These immigrants, arriving now at a rate of almost one thousand per day are challenging the government and people of Israel to provide adequate housing and jobs and to integrate them with Israeli society. Dr. Kollins, past President of Ner Tamid and Mike Novick, Vice President of Jewish Federation and member of the National Young Leadership Cabinet of the United Jewish Appeal, will speak of their experiences and impressions of Opera?tion Exodus on Friday, February 8th. The trip was arranged under the auspices of the United Jewish Appeal and provided unique op?portunities for the participants to meet with American, Israeli and Russian officials involved in this mass Jewish immigration. Phillips Jack RadmanCongregation Ner Tamid RABBI?S MESSAGE February 2nd marks an important date for the Jewish community of Las Vegas. It is ?Super Sunday? and the start of the Federation?s annual campaign for 1991. Literally hundreds of volunteers representing every Jewish organization in the city will be on the phones trying to reach as many people as possible with the intent on raising funds for our community and world Jewry. Anyone who has ever done phone solicitations knows that it is not always a pleasant task. In a perfect world the caller would be greeted with a warm response, ?Yes, I know that this is a crucial time for the Jewish people. Count me in to give all I can. I want to help.? And believe me, the growth of the Federation?s yearly campaign indicates that more and more people are answering the call enthusiastically and generously. But there are others who don?t greet the caller so enthusiastically. They either refuse to give or simply resent being asked. Perhaps, too, they don?t realize the importance of giving to this particular campaign. As one who has devoted his life to Judaism I can tell you that the giving of Tzedakah is of prime importance to the survival of our people. In fact if we were to ask the question, ?How is it that our people have survived for so long, despite persecution, despite assimilation, despite all odds?? We can find the answer by looking in the mirror. Each one of us is a link in the powerful chain of Jewish survival and continuity. By our caring, by our giving, WE make Judaism a reality. The Federation?s annual campaign is used to help the various Synagogues in our community. In addition, Jewish Family Service, the Hebrew Academy, Holocaust education, and the Jewish students at UNLV are but some of the constituencies helped by our Federation. And world wide the Federation is part of a broader campaign which helps Jews in every part of the world. And it should be noted that it is rare that there has been a more important time to give than now. For now we have a chance to rescue the Jews of Eastern Europe. Now we have a chance to rescue the Jews of Ethiopia. And now we have a chance to bring millions of Soviet Jews to Israel in what will prove to be the greatest Jewish Exodus of all time. When the phone rings February 2nd, please pick it up and be counted. And if by some chance you are missed, give the Federation a call. There is no time like the present to help save the future. Sanford D. Akselrad Rabbi ? ______ JEWISH LECTURE SERIES CONTINUES, AT NER TAMID With his subject ?Pirke Avot (Sayings of the Fathers): ATreas- ure of Piercing Insight?, Rabbi Morris L. Rubenstein will be the second speaker on the Annual Jewish Community Lecture Se ries, Sunday, February 24, at 7:30 p.m. Community involved individuals and organizations and the five congregations in?vite you, your family and friends to the winter/spring series of 1991. Rabbi Rubenstein is the Rabbi at Valley Beth Israel in Sun Valley, California, and teaches the ?Sayings? in nine sessions each fall and winter at the University of Judaism?s Department of Continuing Education. President?s Message On behalf of the Board of Directors of Ner Tamid, I want to thank each of you for your support of our various congregational mitzvot, such as donat?ing books and toys for the future Preschool, children?s clothes for the Assistance League School Bell Project, and your recyclable newspapers, aluminum cans, and glass. It is an important part of Reform Judaism to care about others and we are truly a caring community at our Temple. In February we will repeat our very successful program of last February. Again we ask that you bring in your small ?hotel samples? of shampoo, hand lotion, soap, etc., along with similar products from the store. In addition, we would like to have towels, washcloths, etc. that are still usable, but no longer an important part of your linen supplies. These will be donated this year to the Friendship Corner, a facility for the homeless that provides them a place to prepare for job interviews and a phone number and address for potential employers to contact them. This facility was suggested to me by Sister Klaryta, a Holocaust survivor whose family was murdered for hiding Jews in their home in Poland during World War II. She has always been a supporter of the Jewish community and it would be a great way to ?return the favor?. We are tentatively planning a Goods and Services Auction at the Temple during the month of May. This will be an evening of socializing, dessert and bidding on items donated by our congregants, as well as others in the community. A lawyer, psychologist, accountant, etc. would donate an hour of their services. An expert tennis or racquetball player could offer to teach/play with the highest bidder. A dinner for four could be given by a gourmet cook. Any wholesaler or retailer might donate a sample of their goods. We are setting up a committee for this event and would welcome your participation. SISTERHOOD TO OFFER SPRING BOOK REVIEW Everyone loves a good story. And who can resist the charm and wit of a good Yiddish story? On Thursday, March 14h at 11:00 a.m., Rabbi Akselrad will review the recently published book, Yiddish Folktales edited by Beatrice Silverman Weinreich. This fabulous new work consists of Jewish folktale from dozens of countries around the world. The art of storytelling has been an integral part of Judaism for hundreds of years. This collections seeks to bring the best and wittiest of Jewish storytellers to the modem audience. At his review, Rabbi will share with his audience selected stories and how Jewish storytelling has shaped the ?Jewish Mystique? through the ages. The book review will take place Thursday, March 14th at 11:00 a.m. in the Temple library. A light lunch will take place immediately fol?lowing the book review. New printer for apple computer SUNDAY MORNING PRESCHOOL PROGRAM A HUGE SUCCESS On January 13th Congregation Ner Tamid began a preschool pro?gram open to the entire Community. Modeled sifter the ?Mommy, Daddy & Me? programs, over 18 children and their parents attended a session full of fun and learning. A toddler's program (for 2 1/2 to 5 years old), it begins at 9:00 a.m. every Sunday morning and lasts one hour. The program meets in the Temple Social hall. The instructor, Denise Schnitzer, is currently the Pre?school Director at Green Valley Ath?letic Club and has taught toddler?s programs in Las Vegas for many years. TOT SHABBAT Mark your calendars now for this successful program once again this year. Tot Shabbat is a special Sabbath morning program designed for children 2-5 years of age and their siblings. Last year over 80 children participated in the Tot Shab?bat program. Geared especially for younger children, Rabbi Akselrad will con?duct a special abbreviated service for the children. Following services, children will participate in exciting arts and crafts proj?ects and have lunch to complete a fun filled morning. This per?son would create a brand new 5 day a week Preschool program at the Temple. This position would require someone with good administrative skills and a background in education. To prepare for the future daily mid-week Pre-school, scheduled to open this fall, everyone is asked to donate toys, puzzles, books, records, tapes, etc. your children no longer use. Any items that cannot be used by the new per-school will be donated to a children?s shelter. A letter from Ner Tamid for a tax deduc?tion will be available. Dorothy Herman, who has presided over the group for five long years, was highly praised for her dedication and hard work. Ruth Goldman and Anne Frisch, outgoing Treasurer and Secretary, were thanked for their years of service as well. It is hoped that these capable ladies will continue to serve the Golden Chai Seniors.
