DECEMBER 12TH jS AT 11:00 A.M. presented bv Congregation Ner Tamid Jt JUNIOR CHOIR TO BE HELD in the SOCIAL HALL It's a Melodrama of fun and song! ADMISSION IS FREE2 Congregation Ner Tamid A MESSAGE FROM OUR RABBI A FIGHT for Jewish survival ... against incredible odds. A minority vanquishing the majority by standing up for principles against politics. A STRUGGLE against assimilation. And an embracement of Jewish culture and religion. A VICTORY for religious freedom. . .for Jews. . .and for all people. These notions are what Chanukah is all about. And while Chanukah may be considered a "minor" holiday, its message is none the less extremely significant. Chanukah reminds all of us of the importance of keeping the eternal flame of our faith burning throughout each and every generation. Despite despots, despite anti-semitism, and often despite our own apathy. . there are always those who courageously recognize the value of Judaism. To make your observance of Chanukah especially meaningful this year, I offer two suggestions. The first suggestion is that while you are observing Chanukah, take time each night to talk about a different Jewish value or subject. Here are some suggestions: "Are the stories in the Bible really true?" "Why do I have to so to Hebrew School?" "Why don't Jewish people celebrate Christmas?" "Why do some people not like Jews?" "Why am / Jewish?" Ask your children their opinions on these and other Jewish subjects and you will find that some of their answers will be a wonderful Chanukah gift to you! And by the way, if you would like some help in answering these and other thought-provoking questions, 1 would highly recommend a new book entitled: When Your Jewish Child Asks Why by Kerry M. Olitzky, Steven M. Rosman and David Paul Kasakove. This book contains dozens of often asked questions by children and gives a wide range of thoughtful answers. My second suggestion to make your Chanukah celebration more meaningful is to recommend that you give your children a gift that they will remember FOREVER. . .a summer at a Jewish camp! Ask any of the dozens of Congregation Ner Tamid students who have been to Camp Pearlstein, Camp Swig, JCA Camp, Brandeis Bardin, etc., and you will find that they have had an experience that they will never forget. Although it has been a number of years since I was a camper (!), what 1 learned, and what I felt during camp is still a vital part of who I am Jewishly. In the weeks ahead the religious school will be sending home information as we receive it from a variety of Jewish camps. Remember, NOW is the time to start planning for the summer as popular camp sessions fill up quickly. BEGUN so long ago, Chanukah's message must be redeemed in every generation, and each and every year. Let this Chanukah be the most meaningful ever, filled with the joy of tradition and of family love. B'Shalom, Rabbi Sanford Akselrad Study Torah A class meets in Rabbi Akselrad's Study every other Tuesday at 12 noon to discuss how the Torah relates to life today! If you are interested in serving on our Board... Call Monty at 733-6292 A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT Over the last several months I have attempted to inform you of the various issues being considered by the Board of Trustees. Last month I wrote about the Sanctuary Campaign and what I perceive to be the need for a building fund as the means to spread the fiscal responsibility for the sanctuary among all Congregants, not simply those who have been solicited for major contributions. The Sanctuary Campaign requires a commitment from each and every one of us. In this regard, the Board of Trustees has begun discussing various options for a building fund. I would anticipate that a general meeting of the Congregation will be held shortly after the first of the year to gain your input. In the meantime, your thoughts will be greatly appreciated and of valuable assistance. Another issue being addressed by the Board is a restructuring of our dues to attract younger families, singles and seniors. We simply are not attracting these groups into our membership and must address this problem. I would anticipate a decision being reached...either at the December or January Board meetings. Finally, at the last Board meeting, an ad hoc committee was formed under the direction of our Ritual Vice President, Steve Weissman, to discuss and make recommendations concerning the involvement in religious activities of our non-Jewish Congregants. Rabbi Schindler, the President of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, at our recent biennial in San Francisco, raised this issue. The UAHC will be debating this over the next two years in anticipation of the 1996 biennial. If you are interested in joining Steve, Nadine Cracraft, Sue Joseph, Lois Doctors, and Rabbi Akselrad on this committee please contact the office. All of these topics are of great importance to the Congregation. Most importantly, we are attempting to arrive at decisions through