Rabbi?s Message ?CHOOSING JUDAISM? With the growth of our Congregation comes the need for new programs and fresh ideas. I begin this rabbi?s message with a call for your involvement. There is a whole nost of committees ranging from youth ac?tivities, adult education and religious school for you to give your input and direction to the Temple. In addition, our auxiliaries, Sisterhood, Brother?hood and Golden Cnai provide wonderful ways for you to support the Temple in vitally important ways. For more information please give the Temple office a call. This fall sees the inception of two new programs for our Congrega?tion. In this bulletin you will see a variety of adult education programs for the fall/winter. Additionally I am currently looking forward to starting an Outreach committee at our Temple. Outreach is a national program sponsored by the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. The program is designed to help integrate interfaith couples, ana new converts into Con?gregational life. Last month we listened to Lydia Kukoff, the national director for Outreach speak at our Temple. In her speech she emphasized the need for a concerted, caring effort by the Congregation to meet tne needs of these families. Furthermore, in her books she has made the excellent point that whether one is born Jewish or becomes Jewish one must still make a con?scious choice to be Jewish. You will be hearing much more about Outreach in the months ahead. If you are interested in becoming a part of the Outreach committee please let me know. There are many reasons why someone joins a Temple. Some feel that it is the Rabbi or location. I am convinced that while those elements are important, people also look to a Temple to help them become more informed and involved with their Judaism. Under the direction of both their teachers, Mrs. Michel Zweig, and their music teacher, Alan Hirsh, the children will conduct the prayers before dinner, as well as participate in the service. This is a very special service, for this is the night that the first grade will become consecrated into the temple. Each child will be blessed by the Rabbi and be given a certificate honoring his Consecration. On that evening. Congregation NerTamid will have 18 new members. To life! In keeping with a tradition started last year, Congregation Ner Tamid is hosting a special Sabbath to honor all of our new members who have joined since last year. One special congre?gant will be chosen as the hon- oreeforwhothisyear?snew mem?bers ?class? will be named. A group picture of all of our new members will betaken and placed prominently in our Temple as a way of maintaining a history of ourTemple. Since last year over 60 new families have joined our Congregation. More information will follow in the next bulletin. Save this date for a memorable evening. FAREWELL RITA! Our hearts are happy and sad as we say goodbye to Rita Moses, our Executive Director. As of September 18th she retired. For over five years she has faithfully and admirably served the Temple, helping it to grow to over 275 families. But as Rita says, ?Its?s time to live it up.? In fact, Rita started her retirement with a Mediterranean cruise - are we jealous! Good luck Rita and I am sure we will see you soon. NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR We are happy to welcome our new Executive Director, Ruth Fite. Ruth and her husband recently moved here from Florida. A graduate of the University of Miami, Ruth has 15 years experience as an Executive Director, primarily with law firms. We are confident that Ruth?s experience will be a great asset to the Temple. Ruth will be coordinating all the Temple?s functions as well as being responsible for the office. If you need any information, please do not hesitate to contact her. MEfiL f?ND SPIEL On Thursday, October 26th, at 10:30 a.m. Rabbi Sanford Akselrad will be reviewing the book ?Choosing Judaism? by Lydia Kukoff. This book deals with issues relating to intermar?riage and conversion. ?Choosing Judaism? has been a nation?wide best seller for several years and has inspired thousands of people. The book review is sponsored by Congregation Ner Tamid Sisterhood.This event is open to the general community at no charge. There will be a luncheon following the book review, at ap?proximately 12:00 noon. For further information, call Betty Schloss at 876-2678 or Gail Allen at 361-5394. Once a month following Shab- bat morning services and some nash- erie, Rabbi Akselrad will lead a discus?sion on the Torah portion of the week and a contemporary Jewish current event. Past discussions have included the skinhead problem in Las Vegas, abortion, Israel, the laws of Chanukka, and a Jewish view of the Bible. The programs begin at 10:00 a.m. in the! Temple library. Plan to attend on Octo?ber 14, November 11 and December9. Page 4 Congregation Ner Tamid Outreach at Ner Tamid OUTREACH PROGRAM DEALING WITH INTERMAR?RIAGE LAUNCHED AT CONGREGATION NER TAMID. On Sunday evening September 17th, 200 people from a variety of back?grounds gathered at Con?gregation Ner Tamid to lis?ten to Lydia Kukoff the Na?tional Director of Outreach for the Reform Movement. Outreach is a nationwide program designedto provide programming for interfaith couples and their families. Over 800 Congregations throughout the country now have an Outreach program. Lydia Kukoff?s