We begin at 11:00 in the greeh belt by the classrooms as we pardde in our costumes. Then, on to the Social Hall for alisorts of,merry-making and fun. One of the highest compliments that a person can give another person is to refer to him or her as a ?mensch?. A true human being. Being a mensch is something that we all hope our children will become. We hope that they will be kind, compassionate, caring, and charitable. These are qualities that children learn, not from speeches, but by example. Our Temple is filled with menschen. I meet them every day. They are the people who give of their time to volunteer. They are the people who call me to let me know about someone who is in need of help or sick in the hospital. They are people who go out of their way to give a ind work, and a compliment ?just because?. I am in need of a few more menschen. The recession has hit not only the United States in general, it has also affected Las Vegas in particular. Almost weekly I am receiving calls from members of the Jewish Community who are turning to me for help. Sometimes it is financial help. Sometimes it is help in finding work. Sometimes they are in need of medical attention and they can not afford a doctor because they have no insurance. The list goes on. I have often heard the comment that Las Vegas is a tough town to break into. We are transient. We are wary because people come here hopping to make a quick dollar. Sometimes these people who have been ?middle class?, people who have held jobs in the past are now without work. I hope that we have not become so jaded that we are turning down those truly in need. Throughout history Jews have taken pride in helping fellow Jews. Can our obligation be any less? You can help by being a mensch. Let me know if you would be willing to help me help others in certain circumstances. Whether it be an offer of financial help or help in finding a job or medical help. I will not call on you often, but when I call upon you, you can be sure it is because it is a mitzvah worth doing. You can also help by letting our own community agency Jewish Family Services know of your concern. If I receive a few phone calls a week, you can imagine what they are receiving. Give Bill Feldman a call and let him know that you care. Together we can make a difference. After all, that?s what being a mensch is all about. B?shalom. Sanford D. Akselrad Rabbi Congressman Bilbray speaks on U.S./Israeli Relations Friday, February 14th was a very special evening for Congregation Ner Tamid. The evening began with a Shabbat dinner for Ner Tamid?s own Cub Scout Pack 145. Over 50 parents and children enjoyed a delicious dinner and had lots of fun. Congressman James Bilbray, our special guest for the evening, spoke on the present state of U.S./lsraeli relations. Con?gressman Bilbray?s talk was educational and informative. With the present world situation in flux, his topic was more than timely, and very well attended. Following the service there was a beautiful oneg. This treat was co-spon?sored by our President, Cal Lewis and his wife, Phyllis, in honor of their 30th wed?ding anniversary and Cub Scout Pack 145. IN PARTY President's Message The year is flying by and there are so many good things happening at Congregation Ner Tamid. I?ll start with the Social Action Committee and it?s very capable chairperson, Eileen Kollins. We had a very successful food drive, and we should not forget the needy even though we are not formally collecting food now. The Social Action Committee brought Congressman James Bilbray to Congregation Ner Tamid. He is a fine person, and a good friend of Israel. It was good to hear what he had to say.. We are again collecting soap, shampoo and clothing for Shadetree Shelter. Therse women and children need and appreciate what we do. I want to express my thanks to the Social Action Committee for reminding us of tzedakah and bringing attention to our Congregation for the good it does. Brotherhood is also doing a wonderful mitzvah this month. The blood mobile wil be in the Temple parking lot during the Purim Carnival. Many have signed up to give - contact Joe Schwartz for more information. Be sure to support our school by coming to the Purim Carnival. The money raised maintains the quality of our school by providing the extras. Again - let me mention particpation in Temple activities. There are many to choose from, and all enrich your Temple experience. Sisterhood, Brother?hood, and Golden Chai all meet during the month. This month we also have the Purim Carnival and a game night. Be sure to fill out the Temple survey so that we may better serve your needs. Cal Bat Mitzvah Abbie Spoor My name is Abbie Spoor, and on March 14th, 1992 I will become a Bat Mitzvah. I am in the 7th grade at Cannon Junior High. I moved to Las Vegas from the San Fernando Valley in California in July of 1990, and really love it here. I love to dance, ride my bike, and hang out with my friends. Social Action Our Social Action Committee continues to meet and have a vari?ety of programs to benefit our Con?gregation, as well as our commu?nity. Nadine and Joe Cracraft and Maxine Molinsky hosted the Rus?sian family and brought them to Shabbat services to hear about the Rabbi?s trip to Russia. We will continue to socialize with the Schneiders and assist them in their adjustment to life in Las Vegas. During February our ?Back to the Basics? clothing and soap/ shampoo collection was very suc?cessful. Thank you to everyone who made contributions. This exercise program is designed for people of all ages who suffer from pulmonary disorders. The class will be offered at the Temple on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:00 am. - 11:00 a.m. You may join the class at any time, but class size is limited. You will need a referral form signed by your physician. The form may be obtained by calling the American Lung Association at 454-2500. The class will be taught by Aliza Pro. Aliza is presently a graduate student at UNLV in the Masters Program in Exer?cise Physiology. The chil?dren enjoyed their sack lunch at the Temple before the tour, and we topped it off after by stopping for ice cream cones at Baskin Robbins. Once again, our many thanks for the assistance of the parents who helped chaperone during the day. We will not have a field trip on March 22nd due to the Purim Car?nival. This is a wonderful event, so please plan on taking your chil?dren and enjoying a great day of fun, food and frolic. Mark your calendars for April 5,1992, which will be our next field trip. The Congregation Ner Tamid Reli gious has had a very busy semester, and is keeping up the pace. Our school has grown TREMENDOUSLY, and we are bursting at the seams. We are thrilled to have so many smiling faces in our school. Due to our overflowing enrollment, we need more classrooms. Toward this end we have instituted a few fundraisers. We just finished a Passover candy sale. Special thanks to Millie Silverstein who coordinated this wonderful event. With?out Millie?s efforts and diligence, we would not have had such a successful sale. In addition to getting to eat some delicious candy, the proceeds of the sale enabled us to sub-divide a large classroom into two smaller rooms. The pizza fundraiser is set to begin very shortly. The children will be taking orders for pizzas, and then the older chil?dren will actually make the pizzas. There will be an ice-cream party for the class (grades K - 3) selling the most pizzas, and the older children will have the opportu?nity to make their ?dream? pizza after selling 7 pizzas. Don?t forget the annual Purim Carni?val! In addition to fun, food and games, there will also be a great raffle. Preschool has been going great the last few months. We had a Valentine exchange with the children. We all had a great time when the children made picture frames for their parents for Valentines. We hope everyone loved their gifts. We had a visit from Discovery Toys so the parents could see what?s on sale and what?s new. There were many great things to see and buy. We are going to a radio station for a visit. The children are very excited, and we are looking forward to this special field trip. That?s all the news for now. Have a great month!! Hope?fully that means you enjoy the programs and the chance to so?cialize with old and new friends. We will have some entertaining programs coming up in the near future that you won?t want to miss. Several people have asked phone committee members about planning ?socials?. We aren?t sure what these members have in mind, so please corner us at a meeting and let us know. We aim to please! Once again an invitation is extended to all senior Temple members to join us. On the first and third Thursdays of every month you?ll find us enjoying our $1.00 lunch and program at the Temple. We now have close to 200 members, nearly half of whom attend meetings regularly. We have a group of recently widowed people who meet with therapist Sandy Greenblatt-Ziskrout for group counseling. There are also pan and bridge games. All activi?ties are open to men and women, married or single. So come and be part of a lively, growing orgaization. (r Sisterhood News It?s not too early to think of sending your kid to camp. As you know, Sisterhood has a Campership program, which enables us to help you with some of the costs of Jewish camp.
