" Now is the time that many people think about joining a Temple and our membership committee is asking for your help. Bring your friends and family to Services and have them meet our Rabbi and get to know our Congregation. This is also a special time for our new members to get acquainted. All are welcome to come by during the week to meet our Principal or other staff members. Most assuredly, let us invite friends and family, prospective members and new members, to come to our Prospective New Members Sabbath on August 20th at 6:45 p.m. (before Services) in the Temple Library. Representatives from our Temple Board, committee chairs (see Page 4) and staff members will be present to introduce themselves to people new to the Temple or interested in joining our Temple. There will be babysitting that night to help make it easier for families with young children to come. Over the past four years our Temple membership has nearly quadrupled. Our Temple is almost 450 families and growing strong! When asked, "Why do you belong to Congregation Ner Tamid?" the reasons are as varied as our membership-some people join because of our Rabbi, some because of our school, some because of our programs. Others join because they believe strongly in Reform Judaism and are committed to Jewish survival. And many people have all of the reasons in mind when they become a part of our special Congregation. What are your reasons? And would you mind sharing them with others? We have found over the years that more than ads or articles in the newspapers, our best membership recruiters are YOU, our Congregants. You have the unique ability to identify friends who are searching for a Temple and want to be a part of a warm and caring congregation. Well, after the outpouring of concern, friendship, and support that we have received over the past few days from fellow congregants, I can unequivocally attest to the fact that Congregation Ner Tamid is more than simply a place for Jewish worship. We are a congregational family in the true sense. Thank you. Werry Gordon A Word from Our Administrator Because the August bulletin deadline is July 10, 1993, approximately 3 weeks will have passed since I submitted this article. I am writing this while sitting in my daughter, Sara's, hospital room watching her recover from a sudden and unexplained blood clot in the vein descending from her left kidney. Whether the kidney will recover will not be known for several months. When asked to define the purpose of a congregation, we generally state that it is a group of people who join together for religious worship. However, it should be As the summer trudges on, we find ourselves rapidly approaching the High Holidays. I would like to take a moment of your time to address several areas related to the High Holidays, as scheduled below. This time of year brings with it a great deal of personal reflection and reflection on the Temple and its ability to help others. Kol Nidre "All the Vows," the introductory words of the opening prayer recited on the evening of the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur), contains a solemn declaration of the annulment of all personal vows made during the course of the year. This declaration does not, however, free individuals from obligations toward their fellow man. Traditionally, this is the time of year that we conduct our Kol Nidre Appeal. The contributions from you represent 18% of our annual budget. The timing of our appeal coincides with the High Holidays to capitalize on our commitment to ourselves and to others. While Kol Nidre indeed supplements our Temple budget, it allows us to help others in our congregation and the Jewish community. Our desire - to donate what is in your heart. Your donations also allow us to keep your dues low. Again this year for the High Holidays we will mail out High Holiday tickets to our members in good standing. If you do not receive your tickets by September 2nd, please call Irene at the Temple office. Temple policy requires members be in good standing to be issued High Holiday tickets. Good standing means that congregants are current on their dues. Bar Mitzvah of Daniel Scott Hibshman My name is Danny. I was bom in Suffem, New York, on September 14, 1980. In 1989, I moved to Coral Springs, Florida, with my parents and sister, Laura. I will be entering 7th grade at the University School of Nova University. I have participated in math, spelling, and geography academic competitions. I enjoy playing baseball in the challenger division of Little League, as well as basketball and other sports. I also enjoy computers and Nintendo. For Temple members who may be traveling during the High Holidays, there is a provision under the auspices of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and World Union for Progressive Judaism for worship in temple throughout the country and abroad. There are courtesy request forms available for this purpose. To obtain these request forms, call the Temple office. Rabbi's Message A brief bout with the flu and sore throat prevented me from attending our installation of officers at the end of June. And therefore I missed an opportunity to share some thoughts about our outgoing board, and in particular our outgoing President, Cal Lewis. So often staff and leaders in a congregation find themselves in the role of problem solvers, and builders of a dream, that they fail to look back upon what they have accomplished. I don't know what was said Sunday night in June, but the repeating of good news always bears repeating. I am very proud of the accomplishments of our outgoing Board. Under Cal's leadership, the front of our Temple was landscaped, our foyer was beautified, It is suggested that if any of our members will be expecting out- of-town visitors who wish to worship with us during the High Holidays, that they ask their guests to make arrangements with their respective temples for the courtesy request forms so that we will be able to accommodate them for the High Holidays this year. Bar Mitzvah of Mitchell Kallick Hi! I'm Mitchell Kallick and I'm going to have my Bar Mitzvah on August 21, 1993. Congregation Ner Tamid 7 ^ Rabbi's message, Continued from Page 3: our office furniture was upgraded, and our Preschool was established. In addition our membership grew by over 100 families. Moreover, it was under this Board, and through Cal's leadership that our Temple Staff has expanded and become profession?alized. The role of our religious school Principal has expanded as has that of our Temple Administrator. And of course, our music program has been wonderfully enhanced by the addition of our Cantorial Soloist, Bella Feldman, as a full time employee. Rome wasn't built in a day, nor a Temple overnight. It takes a lot of planning, a lot of money, and a lot of hard work. But it also takes DEDICATION. This one quality above all others I think will serve as a hallmark of Cal's