presentation served as a springboard for Congregation Ner Tamid?s efforts to begin their own pro?gram. In commenting on the program Rabbi Akselrad ob?served how touched people were in coming to listen and learn from Lydia Kukoff. ?I have heard Lydia Kukoff many times, and I have known her for many years. I am always amazed at how she manages to capture an audience and to communicate her message. I am very excited that our Con?gregation has been chosen to launch a major Outreach program in our community. Intermarriage is not an issue that will just ?disappear.? We have a responsibility to welcome new ?Jews by Choice? into our Congregations and to integrate interfaith couples into Congregational life.? Rabbi Sanford Akselrad with Lydia Kukoff, National Director (Outreach) OUTREACH COMMITTEE NOW FORMING To meet the needs of the growing number of interfaith couples in the Las Vegas community, Congre?gation Ner Tamid is pres?ently forming an Outreach committee. The purpose of this committee is to provide programs and activities for interfaith couples, newcon- vertsto Judaism, andthose seeking a better under?standing of Judaism. The committee will plan a vari?ety of programs of a relig?ious, cultural and social nature. Outreach is a na?tional program sponsored by the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. Throughout the country hundreds of Congregations have started Outreach committees to meetthe needsofthe estimated 10,000 people who convert to Judaism each year and the thousands of interfaith couples that currently exist. If you are interested in learning more about Outreach or becoming in?volved in the formation of this commit- Page 5 Congregation Ner Tamld SANDY COHEN - Sandy has had over 10 years of experience in working with children of all ages. She received the "Jewish Incentive Award? for her innova?tive class projects. Sandy received her B.A. degree in education from Roosevelt University in Chicago. She has been a director for a preschool and large private school in California. Sandy is returning for her second year as our religious school principal. MICHELE ZWEIG - This is Michele?s second year living in Las Vegas. Michele is a teacher in the Clark County School District. She will be returning once again as our 1st Grade teacher. LORI FRANKL - Lori has been a Temple member for two years. She is also a member of our choir. She attended High School at Chapperal High and received her religious education at Temple Beth Shalom. Lori has worked with primary aged children for the past four years in Tacoma, Washington, In addition , Lori served as a B'nai Mitzvah tutor for the past two years. She will be returning for her second year as our third grade teacher. JULIE KATZ - Currently, Julie is a so?phomore at UNLV. she Her will be major?ing in premed psychology, freshman year was spent at the University of Juda?ism in Los Angeles, California. There, Julie studied many aspects of Judaism which she is eager to share with her class. Julie also taught 10th grade Hebrew high there. During her high school career, she was an active mem- berof USY, and she served as President of the group her senior year. Julie is our kindergarten teacher. ROSE DUNN - Rose has been a won?derful mainstay of the religious school for 15 years. Almost every member of the Temple family has been touched by Rose?stalents asshe hasservedto impart her love of Judaism to dozens upon dozens of students over the years. Rose is known for her devotion and commit?ment to the Temple. She will be teaching second grade. JUDY SCOTT-PARRY - Judy is a profes- sionaldancerand artist. She has traveled extensively throughout the Middle East and Europe. Judy will be teaching the fourth grade.SABRA LESSNICK - Sabra will be teaching our 5/6th grade religious school class. She graduated from Clark High School in 1982 and from the University of Arizona, Tucson in 1986. She is certified to teach business and math, grades 7-12 and computers, grades K through 12. In high school, Sabra was a member of Gorbena BBG and was crowned Queen Esther to the 1979 Queen Esther Ball. Sabra loves to travel and says she's been throughout the Orient, the United States and Israel. Sabra looks forward to being a vital part of educating our Jewish youth at Ner Tamid. AMIE BLUMENTHAL - This is Amie?s second year living in Las Vegas. She has taught for three years in South Central Los Angeles. In addition to teaching in our religious school, Amie is teaching in the Clark County School System. Amy was very active in the Jewish community in Los Angeles and spent a summer in Israel working in the Children?s House on Kibbutz Ketura. She will be teaching the 8th grade pre?confirmation class on Tuesday evenings. MELISSA GLOVINSKY - This is Melissa?s fifth year of teaching the Alef Hebrew class at Congregation NerTamid, and this is her second year of teaching our "Introducing to Hebrew? to First, Second and Third graders. In addition to teaching every Sunday morning, Melissa works on an individual basis with B?nai Mitzvah students. She is also the advisor to the Junior Youth Group, TNT (Teens of Ner Tamid). When Melissa is not at Congregation NerTamid she is a sopho?more at UNLV, majoring in Elementary Education. RABBI SANFORD AKSELRAD - Rabbi Akselrad has taught Confirmation for the past 6 years. He has taught Hebrew and Religious Schools at all grade levels