Joyce Moore Papers (MS-01040)

Abstract

The Joyce Moore Papers (1958-2019) contain documents relevant to the life and career of Joyce Moore, a longtime resident of Las Vegas, Nevada. The collection contains Rancho High School yearbooks, and awards and grants from when Moore was a student at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in the early 1990s. Materials include research papers, event posters, photographs, and business cards related to Moore's work as an archivist in the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Special Collections and Archives. The collection also contains photocopied newspapers and handwritten notes related to research done on the Las Vegas sewage system and local hospitals for Moore's academic papers.

Scope and Contents Note

The Joyce Moore Papers (1958-2019) contain documents relevant to the life and career of Joyce Moore, a longtime resident of Las Vegas, Nevada. The collection contains Rancho High School yearbooks, and awards and grants from when Moore was a student at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in the early 1990s.The collection contains varied documents related to her time as a student and employee at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) including both her undergraduate and master’s degree commencement booklets, correspondence related to her membership with Phi Alpha Theta, her work on projects for the Nevada Women’s History Project, certificates for her contributions to PSI Seminars, a conference paper acceptance letter, and a UNLV Legacy Award. Moore’s typed historical research papers on Las Vegas entertainment, music, dancers, showgirls, and casinos are comprised within this collection. Lastly, this collection includes numerous photocopied newspaper clippings and handwritten notes related to projects on Las Vegas sewage and Las Vegas hospitals that span from the early 1930s until the middle of the 1960s.

Biographical / Historical Note

Joyce Moore was an historian and archivist in Las Vegas, Nevada. She attended Sunrise Acres School and then Rancho High School from 1958 until 1961. She then owned her own ceramics business. In 1987, she enrolled at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) as an undergraduate student. She received her bachelor’s degree in 1992 and then enrolled in the history master’s degree program at UNLV. She received her master’s degree in 1997 and based much of her historical research on Las Vegas entertainment history. Soon afterwards, in April of 2001, she was hired as an archivist at the UNLV Special Collections and Archives, where she worked until March of 2019. In 2019, upon her retirement, she received a Legacy Award from UNLV.