challenging discourse. This is a very exciting time to be part of this Congregation and I hope that you will participate. Shalom! Jerry Gordon REVIEW...FORECAST FROM OUR ADMINISTRATOR As we begin December and prepare to start a new year, it is not only time to stop and reflect over the past, but to look forward and plan for the future. The past year for Congregation Ner Tamid has been marked with several key and significant events. We again had a wonderful Passover Seder at the Desert Inn. Attendance this year was significantly higher than past years, which indicates that not only is the Desert Inn doing a great job for us, but the companionship and sense of family has increased among our Congregation. The High Holidays provided several challenges with over 840 people at all the services. The fabulous turnout supports Jerry Gordon's announcement of the Sanctuary Campaign. The continued growth of our Congregation and the coming of age of our youth support the need for our new facilities. This year also introduced two new individuals to our staff -- Dotty Gross as the Preschool Director, and Jackie Fleekop as the Religious School Director. Both have taken proven programs and introduced a new vitality and direction needed for the expanded growth in each area. Of course, this year saw the best response ever to our Kol Nidre Appeal. This year's satisfaction and the commitment to our religion and to Congregation Ner Tamid. The contributions show your desire for the betterment of our existing programs, support of your staff coordinating these programs, and the need for their expansion. What about next year? Next year can only be better. As we move closer to the ground-breaking of our new facilities, we internally prepare for the associated growth and expansion of our family and also the competition in the scheduling of a variety of services. While things were bigger and better in 1993 than in previous years ? there were a number of areas that I would like to make better. I gladly solicit comments, suggestions and ideas of any nature to make this an even better year than last. While we are only human, we endeavor for greater heights and can only reach them with the help of our auxilaries and Congregants as a whole. Shalom! Monty4 Congregation Ner Tamid Cantor's Corner HOW CAN I HELP? It's hard to believe another year has almost passed and 1994 is right around the comer! This year has been very exciting and challenging for me, and I am most looking forward to celebrating Chanukah at Congregation Ner Tamid. On December 10th, we will have our annual Chanukah Family Dinner and Service. It is so nice to celebrate with our Congregational family and enjoy a traditional meal together before services. After dinner, we have not one, but THREE special treats. You will have the pleasure of hearing our Adult Choir, our Junior Choir, and our favorite storyteller, Hester Katzman. This is a service you won't want to miss! I must "kvell" a bit about our big "Chanukah Musical" coming up on Sunday, December 12th, at 11:00 A.M. Over the past few months I have watched our amazing 2nd through 5th graders transform into actresses and actors! Let me tell you, this has been an incredibly fun project! All of the students are adding their individuality to this play. I am teaching the children that it's not the performance that is most important, rather that they all possess special qualities and that this is an opportunity to express themselves and teach people about Chanukah in a very creative form. This project is also teaching the importance of teamwork. All of our Junior Choir cast members have put much time and effort into this play and I hope you will bring your family and friends to experience this delightful show. Wishing you all a happy and healthy New Year! Shalom, Bella WHAT IS A HAVURAH? A Havurah is a group of couples, families and individuals who will commit to meeting on a regular basis. It can be for a variety of reasons such as: __To enjoy a Shabbat dinner __To see a show __To go on a nature walk If you see a Havurah as a group of people who are really enjoying themselves, you're absolutely right. Number one, it's a terrific way to get to know people and get acquainted with other Congregants. For more information in getting involved and starting your own group of people, contact Rona and David Mendelson, who are Havurah Coordinators and they will start you off in the right direction. Their telephone number is 458-1536. .........................................IL. r ^ USHERS OF THE WEEK 1st WEEK OF THE MONTH Joe Schwartz 2nd WEEK OF THE MONTH Lennie Gropman & Burton Rosenberg 3rd WEEK OF THE MONTH Jack Nitzkin & Burton Rosenberg 4th WEEK OF THE MONTH Joe Fink & Max Blumenfeld IF THERE IS A 5th WEEK OF THE MONTH Joe Schwartz An often-asked question by Congregants and Friends of CONGREGATION NER TAMID is, "How can I best help the Temple? What are some areas where I can specifically support the Temple?" There are many, many needs. The following