Services conducted by Rabbi Akselrad Oneg sponsored by Sisterhood 8:00 P.M Without question one of the most beloved of Jewish holidays is that of Passover. Almost everyone can recall fond memories of seder meals complete with matza ball soup, charoses, and chicken set against the back drop of beautiful songs and camaderie. Amidst the reverie of the occasion we should not -must not- forget the reason why Passover has endured for thousands of years. It is a holiday which speaks to the heart of the Jewish historical and religious ex?perience. Once we were slaves, today we are free. And yet, even today there are Jews in other countries who are not free to practice their religion and faith. The Jews of the Soviet Union, Ethiopia and Syria in particular come to mind. As we join together in prayer and thanksgiving this year, let us be mindful of Jews throughout the world. Do not think that through our awareness and action nothing is being or can be done. Those abreast of Soviet Jewry in particular know that over the past few months amazing changes are taking place. Hundreds of people are learning Hebrew. A Jewish cultural center is open?ing; and the number of Jews emigrating the Soviet Union has increased. Rabbi?s Message Passover teaches us that the price of redemption is the constant battle to retain our dignity, freedom and faith. May we take this message to heart, even as we in?still this responsibility into our children, and our children?s children. B' Shalom, Sanford D. Akselrad Rabbi HAVE A VERY HAPPY PASSOVERCongregation Ner Tamid hosts program on Intermarriage ?When Love Meets Tradition? On Thursday evening March 9th over 80 people gathered at Congregation Ner Tamid to discuss issues related to Intermarriage. Sponsored by Sisterhood, and led by Rabbi Sanford Akselrad, the program discussed a wide variety of issues including holiday celebration, rais?ing of children, and becoming a part of the Jewish com?munity. Those attending represented a variety of ages and backgrounds. There were young couples who were thinking about getting married, to those who had mar?ried 40 years ago when intermarriage was almost unheard of; to parents and grandparents whose offspr?ings were involved with non-Jews. Rabbi Akselrad discussed in particular the impor?tance of integrating families into congregational life and the unification of faith in a family. Be good Christians. Or be good Jews, but don't try to raise children in both faiths. We owe it to our children to instill in them a sense of pride, identity and community." In addition Rabbi Akselrad stressed the importance of families not taking religion for granted. He noted the need for con?tinued study and the importance of celebrating holiday" and joining a synagogue as a means of becoming a part of a Jewish community. One of the highlights of the two hour program was the showing of "When Love Meets Tradition", a 45 minute film presentation produced by the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. The film powerfully il?lustrates the tensions involved in interfaith families through the presentation of honest discussions and in?terviews with several couples contemplating marriage. This program is one of several planned over the next year. Beginning in June on Sunday mornings Rabbi Akselrad will again offer his popular "Introduction to Judaism Class". The course is open to the entire com?munity. In September, Lydia Kukoff, the national direc?tor of Outreach will conduct a community wide lecture at Congregation Ner Tamid. Outreach is a national pro?gram which encourages congregations to provide sup?port groups of an informal social and educational nature for interfaith couples as a means of intergrating them into the general Jewish community. Basic Judaism Class Begins June 4th Rabbi Akselrad will be offering a class in Basic Judaism which will begin on Sunday, June 4th, and will meet weekly through August 27, 1989 from 9:45 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Temple library. This course is open to those who feel a gap in their Jewish education, interfaith couples, those who are con?templating conversion into Judaism, as well as those who are interested in learning more about Judaism. The class teaches basic knowledge of Judaism, life cycle, holidays and an overview of Jewish history. Tuition is $15.00 ($25.00 non-members) per in- dividual/couple. This does not include textbooks re?quired for the course. A limited number of books will be available for purchase the first session of class. For more information, please call Rabbi Akselrad. For registration, please call Norma at the Temple office, 733-6292. ! Welcome New Members | Jody & Robert Maes j Sidney Goldberg ? Lloyd & Martha Reiser ? Jack & Judith Mutnick %? 