for the past 11 years in California and Ohio. Rabbi Akselrad will beteaching the ninth grade Confirmation class. In addition he will be teaching Gimmel, the third year of Hebrew. MARLA GERECHT - Marla will be joining us this year as a teacher for our 7th grade B?nai Mitzvah religious school class. Marla's the editor and one-man staff of The Jewish Re?porter? newspaper and says when she turned 13, her parents encouraged into joining a Jewish youth group. From that point on, she?s participated in a number of different Jewish organizations. Marla held a variety of leader?ship positions in NTTY (Ner Tamid Temple Youth), USY, BBG and was president of Las Vegas Council BBYO. Currently, Marla is actively involved with the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas; this Fall she?ll be directing their Leadership Development Program. BERTHA STEINBERG-KLEINBERG - Bertha moved to Las Vegas five years ago, attending UNLV, where she was graduated with a BS in business admini?stration. Before coming to the U.S., she attended school in Tel Aviv with empha?sis on Judaic education. Bertha has been married for three (3) years and has a baby son. She is teaching our Bet level Hebrew class.r Congregation Ner Tamld LARRY NEWMAN - Larry was in the Air Force for twenty (20) years. While at Ramey Air Force Base in Puerto Rico, he started a Sunday School under the spon?sorship of the Jewish Welfare Board. He is now retired and volunteers his time at the Air Force hospital at Nellis. Larry has had a strong Jewish education and will be a tutor for the Hebrew school. Larry is re?turning for his second year with the relig?ious school. ADAM STERNBERG - Adam re?turns to our religious school as one of our most diligent teaching assis?tants. Adam has been a member of the board of NTTY, as well as on the board of SWFTY , the Southwest Federation of Temple Youth. Adam is a freshman at UNLV. ALAN HIRSH - Alan has taught in our religious school for five years working with all grade levels. He is the advisor for Ner Tamid Temple Youth, the Senior High Youth Group. Alan is currently a student at UNLV. This year, Alan is re?turning as our music specialist to the religious school. JENNIFER GROSS - Jennifer is a so?phomore at Valley High School and vice president of NTTY. Jennifer plays forthe Varsity Tennis Team and is a member of the Students United Political Action. This is Jennifer?s second year as a student aide. LISA KOLLINS - Lisa is a sophomore at Bonanza High School and is the treas?urer of NTTY, as well as being in the Rainbow Company, a children?s theater group. Lisa and her family have been members of Congregation NerTamidfor eleven years. The Brotherhood has calendar dates set for the next several months with a variety of events. Most activities are scheduled to be held on the THIRD THURSDAY of each month. Try to attend as many of these gatherings as possible. Discussion continues on the possibility of sponsoring a Boy Scout Troop which could serve Ner Tamid?s youth as well as other Congregations throughout the Las Vegas area. Such a troops meetings and campouts could be conducted without compromising observation of the Jewish Sabbath. It is our understanding that all such present organiza?tions meet on Friday nights.... The possibilities are great, but would require a great broad based effort to accomplish. Your input and comments are encouraged. October 19, as the third Thursday of the month has been declared to be a "Card and Game Night.? Friendly stud games, royalty, suds in-a-tub, anti ups, hold?ums, one-eyed- jacks, and ace-in-the holes, will be present! It?s three days from Monday, three days from Sunday, and we hope no conflict with a local basketball team, so come on over to a very exclusive gathering at NerTamid 7:30 p.m. Bring dollars to play with, and a thirst to visit with your fellow Brotherhooders. This is not a fund raiser, rather a meeting just for fun. November 16, the third Thursday, again, will be a meeting of the minds, all of ours, and yours too, in a General Meeting at Ner Tamid 7:30 p.m. Objectives, goals, plans for upcoming and future programs are to be discussed. As you all know, we have a long list of many exciting things that will take place, so please attend all of the meetings to hear about them. On Friday night, October 6th the ?Golden Chai? Seniors will Host the Oneg Shabbat after services. My fondest with is that we all participate in this event and make it very lovely. On October 19th we will have Steve Long speak on Fire Survival. (NerTamid Temple Youth), vice-president and I?d like to say that this year has had a superb start. At SWFTY Camp, in Prescott, Sharon Dunn was appointed to the regional board as Religious Chairperson. (Congratulations Sharon!). We started off the year with the ?NTTY Olympic Games? on Labor Day weekend and ourf irst meeting was a program on ?What Youth Group Can Do For You? which went very well N.T.T.Y. also discussed Interfaith dating and went to the lecture given by Lydia Kukoff. The attendance has been outstanding. Spirit throughout the group is tremendous. Our first regional event is the weekend of October 14 and its a leadership training event. We are hoping NTTY will be well represented. And don?t forget it?s never to late to join up. Take the chance and be a joiner if you are high school age, be part of one of the greatest experiences ever.
