Each year we celebrate this wonderful holiday by coming together for a lovely dinner and service. It?s an exciting time for all our children and adults. This year we are very lucky to have Bella Schwartz, our cantorial soloist to lead us in song during dinner. Both our Adult and Junior .Choir will perform special Chanukah music at services. WE ASK EVERY FAMILY TO BRING THEIR OWN MENORAH FOR A SPECIAL LIGHTING CERE?MONY DURING SERVICES. Please do not miss this celebration of freedom and love. This wonderful holiday engenders excitement and pride among children of all ages. With eager anticipation children await the dreidl game, latkes, and of course some presents along the way. One can not help but notice that each year Chanukah has seemingly grown in importance and celebration while paradoxically observance of other Jewish holidays has often fallen by the wayside. After all, how many build their own Succah? Or observe Shabbat every week? How many observe Shavuot, Tu B'shvat and the entire week of Pesach? Yet, Chanukah, a minor Jewish holiday, has been embraced in a major way. Why? The answer, of course, is Chanukah?s close proximity to another, non-Jewish holiday, Christmas. We all recognize the reality that as a minority we are bombarded by messages for weeks on end about the importance of Christmas. And we don?t want our children to be left out. Thus, perhaps we over do it a bit around Chanukah time. We tell our children: ?Look, you get eight (count them!) eight presents!? Unfortunately, in doing so we are inevitably transmitting a simplistic message: ?Our holiday is 'better' than their holiday.? Think for a moment: most of the year we are comfortable with our Jewishness. Yet every now and then an issue or a situation arises where we must affirm who we are. But when December rolls aroimd, there can be little room for hedging. We are after all, who we are. We are Jewish. And we are Jews. But we must not forget: that is the point of Chanukah! Beyond all the presents and the spinning tops. Beyond embarrassment or feelings of being left out. Chanukah is a holiday which affirms Jewish pride for who and what we are. A few weeks ago I could not help but be struck by the irony of almost invariably low voter turnouts across the country at a time in history when country after country is going through major revolutions so that their people would have the right to vote. As Americans who have grown up in a free society, we take this important right for granted and often let if fall by the wayside. Chanukah represents a time in history when Jews had to fight with their very lives to retain their Judaism. Cha?nukah was a fight for religious freedom. It was a fight by a minority culture against unfair intrusion by the majority culture, (i.e., Judaism vs. Hellenism). Today, the battle for our children?s identity is far more subtle, but no less important. If we are truly to celebrate Chanukah, we must do so NOT as reaction to another culture, but as an affirmation to our OWN culture. Dreidls and menorahs can?t compete with the glitter of Christmas trees. But who says we have to compete? The message of Chanukah is that ours is a holiday of ethnic and religious pride. The message of Chanukah may not be displayed in the shopping malls or heard in the ?muzak? that fills elevator chambers; but its message is neverthe?less all around us. For each and every generation of Jews must fight for its survival. And each and every generation must stand up and be counted. Our affirmation of who we are is our ?vote? which elects the next generation of Jews. Let us not take our responsibility for granted - for there is too much at stake. May this season of Chanukah be a sea?son filled with much joy and blessing for you and your families. B?shalom, Sanford D. Akselrad CHANGE IN BOARD MEET- ^ ING DATE Q Beginning January, 1991 the Temple Board will meet on the second Tuesday of each month. Please mark your calen?dars accordingly. The time, 7:30 p.m., remains the same. All Temple members are invited to attend. SHELDON ROSENBERG ELECTED TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS Congregation Ner Tamid is pleased to an?nounce that Sheldon Rosenberg has been elected Trustee to the Board of Directors. His term becomes effective immediately. A member of our Congregation for only a year, Sheldon has been, active in a number of pro-( grams. A local CPA, Sheldon has also been elected Treasurer of the Brotherhood, our men?s club. President?s Message -1990 It is hard for me to believe that my current Board of Directors and I have been in office for a frill year. As with all jobs (real and voluntary), there are always some surprises in learning the routine. Frankly by the time I really understand my responsibilities, my term will lie completed. The first year has been a challenge, many times a joy, and sometimes a serious and difficult burden. Our congregants have made it all worthwhile with their support, concern, constructive criticisms, and caring. I hope to hear from many more of you soon. The Rabbi, Bella Schwartz, our cantorial soloist, the staff, as well as our Ner Tamid officers have completed a year with special rewards and dilemmas. Our choir led by Peter Bugel has become a source of great pride. Mariane Anderson, Lori Frankl, and Alan Hirsh have created a junior choir that is filled with enthusiasm. Our school continues to grow and diversify to meet needs of our children. To each of you, I wish a happy Chanukah. May 1991 be one of peace, good health and success for all of you. CONGREGATION NER TAMID THIS YEAR?S FACILITY HOST Page 6 Congregation Ner Tamid HOW CAN I HELP? CONFERENCE ON SYNAGOGUE PROGRAMMING FOR OLDER PERSONS The UAHC Committee on Jewish Family held a conference in Dallas on October 19-21 to discuss the issues con?cerned with the growth of the senior popu?lation as they affect the synagogue. In attendance were Rabbis, executive direc?tors, UAHC board members and others