1 ! The call to the Bond Organization was announced by David Hermelin, its International Campaign Chairman. It came in a cable addressed to Ambassador Meir Rosenne, the new President and Chief Executive Officer of Israel Bonds. Mr. Hermelin reported that in response to the Prime Minister's appeal, all Israel Bond buyers will be asked to purchase "an additional Israel Bond, over and above their regular purchases, in order to provide loan funds for Israel's Development Budget, thus making possible employment opportunities for the expected newcomers". Noting that the Bond Organization was helpful in the settling in Israel of Soviet Jews in the past, the Prime Minister asserted that "the special Bond effort would be in the tradition of a similar campaign in 1972 when the Bond Organization helped make possible the uccessful and productive settlement of Soviet Jews who arrived in Israel in those years." He continued: "The announcement of a plan to pro?vide good jobs and housing for Soviet Jews in Israel would encourage greater numbers of them to come to the Jewish State." Mr. Hermelin stated that a detailed campaign plan for extra Bond subscriptions in behalf of Soviet Jews ar?riving in Israel will be announced shortly. Inside The Engelstadt Affair__ One of the most controversial issues affecting both the Las Vegas Jewish and general community has been the revelations at the Imperial Palace. Much has been written and said in the media. Much has happened and continues to happen behind the scenes. Find out for yourself what really happened - on April 10th at 7:00 JEWISH COMMUNITY LECTURE SERIES Professor David Ellenson's lecture is the fourth and concluding evening in the 7th Annual Jewish Communi?ty Lecture Series, Sunday, April 16th, at 7:30 P.M. Dr. Ellenson is rabbi, professor, lecturer, editor and writer. Currently he is Director of Judaic Studies and Associate Professor of Jewish Religious Thought at Hebrew Union College of Los Angeles, and Visiting Facul?ty Member, Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at UCLA. Professor Ellenson holds degrees from William and Mary College. University of Virginia, his M.Phil. and Ph.D. from Columbia University, and M.A. and Rabbinical Or?dination from Hebrew Union College in New York. The speaker's lecture is on Modern Religious Jewish Thought, and specifically, on the thought of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel (1907-1972) and his bearing upon Judaism In Our Time. In the lecture, he says that Rabbi Heschel was "one of the great thinkers of the Jewish people and one of the great teachers of Judaism in our century, who combined tremendous scholarship in traditional Jewish studies and mysticism with the soul of a poet to inspire thousands of modern Jews and Gen?tiles to seek a more meaningful religious life and social involvement." Come and be inspired by the thoughts of this outstanding lecturer and his subject. Bring the junior and high school children. Have You Noticed the trees enhancing our lobby!! Thanks to Sheryl Kogan's efforts, they were donated to the Temple by Nick Poulakis from Plants, Inc. Many Thanks Sheryl! p.m. Temple Brotherhood will host two speakers, Greg Kamer and Michael Cherry, who have been instrumental in representing the interests of the Jewish Community on behalf of the Las Vegas Jewish Federation. The Passover Symbols ELIJAH'S CUP A special cup filled with wine, placed pro?minently on the table. According to legend. Elijah visits every home on Passover and drinks from his cup. MATZA Three matza, placed one on top of the other, are used during the Seder. They are seen as symbolic of the three categories of Jews: priests (kohanim), Levites and Israelites. Passover is one of the most important opportunities we have for reaffirming to ourselves and our children the continuing vitality of our heritage and for rededicating ourselves to the ageless tradi?tion of freedom which is one of the cornerstones of our faith. We all know that the holiday children remember the most is Passover. They remember the Seder, the days of preparation, the beautiful way the table was set, the special foods, the family gathered around, listening to the story of the exodus, joining in singing the ancient melodies, opening the door for Elijah, and searching for the afikomen. They remember it all. ?Congregation Ner Tamid invites you to join Rabbi & Joni Akselrad on an Exciting Family Cruise for 3 Nights and 4 Days aboard the ADMIRAL CRUISES LOS ANGELES TO CATALINA ISLAND TO MEXICO ? NTTY NEWS ______________ As the Congregation prepares for Pesach, we recall times in our heritage when we were considered second-rate citizens. We are taught that we should never allow ourselves, or other people, to be treated in such a manner ever again. In line with this lesson, NTTY obligates itself to help Camp Swift, a camp for underprivileged children. We would like to thank those of you who share our dream of making the world a better place and supported us during our annual phone-a-thon last month. NTTY's major focus for April is hosting the annual SWFTY Spring Conclave from April 13-16. The weekend will be pro?grammed around the theme of Israel. We invite all of you to join us on Friday, April 14 for services when NTTY will be con?ducting a creative service on Israel for SWFTY and the Con?gregation. If you would like information on either Camp Swift or Spr?ing Conclave or NTTY in general, please contact me at 435-6947.
