On Friday, November 1st, 1991, the Congregation, led by Rabbi Sanford Akselrad, will come together to honor TWO distinguished members, Alfred Rostov and Milton Wasserman. These individuals have given many years of unselfish service to Congregation Ner Tamid. Eighteen years ago, Milton was right there, support?ing the establishment of Ner Tamid. Through the years when we could not afford a Rabbi, Milton assisted with services, meeting and greeting everyone. He did this for over 16 years. He has served on the High Holiday Committee as well as many other Committees as they worked to make our Temple ?a Special Place to Belong?. All the mosaic tile work around the Temple was created by Milton, showing his pride and committment to Ner Tamid. Alfred, ?Alfie?, has been a Temple fixture for many many years. He was our first maintenance man, making sure the Temple was opened and closed when necessary; turning off the lights to save on electricity; working with all our auxiliaries and their functions; and generally responsible for the continued existence of our physical facilities. Over the years, Alfie has donated so many items we have needed that it is almost impossible to list them all. Thanks to him we have lawn equipment, audio equipment, storage closets, bulletin boards and many other items. Alfie also purchases and maintains all the flowers in the front of the Temple in loving memory of his wife Frances. We will also be honoring all our new members and there are quite a few. This year we have been blessed with unprecedented growth and we can?t wait to honor these families. A special picture taking session will take place at 7:30 p.m. prior to Services on Nov. 1st. The Membership Committee has planned an interesting evening not to be missed. Come join our Temple family! The child would then touch the honey and taste it. The lesson to the young student was that learning is sweet. Although our religion has never lost sight of this ideal, we have, as adults, allowed that lessen to grow dim. Many of us feel that our religious education is somewhat lacking, and hope that our children will learn more and remember more than we do. Yet, I ask, do you have to live with regrets? Isn?t there something you can do about it?? Yes! There is something you can do about it!! Over the next few months our Temple will be offering a variety of adult education programs. Many of you are familiar with my ?Meal & Spiel? series on Saturday mornings. You may also be aware of my summer ?Introduction to Judaism? course, as well as my book reviews, the next being on Chutzpah, by Alan Deroshwitz, on Sunday, November 14,1991, at 11:00 a.m. We are now proud to announce a B?nai Mitzvah class for adults. The adult B?nai Mitzvah class will be held on Sundays beginning on November 3,1991. Class will run from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Melissa Glovinsky, our B?nai Mitzvah tutor, will be the instructor of the class, which will culminate with a group Bar/Bat Mitzvah in June of 1992. The students will learn to read Hebrew, as well as learn to chant many of the melodies we use in the Shabbat services. Throughout the year, I will take part in the course to add additional insight and background into our religion. There will be a charge for the program, and it will be open only to Temple members. If you are interested, please call my secretary, Sheryl, at 733- 6292, or speak to either myself or Melissa Glovinsky. The class size is limited. There you have it, a new beginning, a new program, the first of many I hope. All designed to remind us of that which we might have forgotten, ?learning is sweet?. Now for the challenges ahead....! B?Shalom, Sanford D. Akselrad TOT SHABBAT Mark your calenders now for the next Tot^^^ Shabbat. This is a special Shabbat morning^^B program designed for children 2-6 years of age and their brothers and sisters. Rabbi Akselrad conducts a service especially abbreviated for younger children, thanks to the work done by this years chairperson - Betty Stahl. Following services, the children will participate in excit?ing arts and crafts projects, followed by a lunch, to complete a fun-filled morning. The Rabbi led an abbrevi?ated service, after which we all ad?journed to the library for donuts, ba?gels, orange juice and coffee. The topic, ?Black / Jewish Relations: Where are We Headed?, was very interesting. Rabbi Akselrad shared with us articles on the rise of Black anti-semitism on college campuses, as well as on the Crown Heights inci?dents. The discussion was enlighten?ing and thought provoking. The next Meal & Spiel will be on Saturday, November 16, 1991, at 10:00 a.m. The topic will be a current event. Further details will be an?nounced later. We hope to see you there. Our religious school is bursting at the seams, and there are children everywhere you look. It is fabulous!! There are some space problems, but this is something that can be worked out as long as we have competent people - and we do. Thanks to all of you for your support of last month?s activities - those of you who did not attend, missed some very