Abstract

[DEACCESSIONED] Collection is comprised of personal and community photos collected by Stan Armstrong dating from the 1940s to the 2000s. The collection also consists of photos of the historic Westside neighborhood of Las Vegas, Nevada and its African American community. Also included are promotional posters from Stan Armstrong's documentaries and memorial service programs of members of the African American Community.

Scope and Contents Note

[DEACCESSIONED] Collection is comprised of personal and community photos collected by Stan Armstrong dating from the 1940s to the 2000s. The personal photos document Stan Armstrong and his family's experience living in Westside Las Vegas, Nevada and attending Kit Carson Elementary School and Rancho High School. The community photos document the African American experience in Las Vegas including nightlife, church activities, education, entertainment, and employment. The collection also includes photos and publicity shots of famous African American entertainers such as Sammy Davis Jr., Jackie Robinson, and The Platters. The materials provide information on the Armstrong family's life in Las Vegas as well as African American life and community in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Biographical / Historical Note

Stan Armstrong is an African American and Choctaw filmmaker and founder of Desert Rose Productions. Armstrong was born in 1954 in San Francisco, California and moved to Las Vegas, Nevada with his parents in 1955. Armstrong attended Rancho High School and the race riots of the 1970s which he created a documentary titled, The Rancho High School Race Riots. Armstrong graduated from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 1995 with a degree in Communications and Film History. Armstrong then worked for UNLV as an instructor in African American Film and Ethnic Studies. As of 2017 Stan Armstrong is a documentary filmmaker and has produced such films as The Misunderstood Legend of the Las Vegas Moulin Rouge and Invisible Las Vegas.
