Abstract

The H. E. “Hap” Hazard Photographs (approximately 1940-1969) depict politicians in Southern Nevada. Senator Alan Bible, Governor Edward P. Carville, Senator Mike Mansfield and Senator Pat McCarran appear in photographs at political events. Along with images depicting politicians, an aerial shot of downtown Las Vegas, Nevada in the 1950s is also present.

Scope and Contents Note

The H. E. “Hap” Hazard Photographs, approximately 1940-1969, depict politicians in southern Nevada. Senator Alan Bible, Governor Edward P. Carville, Senator Mike Mansfield and Senator Pat McCarran appear in photographs at political events. Along with images depicting politicians, an aerial shot of downtown Las Vegas, Nevada in the 1950s is also present.

The items described include photographic prints and negatives, slides; some of the prints have corresponding negatives which are not listed separately. Items listed are photographic prints unless otherwise specified. Images listed specifically as negatives exist only in that format.

Arrangement

Materials remain in original order. Many of the photographic prints have corresponding negatives or slides. Negatives have been housed separately and can be found in box 05.

Biographical / Historical Note

Harry Edward "Hap" Hazard (1893-1971) served two terms in the Nevada State Assembly, served as chairman of the Clark County Democratic Party, and operated a real estate business. Hazard was a member of the Ninth Infantry in World War I. He moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1931 and held leadership positions in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He became very active in the Clark County Democratic Party. In the 1930s, Hazard was appointed to the Nevada Tax Commssion, first in the liquor tax division and then in the gasoline tax divsion. He served in the 1939 and 1947 Nevada sessions of the Nevada Assembly and in 1947 was elected Speaker of the Assembly. He also held positions on the State Council of Defense, the State Boxing Commission, and the Clark County Housing Authority. Following Hazard's legislative service, he went into the real estate business. He operated a partnership with former Las Vegas mayor, C. D. Baker. Hazard passed away in 1971 after a long illness. His wife, Ruth E. Hazard (1907-1997) was active in the Mesquite Club. She passed away in 1997.
