Abstract

The Shar Rednour and Jackie Strano Papers on S.I.R. Productions (1984-2011) contain the personal and professional papers of Rednour and Strano, two lesbian filmmakers, writers, and activists from the 1990s until the 2010s. The collection contains the personal papers of both Rednour and Strano, including correspondence between the pair before they married in 2006. The collection also contains the professional files of Rednour and Strano in their capacity as creators of SIR (Sex, Indulgence, and Rock and Roll) Video in 1998. Materials include financial documents, correspondence, scripts and editing notes, crew information, publicity photographs, and direct order forms for S.I.R. Productions. In addition to records on SIR Video, the collection also contains a number of sex-positive and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) publications from the LGBTQ scene in San Francisco, California during the 1990s.

Shar Rednour and Jackie Strano were front-runners in the lesbian pornography production scene in San Francisco, California in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Rednour and Strano created the groundbreaking sex education series Bend Over Boyfriend and award-winning feature films such as Hard Love and How to Fuck in High Heels, Sugar High Glitter City, and Healing Sex: A Mind-Body Approach to Healing Sexual Trauma.

Biographical / Historical Note

Sharlene "Shar" Rednour worked on On Our Backs, a lesbian sex magazine, from 1991 to 1993. She was also a production assistant for Fatale Video, and her writing appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies during the 1990s. Her book The Femme's Guide to the Universe (2000) was nominated for a 2001 Lambda Literary Award. Shar was an original member of Sister Spit, a lesbian-feminist spoken-word and performance art collective that was based in San Francisco, California. Rednour founded SIR (Sex, Indulgence, and Rock and Roll) Video Productions alongside her then-wife, Jackie Strano in 1998. The company produced the groundbreaking sex education series Bend Over Boyfriend and award-winning feature films such as Hard Love and How to Fuck in High Heels, Sugar High Glitter City, and Healing Sex: A Mind-Body Approach to Healing Sexual Trauma. Shar has been featured in HBO's Real Sex, Pornucopia, and Hot and Bothered: Feminist Pornography.

Shar Rednour and Jackie Strano married in 1996 and have three children together, and later divorced.

Jackie (Jack) Strano is a Canadian born alt-folk singer/songwriter currently based in Nanaimo, Canada on Vancouver Island. Strano is a non-binary trans-masculine Butch queer musician who has fronted various bands and projects, including The Hail Mary's who are featured on the soundtrack of the Wachowski sisters' noir cult thriller film, Bound. In 1993, Strano began working at Good Vibrations until 1998 when they left to work at another sex-toy retailer. Strano returned to Good Vibrations in 2009 and became the company's Executive Vice President, a position they held until 2017. Strano founded SIR (Sex, Indulgence, and Rock and Roll) Video Productions alongside their then-wife, Shar Rednour in 1998. The company produced the groundbreaking sex education series Bend Over Boyfriend and award-winning feature films such as Hard Love and How to Fuck in High Heels, Sugar High Glitter City, and Healing Sex: A Mind-Body Approach to Healing Sexual Trauma. Strano has been featured and quoted in various publications including Playboy, Playgirl, SF Bay Guardian, Bay Area Reporter, and various other publications as well as featured in HBO's Real Sex, Pornucopia, and Hot and Bothered: Feminist Pornography.

Jackie Strano and Shar Rednour married in 1996 and have three children together. They later divorced.