concerned with seniors in the synagogue and community - 26 participants in all. There were presentations regarding the responsibilities of the synagogue, the makeup of the senior population, the spiri?tual needs of seniors, etc. Also there were numerous workshops and group discus?sions allowing for input regarding these issues and their practical ramifications. Many ideas were exchanged for programs to involve the senior population in Jewish community life, both in the giving and receiving of services. It was determined that those attend?ing the conference would form the nucleus of an ongoing committee to study the prob?lems of our graying society and give input to our synagogues, as well as the UAHC to disseminate nationally. Our Temple can continue to be part of the program when it meets again next year in Baltimore at the UAHC-NFTS biennial convention. In the interim, it is anticipated that the ideas re?ceived will be very useful to Congregation Ner Tamid and to Golden Chai in planning for future programs. Anyone interested in specific infor?mation can contact Helen Zliser at 254- 6678. Rabbi Akselrad would like to be helpful to you and your family whenever possible, particularly by visiting Temple members and their families when they are in the hospital, or nursing homes. The Temple office tries to maintain a current list of those who are hospitalized, so please call the Temple office to let us know when you are going into the hospital. Office # 733-6292. An often asked question by Congre?gants and friends of our Congregation is, ?How can I best help the Temple ? What are some areas where l can specifically support the Temple? ? There are many, many needs. The following list, to be printed in our bulle?tin from time to time describe some of the many funds that we have at the Temple. Contributions to these funds are acknowl?edged in our monthly bulletin. ADULT EDUCATION: This fund provides support for many educa?tional programs throughout the year. Contributions to this fund will allow us to provide courses and speakers of Jewish content to our Congregants and the com?munity. ART & BEAUTIFICATION: This fund provides support for beautify?ing both the exterior and interior of our Temple. Contributions to this Fund al?low us to maintain our Temple grounds and to purchases art work, furniture and other decorative items for the Temple. BUILDING FUND: Contribu?tions to this Fund go towards maintain?ing our facility. In addition, gifts to this fund will help us attain our goal of building additional classrooms, office space and our Sanctuary. CIIOIR: Contributions to this Fund provides support for our Choir. This fund will be used to purchase robes, music and other items to support the Choir. FLOWER FUND: Assists the Temple in purchasing flowers to adorn our pulpit for special events. GENERAL FUND: Provides for the overall maintaining of our Temple budget. Membership dues provide only a portion of what it takes to run our Temple. Generous support of this fund allows our Temple to grow and provide additional creative programs to our membership. KOL NIDRE APPEAL: Only 60% of our Temple budget comes from dues. The remainder must be made up of contributions to the Temple. The annual ?Kol Nidre Appeal?, typically publi?cized at High Holiday time, is the ma jor means by which our Temple is able to sustain itself. LIBRARY FUND: Our fledg?ling library is in need of something very important - books! This fund allows the Temple to purchase books on Jewish topics both fiction and non-fiction. Many in the Temple, and especially the chil?dren in our religious school are regular visitors to our library. Our need for a larger number and a greater variety of books is deeply felt. M.B. DALITZ RELIGIOUS SCHOOL FUND: This fund is used to bolster our Religious School. OUTREACH FUND: This spe?cial program began at our Temple in 1989. Outreach is a program designed to provide programming and support to inter-faith couples and their families. Outreach helps integrate such families into Congregational life by providing social and educational programs on a variety of Jewish topics. Over a hundred people have participated our first year in this vitally needed program. PRAYERBOOK FUND: Pur?chasing a prayerbook for either the High Holydays or Shabbat is a lovely way to pay tribute to a loved one. PRESCHOOL FUND: Contri?butions to this fund go to support a preschool at our Temple. Monies are used for play equipment, educational toys, and many other supplies which will insure that our school is fund and excit?ing to our youngest children. RABBI?S DISCRETIONARY FUND: This fund allows our Rabbi to provide support for creative programs at the Temple which are not yet part of our yearly budget. In addition, this fund allows the Rabbi to help many in our Temple and in the community who are in need of temporary aid to help them through a difficult time. TEMPLE AUXILIARIES: Each of our auxiliaries, Sisterhood, Brotherhood and Golden Chai have their own special funds which allow them to support to variety of worthwhile en?deavors. From Oneg Shabbats to Cam- perships, from our gift shop to youth ac?tivities and Senior activities, our auxilia?ries provide much needed support to a variety of special programs. TEMPLE WISH LIST: Very often there are items needed for the Temple Budget. These items can often be easily donated by Congregants who are remodeling their home or updating their office equipment. YOUTH ACTIVITIES FUND: This fund provides support to our youth programs and youth groups. Our Temple has three youth groups, NTTY- Ner Tamid Temple Youth, for 9- 12 th grades; TNT-Teens of Ner Tamid, for 6-8th grades; and ??ITTY-BrTTY-NnTY? for 2-5th grades. Page 7 Congregation Ner Tamid Our plans to Launch a Temple Preschool are continuing unabated. Congregants and prospective congregants continue to ask, ?When will you have a preschool?? The answer de?pends upon our membership. Our goal has been to find a donor to build a playground and to raise $25,000 to launch our preschool. Thus far we have found a donor for our playground (!) and have raised $13,000. We are more than half way to our goal! Many ask why do we need to raise so much money to launch a preschool? There are several reasons: 1. ) It is anticipated that the school will loose money for at least the first two years of operation (we will need about 30 students to break even). Money is needed to carry us through this time. 2. ) A director for the school would have to start before the school was in place. This director would have to be paid before there was any income from school registration. 