nice gatherings. Special thanks to the people who opened their homes for various events. Rabbi and Joni hosted a lovely affair for the paid up members of Sisterhood. Wonderful and plentiful food and drink in a warm and friendly atmosphere - a very nice evening and a great way to start the Sisterhood year. A new member dessert was hosted by Dyane and Sig Kohnen in their home. As usual, Dyane prepared for the immediate city, and we all forgot our diets. It was great seeing so many new faces and sharing so many different ideas. The ?Good As New? sale involved a lot of people doing a lot of work, but it was fun and we raised some money. Many of us have less in our homes thanks to our donations. It was a good event and all who donated their time deserve our heartfelt thanks, especially Helen Zliser and our custodian, Cliff Jamerson. Just a short comment about the Jewish Holidays. We all come to services on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, but often forget about Succot and Simchat Torah. These last holidays are wonderful and warm celebrations. The services are appropriate for both young and old, and those who did not attend should mark their calendars and be sure to be there next year. Some events that need our support, help, and/or attendance are coming up this month. Our next social event at the Temple is a Game Night on November 16, run by Mary and Jerry Fox. It promises to be a fun night and will only be better if you attend and call for your favorite game. Check your bulletin or call the office for more information. The Sisterhood Chanukah Bazaar is November 10. It is always a good time to get your Chanukah supplies and gifts, and the Sisterhood can always use your help and support. Come for lunch, then shop ?til you drop!! I?m still making my pitch for participation from both new and old members. Get active in the Temple - join a committee - be a participating part of our Temple family. As we grow, we need new ideas, and fresh ways to look at the old ones. I wish you all a very happy Thanksgiving. We have a lot to be thankful for, and we need to take time to remember the less fortunate. FALL BOOK REVIEW........NOV. 4TH "CHUTZPAH" Rabbi Akselrad will once again treat the Congregation to a fall book review to take place on Thursday, November 4, at 11:00 a.m. At that time Rabbi Akselrad will review Alan Dershowitz?s controversial new book, CHUTZPAH. In Chutzpah, Mr. Dershowitz provides a wonder?ful and insightful reflection on his generation of Jews in America: the changes they?ve witnessed, the changes they?ve created, and the changes still waiting to take place. Chutzpah is also a personal story about growing up in the Bronx, attending Yale Law School, and discrimina?tion on Wall Street. Immediately preceding the book review is a Sisterhood General Meeting with a light lunch to follow the book review. The cost of the lunch is $5.00. Please make checks payable to Congregation Ner Tamid Sisterhood. Your check will be your reservation. Please send your check no later than November 10. i ?>) Dishwasher Mr. and Mrs. Abe Fox recently do?nated a commercial dishwasher to our kitchen. Earlier this year Mr. Fox also donated a commercial refrigerator and freezer. Due to their wonderful generos?ity our kitchen is a much more efficient place to work. It?s truly wonderful to have such generous Congregants in our syna?gogue. Page 4 Congregation Ner Tamid Save up to 50% when you dine, go to the movies, theatre, sports events or travel. The scenery has been beautifully painted by local ?artist to the stars? Joey Skillbred and our own rebbetzin, Joni Akselrad. Our Preschool is always grateful for your support. Remember, if you would like to make a contribution to the Pre?school Fund or donate playground equip?ment, toys, or books in new or good condition, please see Rabbi Akselrad or the Preschool Director, Julie Gruber. rr TEMPLE WISH LIST L 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. The concert consisted of many old and new favorites, and was enjoyed by over 100 people. The concert was a wonderful event, well received by the audience. Ms. Ginsberg led the audience in many sing-a-longs, and invited the children to join her on the stage for some sto?ries and songs. Many thanks to Dr. and Mrs. Etcoff and Paul and Sharon Cohen for their help in making the concert a great success. Without their support, the afternoon would not have been possible. Julie Gruber, the Preschool Di?rector, has several of Ms. Ginsberg?s tapes and sing-a-long books for sale. She can be reached at the Temple on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. ........ -JJ KOL NIDRE APPEAL THANK YOU to all the individuals of our Congregation and the Community who gave to our Kol Nidre Appeal. SIMCHAT TORAH/CONSECRATION On Friday, October 4, 1991, Simchat Torah was cel?ebrated with a special service and Consecration of our new Religious School students. Twenty-five new students were consecrated in a won?derful ceremony presided over by Rabbi Akselrad. The stu?dents were new first and sec?ond graders. Each student was given a blessing by Rabbi Akselrad, and received a cer?tificate and a miniature Torah from the Religious School. One of our new members, Debbie Stadt, made lovely Torah covers for the children. Denise Schnitzer pre?sented the children with their certificates, while Debbie Stadt handed the Torahs to them. Religious school Prin?cipal, Jeanne Schomaker, co?ordinated the evening. Ileene Spoor, the First grade teacher, and Dotty Gross, the Kinder?garten teacher, did a wonder?ful job with their students. They were assisted by stu?dent helpers, Andy Gratz and Melissa Kaufman. During the service the Jr. Choir sang many beautiful songs. Thank you to Renee Campos, Choir Director, Lori Frankl, and Alan Hirsh for their hard work and expertise. The Jr. Choir was wonderful. They all worked very hard, and it shows. There was a Kindergar?ten and First grade Shabbat dinner before the service. The wonderful dinner was catered by The Educated Palate. Table decorations were done by Joni Akselrad, who did a lovely job with them, as usual. The Oneg was sponsored by the Kindergarten and First grade parents, the Godorov Family in honor of Jordan Godorov?s Bar Mitzvah and Dee Klein and her husband to be, Gerald Epstein, in honor of their nuptials. All the room parents did a great job, and the Oneg was excellent. Mr. Williams will explain to us how we can establish our own Scouting troops. Scouting is flourishing in Jewish Communities with 17 percent growth in youth mem?bership and 22 percent growth in units during the past 3 years. ?It is the mission of the Boy Scouts of America to serve oth?ers by helping instill values in young people and, in other ways, to prepare them to make ethical choices during their lifetime in achieving their full potential.? We urge all parents with boys from 1st grade and up to attend this meeting and help us obtain our goal of establishing Scouting Troops for our children. For more information call Mich?elle Benedict at 361-5215. Hope to see you there!!! i - -------- J (? \ NTTY NTTY, now beginning it?s third successful month, has some incred?ible activities planned in November! This month, we will be having two fabulous programs: a social and a fundraiser. November will definitely be a month filled with fun, excite?ment, education and friendship! NTTY stands for Ner Tamid Temple Youth, and it is the youth representation of Congregation Ner Tamid. NTTY participates in some pretty sensational activities! To kick off the year, we?ve already had a car wash, a creative service, three educa?tional programs, and a social action weekend in Tucson, Arizona, with other youth groups. If you are a ninth to twelfth grader interested in meeting new people, learning more about Judaism and the world around you, and hav?ing FUN, please contact Dotty Gross (advisor) at 456-4147, Stefanie Bernay (President) at 454-0259, or Alan Hirsh (Advisor) at 458-8066. We?d love to see some new faces!!! (r ? \ MTTY NTTY NEWS Our first event of the newly formed 4th/5th graders youth group took off with plenty of gutter balls, a few spares, and even some strikes. Sunday, October 13, right after Religious School, we boarded Peter Schomaker?s van and headed west for the Gold Coast where we had three bowling lanes just waiting for us. We had the option to ?brown bag? our lunch or buy something from the snack bar. The Gold Coast gave us our shoes free so we had a little extra money to spend on ?junk food?. We bowled 2 games and boy, did we have fun! Our next event is scheduled for Sunday, November 17th, right after Religious School. We?re off to the movies!!! Which one? We haven?t picked one yet, but well do so about one week before the event. Maybe, if we have enough time, we can stop for pizza first! Lunch to be paid for by our advisors. Thanks, advisors! If you plan to go with us, you have to call our advisors, Peter ' Schomaker (362-4384), or Sheryl Kogan (873-7769) to let them know. Hope you can come!!! ^ ---------------------------------JJ ff ...........................- ..................... ^ PRESCHOOL NEWS Our Preschool opened on September 4,1991 with a great group of children. During the High Holidays, Rabbi Akselrad came to visit and told some wonderful stories. To start with, we had a great fund raiser on September 29th. Judy Caplan Ginsburgh gave a wonderful concert. It was a great afternoon of music and fun. We want to thank Dr. & Mrs. Etcoff and Paul and Sharon Cohen for their generous help with the program. October was very busy. We had Officer Vicky from Metro come to visit and talk about strangers. She brought a movie and gave the kids coloring books. Officer Vicky will be back to talk about self-esteem, and we will also be having Bob Chow from the Fire Department to talk about fire safety. On Wednesday, October 30 we had a Holloween party for the kids with the help of their parents. It was great fun! At this time we have 14 full-time students enrolled. If you would like to see our program please call us and we will arrange your visit. We would love to see you. That?s it until later this month when we will be getting ready for Thanksgiv?ing.
