Biographical / Historical Note

Kenneth M. "Ken" Hanlon was born May 16, 1941 in Baltimore, Maryland. In his undergraduate years at the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University, Hanlon studied with the National Symphony's principal trombonist, Armand Sarro. After receiving his master's degree in music from the Peabody Institute, Hanlon moved to Las Vegas, Nevada to perform at numerous hotels and casinos. After two years of performing on the Las Vegas Strip, Hanlon solicited the UNLV Music department chair for employment as an adjunct faculty member and formally joined UNLV in September of 1970. Two weeks after he was hired, the department chair resigned, and Hanlon stepped into this position, which he held for sixteen years. After working as an associate provost, Hanlon served as director of the Arnold Shaw Popular Music Research Center, located at UNLV. He retired in May 2018 and held the title of professor emeritus until he passed away on November 27, 2018.

Hanlon helped found the Nevada Dance Theater (now Nevada Ballet Theatre) in 1972 and was instrumental in the establishment of the Nevada School for the Arts, New World Brass Quintet, Las Vegas Opera Association, Las Vegas Chamber Players, and the Las Vegas Jazz Society. Throughout his career, Hanlon was associated with several groups, including: the Las Vegas Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Si Zentner Ensemble, and the Hank Levy Big Band.
