceeded our capacity for the first time. Even though only a very few per?sons were inconvenienced, this situation was intolerable. On short notice our so?lution was to construct an air conditioned tent on the patio area. While this was not the perfect solution, it was the best avail?able at the time. Upon the conclusion of last year?s High Holidays, we began addressing the capacity problem for this year. We ana?lyzed and investigated various possibili?ties, including split services. We have concluded that last year?s solution (with some refinements) is the most viable. Therefore, we will utilize a tent, but with the additional time for planning, we will continued on page 13 Junior G-Roix Orientation (j-oa. patents awl students wiPl (yodlow tR.e (yiJlSt dat) Ojy (Religious Sclood or Sunday, August 28td in tile. The next twelve months will be the most exciting in the history of our Temple. We have just approved the largest budget in our long ex?istence. In August, we will see the largest religious school class. Our High Holiday services will be big?ger than ever; arrive early for good seating. And shortly after that, we will begin our new Sanctuary. It is joing to be a great year! However, lis always our success begins and ends with each of us. So once again it is my task to remind you to keep your dues up to date. And of course please respond to the Kol Nidre Appeal. Finally, a word about the Sanc?tuary. During the next few months each Temple member will be con?tacted to make a five year commit?ment to the Sanctuary Fund. It would be wonderful if at next year?s annual meeting, our Presi?dent could report that we have one hundred percent participation. ? (Rabbi's message continued from page 2 the High Holidays. During this time we are commanded to begin a process of preparation for the New Year. This process is summed up in one word: Tshuvah, repentance. Traditionally, dur?ing this month the shofar is blown following morning services. The Con?gregation is stirred daily by the call of the shofar. This process of preparation is im?portant because it serves as a vivid re?minder that one cannot come to terms with the great or perhaps even small questions of life, instantly. And while small children may expect instant an?swers from their parents, we know that will change based upon their age of un?derstanding, so, too, does our own per?sonal search provide us with different answers depending upon our stage of life and the intensity of our introspec?tion. The Hebrew word ?Tshuvah" means not only repentance, it means "answer." Hebrew is magnificent in drawing linguistic connections to ideas that might otherwise be overlooked. As we spend the next few weeks in care?ful self questioning, it is my belief that we will find many of our answers through sincere repentance and self ex?amination. The call of the shofar awaits us, let us heed its call. ? Shalom, Eileen S. Kollins Golden LJl_J t"'< yy While our Jewish ancestors were busy worshipping the Golden Calf, Moses was very busy making trips up and down Mount Sinai. On his third trip, which oc?curred on the first day of Elul, Moses in?voked G-d?s mercy for our complete atonement. He remained on Mount Sinai 40 days, until Yom Kippur and G-d, took mercy and cleansed us, as though we had never sinned. On Elul 1, 1492, ships full of Jewish refugees from Spain, arrived in Naples and were given sanctuary and allowed to stay and to live in peace! During this time of Elul we are supposed to be busy study?ing Torah, praying and reflecting on our actions and attitudes of the previous year.