list describes some of the many funds that we have at the Temple. Contributions to these funds are acknowledged in our monthly bulletin. ADULT EDUCATION: This fund provides support for many educational programs throughout the year. Contributions to this fund will allow us to provide courses and speakers of Jewish content to our Congregants and the Community. ART & BEAUTIFICATION: This fund provides support for beautifying both the exterior and interior of our Temple. Contributions to this fund allows us to maintain our Temple grounds and to purchase art work, furniture, and other decorative items for the Temple. BUILDING MAINTENANCE FUND: Contributions to this fund go towards maintaining our facility. CANTOR'S DISCRETIONARY FUND: Contributions to this fund go to support and expand our music program. This fund will be used to purchase musical equipment and supplies and to help bring in professional musicians for special programs. CHOIR: Contributions to this fund provide support for our Choir. This fund will be used to purchase robes, music and other items to support the Choir. CllAI PLAQUE: These Plaques in the social hall commemorate the simchas in our lives. The purchase of this plaque is a contribution to the General Fund of our Congregation FLOWER FUND: Assists the Temple in purchasing flowers to adorn our pulpit for special events. GENERAL FUND: Provides for the overall maintaining of our Temple budget. Membership dues provide only a portion of what it takes to run our Temple. Generous support of this fund allows our Temple to grow and provide additional creative programs to our membership. KOL NIDRE APPEAL: Only 60% of our Temple budget comes from dues. The remainder must be made up of contributions to the Temple. The annual "Kol Nidre Appeal" typically publicized at High Holiday time is the major means by which our Temple is able to sustain itself. LIBRARY FUND: Our fledgling library is in need of something very important...BOOKS! This fund allows the Temple to purchase books on Jewish topics both fiction and non-fiction. Many in the Temple and especially the children in our religious school are regular visitors to our CONTINUED ON PACE 5Congregation Ner Tamid 5 CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4....HOW CAN I HELP library. Our need for a larger number and a greater variety of books is deeply felt. In addition to our Library Fund, we have established a CHILDREN?S Library Fund. M. B. DALITZ REGILIOUS SCHOOL FUND: This fund is used to bolster our Religious School. OUTREACH FUND: This special program began at our Temple in 1989. Outreach is a program designed to provide programming and support to inter-faith couples and their families. Outreach helps integrate such families into Congregational life by providing social and educational programs on a variety of Jewish topics. Over a hundred people have participated our first year in this vitally needed program. PRAYERBOOK FUND: Purchasing a prayer book for either the High Holidays or Shabbat is a lovely way to pay tribute to a loved one. PRESCHOOL FUND: Contributions to this fund go to support the preschool at our Temple. Monies are used for play equipment, educational toys, and many other supplies that will insure that our school is fun and exciting to our youngest children. RABBI'S DISCRETIONARY FUND; This fund allows our Rabbi to provide support for creative programs at the Temple that are not yet part of our yearly budget. In addition, this fund allows the Rabbi to help many in our Temple and in the community who are in need of temporary aid through a difficult time. TEMPLE AUXILIARIES: Each of our auxiliaries, Sisterhood, Brotherhood, and Golden Chai have their own special funds that allow them to support a variety of worthwhile endeavors. From Oneg Shabbats to Camperships, from our gift shop to youth activities and senior activities, our auxiliaries provide much needed support to these special programs. TEMPLE WISH LIST: Very often there are items needed for the Temple. These items can often be easily donated by Congregants who are remodeling their home or updating their office equipment. YOUTH ACTIVITIES FUND: This fund provides support to our youth programs and youth groups. Our Temple has four youth groups: NTTY?Ner Tamid Temple Youth for 9th through 12th grades; TNT?Teens of Ner Tamid for 6th through 8th grades; M i l Y?for grades 4 and 5; and TrTY-BITTY-NITTY" for 2nd through 5th grades. M. B. DALITZ RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Comments from our Director of Education There is music, great smells and good feelings in the air! Could it be December? Malls are decorated and everyone is rushing to shop and bake, and every charity is pushing for support. Yes! It is December. Here at Congregation Ner Tamid, there is also that wonderful December feeling. I am busy checking progress reports (to be sent home the week of December 5th. and returned the week of December 12th). In conjunction with Outreach, I will help conduct a