3. ) As a new school we would be competing for students with other preschools in the community. We would need to advertise heavily to get the word out about our school. Promotion can be very expensive. 4. ) A great deal of equipment needs to be purchased to provide for the school. While much of this equipment would last for many years, the initial start up costs are extremely expensive. Congregants can be helpful in trim?ming the cost of this area by donating good quality used toys to the Temple. Even now several congregants have donated beautiful items that are being stored in anticipation of our pre?school. The County Commissioners have given us two years to launch our school. One year has already passed. The Temple?s goal is to launch our preschool by fall 1991. Can we count on your support? SCHOOL NEWS ATTENTION PARENTS!! We are concerned for the safety of our children. Before, during and after services and after Sunday School we occa?sionally find children running around the Temple unchaperoned. Please, for the safety of your children, make sure they are supervised. TOT SHABBAT Mark your calendars now for this successful program once again this year. Tot Shabbat is a special Sabbath morning program designed for children 2-5 years of age and their siblings. Last year over 80 children participated in the Tot Shabbat program. Geared especially for younger children, Rabbi Akselrad will con?duct a special abbreviated service for the chil?dren. Following services, children will partici?pate in exciting arts and crafts projects and have lunch to complete a fun filled morning. A new member and new chairperson , Helene Smith, has promised a fun filled morning for all the children, ages 2-6. We have grown to almost 160 students. Our classroom walls are bulging. The dedicated staff this year have already started many excit?ing programs. One Mitzvah project all the students par?ticipated in was writing to our military in the Middle East. Thank you Linda Schnitzer for a great idea. Also, the religious school students collected 200 cans of food for the needy, which Bill Feldman of Jewish Family Services distrib?uted. A special thank you to Eileen Kollins for coming to our sukkah and demonstrating the lulov and etrog. The children especially en?joyed her stories. We have had two terrific Shabbat din?ners - grades six and seven did an outstanding job as did grade five. Special thanks to Mr. Mann, Ms. Abrin, Mrs. Klamian and of course, Alan Hirsh. The room parents for these grades, Wendy Rosenfeld, Sally Feldman, Gail Godorov, Debbie Karlin and Nancy Silber made these Shabbat dinners so memorable. Simchas Torah was especially moving this year due to the efforts of Cindy Goldham- mer and the consecration class of 1990. During the services the children were called to the bimah and blessed by the Rabbi. They were given special certificates to commemorate the occasion. A special thanks to Sheryl Kogan for all of her help and thoughtfulness. Last but not least, our wonderful Junior Choir, under the direction of Lori Frankl, Alan Hirsh and Mariane Anderson are doing an out?standing job. Their dedication every Sunday, including the month of August, has paid off. They sound sensational. NEWS In case you haven?t heard, NTTY is having a great year and this is just the beginning! We have had many programs, ranging from such controversial topics as alcohol and drug abuse to the definition of G-d. We also had a fun-filled beach party. We visited the Guiness Book of World Records Museum which was very interesting. November 29 - December 2 are the dates for the annual SWFTY event of winter conclave which is being held right here at our own Ner Tamid. There will be over 100 visiting teenagers from Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. Over this weekend we will have religious, educational and social programs. If you have been noticing many NTTY members hard at work, that?s probably what they are doing. As we have mentioned before, this is NTTY?s biggest year and we?re still growing. We are having a blast! Page 8 ReligiCongregation Ner Tamid BROTHERHOOD NEWS YES, BROTHERHOOD IS ALIVE AND WELL!!! Brotherhood has been meeting the last few months to reorganize into a viable active arm of the Temple. Dear Friends, Recently I traveled to a Western Region Sisterhood Convention and was truly impressed with what our neighbor?ing Sisterhoods were doing for their com?munities. Upon returning to Las Vegas, I decided our Sisterhood here at Congre?gation Ner Tamid needed to have more of a commitment to the less fortunate. In our Jewish Community as well as outside our circle, there are many people in need of the very basics of life, food being their primary concern. Because of this, we in the Sister?hood are creating a program called ?The Food Closet?. We ask all Temple mem?bers, as well as Sisterhood members, to please bring a can of food whenever you come to Temple. This food will indeed help those less fortunate than ourselves. Tzadakah should be a daily as?pect of every Jewish persons life. That is why this Mitzvah Project is so important. Please support us in our efforts. Shalom, Dyane Kohnen Sisterhood President WFTS CONVENTION The Western Federation of Temple Sisterhoods was held October 25th - 28th in Woodland Hills, California.