leadership. Cal was always there when he was needed (even when it meant he missed a sporting event or two!) and was there to lend his support. I anticipate equally good things from our new Board under the able leadership of Gerald Gordon. Like Cal, Jerry was a part of the original Board that brought me to Las Vegas over five years ago. Indeed Jerry has served on our Temple Board for over eight years having chaired some of our most important committees. Jerry too brings a strong sense of commitment, and his own special vision for what will continue to make our Temple strong and vibrant. Towards that end Jerry has assembled an extremely strong Board to help guide our Temple over the next two years. Working together, and always with our Temple membership, I know that our Temple will continue to grow and remain "a special place to belong. ? One more thought. B'shalom, $ Rabbi Akselrad dantor'S Corner This summer I had a wonderful experience that I would like to share with you. I traveled to Oconomowoc, Wisconsin to attend a songleading workshop led by three very influential people in the Jewish music industry: Debbie Friedman, Cantor Jeffrey Klepper and Rabbi Dan Freelander. Many of the new pieces of music I have used throughout the year were written by these talented musicians. The workshop was held at the Olin Sang Ruby Institute, the first UAHC-affiliated camp in the United States, and one of the most gorgeous places I've ever been. I had no idea what to expect from this workshop and was very pleasantly surprised at how much I learned and experienced. It actually took me a few days after returning to realize what a spiritual renewal this was for me. To be among 50 other people from all over the country who have similar backgrounds and interests; to pray with them, eat meals together and sing at every given moment was truly a meaningful experience. I feel privileged to be a part of a congregational family that invests so much in my education. Thank you all for allowing me to share with you all that I leam and love so much. The High Holidays are approaching fast and I am pleased to tell you that our Adult Choir has doubled in membership over the last year. It is a very challenging experience to leam and perform all of the music for the High Holidays and I commend all of my dedicated choir members for taking on this project. Congregation Ner Tamid 11 ^ Sisterhood News This coming year promises to be both fun and interesting for Sisterhood members. We have many events and programs planned that should provide something for everyone. Among the highlights will be three major fundraisers: 1) a progressive dinner in October, 2) our annual Channukah Bazaar, and 3) a talent show and barbeque in April. Also we are planning a family fashion show in February and a December party. Programs for our general meetings will vary from entertainment to education. The meetings will also vary in time from noon to evening so that everyone can attend some of them. Hopefully we will see all of our members more than once during the year. Outreach On July 6, 1993, Sue Joseph, Nadine Cracraft, Co-chairpeople for Outreach, and Shawna Parker of Jewish Family Services, met with Rabbi Akselrad to discuss the focus of the Outreach Committee for the upcoming year. A new committee will be formed and new members are needed. Please call Sue at 656-9963, or Nadine at 254-2862, if you would like to help us. The first committee meeting will be in August. The Social Action Committee met in June to review the past year and to plan for the coming one. Several of our successful projects will be continued and we will initiate some new programs. We look to our supportive congregants to insure that our "mitzvah momentum" will build. During the High Holiday period, we will have our annual Food Drive. Last year almost 800 pounds for food were donated and we hope to do even better this year. Also appreciated are personal hygiene items: soap, shampoo, diapers, etc. These items will be donated to the Jewish Family Service and the Weekend Emergency Assistance Program, co?sponsored by the Lutheran and Methodist Social Ministries. If a cdngregant knows of another worthy organization that can use our assistance, please call with that information. During our Sukkot celebration at Ner Tamid, we will offer voter registration for those new to the community or those who have not yet voted in Clark County. Last year we signed up several new voters. Many books have been donated to the Temple. We will try to find a home Another wonderful plan in the offing is to work in conjunction with the Temple Social Action Committee on several projects. Eileen Kollins, who chairs the Temple committee, is also the Religious Activities Chairperson for Sisterhood. We are fortunate to be able to double the participation in some very worthwhile community causes. 1 want to express my appre?ciation to my talented and enthusiastic new Board for their input and for the energy they're putting into their jobs to get this year off to a rousing start. I know the entire Temple will benefit from their efforts. Love and shalom, $ Helen Zliser President Four events will be held during the 1993-94 fiscal year. The dates are tentatively scheduled for Sundays: October 10, December 5, February 13, and April 24. A variety of interfaith issues will be addressed at these events. The committee is looking forward to working with the Jewish community to identify interfaith issues. We welcome ideas and concerns from Temple members and hope you will call us to share your thoughts and feelings. ^Nadine Cracraft and Sue Joseph for them, such as the Boys and Girls Club, or to add them to the Clark County Library System for their fundraiser. Again, if you know of someone in need of books, please let us know. One of the new projects for this year will be sending a gift package to children of congregants between the ages of 18 and 22 who are living away form home. Each parcel will include a menorah, candles, chocolate gelt, and a few other "goodies." We will ask congregants with youngsters in that age category to let us know in writing by the end of October their child's name and address. This project will be co-sponsored by the Sisterhood. Brotherhood and Golden Chai are also considering participating in this new and worthwhile project to keep our children connected to their Judaism and our congregation. Once more, thank you again for supporting our projects throughout the year. We look forward to continuing our tradition of performing mitzvot. Shalom, <? Eileen Kollins Auxiliaries Golden Chai Meet Penelope Smythe-Shore In my late 20's, Heaven help me There were days, if I heard "Mommie " once more, I would gladly have changed my name, to that Glamorous Penelope Smythe-Shore! In my late 30's the phrase was "But Mother!!!" oh Brother!! The emotions, the tears: Through all the teen years, there were "Scream" years - "You 're Grounded!
