Biographical / Historical Note
The Urban Chamber of Commerce (formerly known as the Nevada Black Chamber of Commerce) is an "advocate for the creation, growth and general welfare of African American businesses in the Las Vegas community." The Urban Chamber of Commerce actively promotes the expansion of business opportunities on behalf of its members through referrals, partnerships, seminars, technical assistance and marketing. The Chamber focuses on economic and business development, education, conventions, tourism, and special projects. Its main mission is to foster an environment that promotes development of members and Black owned businesses.
The Nevada Black Chamber of Commerce was established July 7, 1980, built upon an idea proposed by Katherine Joseph. Founding president Sarann Knight-Preddy led the first Board of Directors that also included Dr. William "Bob" Bailey, James O. Porter, Reverend Sam Roberson, Lou Conner, Al O'Neal, Ken Brass, Reverend Emanuel Wasson, Ruby Amie-Pilot, and John Gardner. In an effort to better and more broadly serve Southern Nevada, the Nevada Black Chamber of Commerce was renamed the Urban Chamber of Commerce in 1997. Past presidents of the Chamber include Harvey Phelps, Dorothie Clark, Sherman Rutledge, and Hannah Brown.
