Abstract
The Halina Kretkowski Papers (1962-1991) consist of documents detailing Halina Kretkowski’s life during high school, college, and law school. The majority of the materials are notes and coursework from Kretkowski’s studies at the University of Wisconsin and the Golden Gate University School of Law in San Francisco, California. Also included are political magazines and personal correspondence.

Scope and Contents Note
The Halina Kretkowski Papers (1962-1991) contain academic records and coursework, personal correspondence, and political magazines. The majority of the materials are notes, exams, and coursework from Kretkowski’s studies at the University of Wisconsin and the Golden Gate University School of Law in San Francisco, California. Kretkowski studied subjects such as English, political science, history, and linguistics at the University of Wisconsin, and contracts, insurance law, torts, and civil procedure at Golden Gate University. The academic records also include admissions and financial documents and Law School Admission Test (LSAT) scores. Kretkowski studied abroad in Europe for one year during high school, and the collection includes letters from family and friends written to Halina during this time. Other items include political magazines detailing state legislature and government.

Biographical / Historical Note
Halina N. Kretkowski was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on January 26, 1946. Halina and her parents immigrated to the United States in November 1955 on the Queen Mary from Southampton, England. They settled in Wausau, Wisconsin, and Halina graduated from Wausau High School in 1964. She attended the University of Wisconsin as an undergraduate. In 1972, Halina enrolled at the Golden Gate University School of Law in San Francisco, California. She passed the California bar exam in 1978 and remained in California, where she married Edwin D. Jones in 1983. Jones passed away two years later, in 1985. Kretkowski worked as an insurance lobbyist for the California State Automobile Association (CSAA). This work brought her to Nevada frequently, because the CSAA was one of the largest automobile insurers in Nevada during the 1980s and 1990s. She married Nevada state senator John Vergiels in 1991. She passed the Nevada bar exam in 1992 and began practicing law in the state. Halina and John were married until John’s death in 2009. As of 2020, Halina N. Kretkowski lives in Las Vegas, Nevada.
