Records are comprised of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Mathematical Sciences Department graduate student essays from 2007 to 2010. The essays were compiled for a work called, "A History of the Mathematical Sciences Department." The essays cover multiple topics ranging from classes taught to the percentage of women professors in the department.

Scope and Contents Note

Records are comprised of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Mathematical Sciences Department graduate student essays from 2007 to 2010. The essays were compiled for a work called, "A History of the Mathematical Department." The essays cover multiple topics ranging from classes taught to the percentage of women professors in the department. The project was started to celebrate UNLV's fiftieth anniversary. Also included is an audio file on the history of the Mathematics department which is narrated by Samuel Hansen. The records document the establishment of the Mathematical Sciences Department at UNLV as well as how the department was run.

Biographical / Historical Note

The Mathematical Sciences Department at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) helps students along paths leading to branches of science and technology as well as to mathematical specializations. The program prepares students for work in business, government, and educational institutes.

Mathematical sciences is a broad term that includes, in addition to areas of mathematics, those academic disciplines that are primarily mathematical in nature but may not be universally considered subfields of mathematics proper.

Acquisition Note

Materials were transferred to the University Archives by the Mathematical Sciences Department; accession number 2017-046.

Processing Note

These records are unprocessed. A rough inventory of the accession was created by Maggie Bukowski in 2017. To prepare the inventory, the described materials were reviewed to create a contents list, estimate dates, and identify material types. No other work has been performed on the materials. In 2020, Karla Irwin processed one optical disc and converted the audio file to an access copy.