workshop on December 5th at 10:30 a.m. My nerves are getting frazzled as I seek out help with the Purim Carnival which will be held at the end of February. Sisterhood is filling the air with great smells from our Temple kitchen as they prepare latkes for the Chanukah Family Dinner December 10th. at 6:30 p.m Our wonderful Junior Choir is practicing for the Chanukah Musical on December 12th, at 11:00 a.m. Don't miss it! You won't believe it! Broadway has moved to Congregation Ner Tamid! Golden Chai's "Adopt a Grandparent" program is a big part of our students bridging the generation gap. On November 21st, Golden Chai Grandparents brightened our classrooms as they shared their holiday memories. Our students made the centerpieces for the Golden Chai Chanukah Party, as part of our regular art program during Sunday Religious School. Excuse me if I kvell ? Students of the M. B. Dalitz School have been participating in "Project Caring" with great success. "Project Caring" permits our students to learn the true meaning of Tzedakah by reaching out to the community. We collected an enormous amount of food and paper goods during September, October and November. The 7th grade class filled and overflowed a bassinet in the foyer with articles and clothing for babies of abused women. The Student Council voted to give $500.00 of school Tzedakah to the Jewish Family Service Agencies. This amount was matched by the Temple. The joint donation of $1,000.00 was an example of the respect and support of the more mature members of our congregation and our youth. During December, each student will continue reaching out to the community. They each will collect eight items that are in good condition and are seldom or never used to be given to children in need during Chanukah. Now that it is December, you can feel the excitement of the students as Winter Break nears. They soon will be enjoying their mental health holiday by visiting with friends and family or just relaxing. We are sure that they will return on Tuesday, January 4th; Thursday, January 6th; and Sunday, January 10th, for Religious School and eager to get back to their studies. From the staff and I.....Happy Chanukah and Happy New Year! Jackie Fleekop Director of Education SCHOOL'S OUT DECEMBER 17TH IT WILL RESUME AGAIN ON JANUARY 3RD, 1994 A HAPPY WINTER BREAK" TO ALL!6 Consresation Ner Tamid CNT STUDENT COUNCIL & TEMPLE BOARD MATCH DONATION TO JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE AGENCIES FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: MRS. JACKIE FLEEKOP, DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION AT CONGREGATION NER TAMID; BILL FELDMAN, DIRECTOR OF JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE AGENCIES; GERALD GORDON, PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD AT CONGREGATION NER TAMID; AND OUR STUDENT COUNCIL PRESCHOOL NEWS The month of November has been very special for Congregation Ner Tamid preschoolers. We have been learning about Thanksgiving and the importance of sharing with others. The children and parents have been collecting canned goods and other food items for Jewish Family Services Thanksgiving food baskets. It was especially exciting to have Bill Feldman, Executive Director of JFSA, personally come to meet us and collect our food basket. This project helped us to learn the importance of helping others, and the meaning of the word "Mitzvah." In addition, we have been making various Thanksgiving art projects to help decorate our tables. The children have been practicing the proper way to set a table and have made a placemat to help them in case they forget. Our storytelling Grandma, Ronae Fink, came to visit this month. Ronae told us a very funny story and we look forward to her next visit. Now, we can't wait for the month of December so that we can begin the celebration of Chanukah. The preschool is still looking for members who would like to serve on an Early Childhood Committee. This committee will help to set goals for our Early Childhood program and participate in fund raisers and other special projects. Participation in this committee is a terrific way to meet others, become active in Temple life, and to help our children! Please call Dotty Gross at the Temple if you are interested. The children and staff would like to wish everyone a wonderful Chanukah!! Shalom! Dotty, Annette, and Leah Congregation Ner Tamid students are living their Judaism in a very positive manner. The student council voted to donate $500.00 of the school Tzedakah money to the Jewish Family Service Agencies. Students at the M. B. Dalitz Religious School of Congregation Ner Tamid are very proud to be supported in this decision by their Temple Board with their vote to match the five hundred dollar amount. This joint donation totaling $1,000.00 is a prime example of the respect between the youth and the mature members of Ner Tamid Congregation. Jewish Family Service Agencies offer counseling programs and help to many people within our