Biographical / Historical Note

Grace Hayes was born in Springfield, Missouri on August 23, 1895. Hayes moved to San Francisco, California at the age of ten and began singing at nightclubs at the age of fourteen. In 1912 she married Joseph Lind, and their son Joseph Conrad Lind (later known as Peter Lind Hayes) was born in 1915. Hayes starred in films from 1929 to 1950, most notably in King of Jazz (1930) and Zis Boom Bah (1941). She moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in the 1940s and purchased the Red Rooster lounge in 1947 and renamed it the Grace Hayes Lodge. The lodge and nightclub was located at what is now the southern gate of the Mirage Hotel and Casino. Hayes owned and operated the nightclub until she sold the property to Steve Wynn in 1960. She

maintained a residence on the property until her death on February 1, 1989.
