Biographical / Historical Note

Halina N. Kretkowski was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on January 26, 1946. Halina and her parents immigrated to the United States in November 1955 on the Queen Mary from Southampton, England. They settled in Wausau, Wisconsin, and Halina graduated from Wausau High School in 1964. She attended the University of Wisconsin as an undergraduate. In 1972, Halina enrolled at the Golden Gate University School of Law in San Francisco, California. She passed the California bar exam in 1978 and remained in California, where she married Edwin D. Jones in 1983. Jones passed away two years later, in 1985. Kretkowski worked as an insurance lobbyist for the California State Automobile Association (CSAA). This work brought her to Nevada frequently, because the CSAA was one of the largest automobile insurers in Nevada during the 1980s and 1990s. She married Nevada state senator John Vergiels in 1991. She passed the Nevada bar exam in 1992 and began practicing law in the state. Halina and John were married until John’s death in 2009. As of 2020, Halina N. Kretkowski lives in Las Vegas, Nevada.