community. Food drives and clothing collections are important, but the students and the Temple Board of Congregation Ner Tamid realize that monetary support is needed to help permit the Jewish Family Service Agencies to function in a professional manner. Dr. Stephen A. During installations, each board member was presented with a special (gag/fun) gift to help them with their new responsibilities. Many of our current TNT members may be new, but they are certainly enthusiastic. As soon as everyone had finished a light nosh of chicken wings and french fries, the board got right down to business. Thank you to Bella and the Rabbi for making the evening extra special. We would also like to thank all of the friends and family members of our TNT'ers for being there to support our group. November was also filled with thrills and chills on Sunday, November 21st, when we went ice skating at the Santa Fe Hotel. It was thrilling to see everyone glide and slide over the ice. Our chills were kept to a minimum with gallons of hot chocolate. December promises to be just as exciting. Please join us at our General_______Meeting Tuesday. NTTY has been unusually fun and successful this year. October started off with a remarkable attendance at SWFTY's Social Action Weekend in Scottsdale, Arizona. Lisa Platt, David Chenin, Andy Gratz, Jeremy Kohnen, Robb Worth, Mike Giordano, Billy Tiep and Judy Kollins represented NTTY and did projects including visiting an Old Folk's Home, a mental Hospital, a Salvation Army Shelter, and building a workshed at a children's hospice. Billy Tiep served as songleader and filled the weekend with singing and guitar music. We attended the Rabbi's discussion about intermarriage and inter?religious dating. It was interesting and informative. The following week, NTTY did a program on community awareness. We invited our parents and the evening was well attended and exciting. Our latest Social Action project was spent at Mt. Charleston. We spent the day picnicing, picking up trash, hiking and singing. Recently, NTTY did a unique social. We had a "car rally," which consisted of splitting into groups and heading out on a city-wide scavenger hunt. The twenty of us who traveled from lace to place in searching of clues had a super time! We all send a HUGE thank you to Karen Kugler for organizing one of NTTY's best socials ever! November's other activities included our presence at the Chanukah Bazaar. We were selling homemade picture frames and gift wraping. The evening of the twenty-first was a religious program organized by our religious chairperson Katie Feldman. NTTY missed a November meeting because of the Thanksgiving Holiday, however we will be sure to reconvene in December. December 9th through 12th is the weekend of Winter Conclave in Pheonix, SWIFTY's next event. NTTY will hopefully be well represented again for the next fun filled weekend! As you can see, almost every week is packed with activity for NTTYites. We have the highest membership we have had in years! However, we are always excited for new faces. COMMITTEES & AUXILIARIES Social Action Committee We are especially proud of our brand new program of gifts to the young people of our Congregation who are away from home at Chanukah. Each person whose name and address were given to us received a box with a Menorah supplied by the Brotherhood; candles donated by the Sisterhood; chocolate gelt from Golden Chai; a sheet of appropiate blessings, as well as a card from our committee. In addition, funds were donated by Mr. and Mrs. Mannie Stem of Cleveland that covered postage, a small gift, and future items to be purchased and sent at a later date. Thank you to all of the above who made this new project a great success. Rita Moses Malkin, our resident artist, has pursued our "House Pin" project. You may have already seen many of them worn by ladies in the Congregation. Proceeds from their sale will be going to a worthy women's shelter. WalMart was so immpressed by the project and the lovely quality of the glass pins that they ordered 2,000 of them. They (WalMart) will also make an extra donation to the shelter. December is when we will work with the Religious School under the direction of Principal Jackie Fleekop, to collect wrapped children's gifts (labeled by appropriate age and sex, please), as well as warm coats and sweaters, for children and adults. Several of our committee members will also work in distribution of food baskets so that our Christian co-workers on this project can have their holiday with their own families. For the future, we are planning a Health Forum to try to understand the Clinton Health Plan. Dr. Marv Glovinsky will work with the Rabbi to insure that an interesting panel will be involved. The projected date for this event is after Shabbat service on March 4th. If you have an interest in joining our committee, please call the Temple office and leave your name or contact me personally. Thanks once more to all Congregants who continue to support our
