Kathy Eastland Papers (MS-01174)

Abstract

The Kathy Eastland Papers (1972-2003) document Kathy Eastland's experiences working in Nevada brothels. Materials include ephemera and memorabilia collected by Eastland from various brothels in Nevada such as the Mustang Ranch, the Moonlite BunnyRanch, and Old Bridge Ranch. Included in the collection are brothel menus and photographs of Eastland and other sex workers socializing in the brothels. The collection also contains notes, research, and drafts of Eastland's manuscript Hell on Heels which describe her experience working in the brothel industry. Also included are prototypes of a game created by Eastland called "Brothelopoly" and some campaign materials about Jessi Winchester, a former brothel worker who ran for public office in Nevada. There is a small amount of materials about Joe Conforte, former owner of the Mustang Ranch, and some personal effects of Eastland including a motorcycle jacket and storage trunk.

This material is made available to facilitate private study, scholarship, or research. Kathy Eastland transferred all right, title and interest to Gregory Bock in 2023. In 2024, materials were purchased from Bock via Vigilante Rare Documents. At the time of purchase, Bock transferred all right, title, and interest they had in the Kathy Eastland Papers (MS-01174) to UNLV. Biographical / Historical Note

Kathy Eastland was born on July 22, 1960 in San Francisco, California. Eastland grew up in Marin County, California and moved to Reno, Nevada at the age of 23 and began working at the Grand Ballroom nightclub where many of her good friends were sex workers. In 1988, Eastland became a sex worker using the moniker "Destyny" after the Grand Ballroom closed. She worked at various Nevada brothels for the next fifteen years including the Mustang Ranch, the Chicken Ranch, the Moonlite BunnyRanch, Kitty's Guest Ranch, Old Bridge Ranch, and the Sagebrush Ranch.

In 1997, Eastland began to write a manuscript, Hell on Heels, about her experiences working in the brothel industry in Nevada. The manuscript includes details about working for different brothels, advice for sex workers seeking employment in brothels, and anecdotes from Eastland's personal experiences.

In June 2004, Eastland took over ownership of the Wonder Bar in Reno, Nevada, a dive bar she frequented. As of 2024, Eastland runs the Wonder Bar with her friend Theresa Finelli.

Materials were purchased from Vigilante Rare Documents in 2024; accession number 2024-009.

Processing Note

In 2024, Tammi Kim accessioned the collection and later rehoused the collection and created the inventory in ArchivesSpace. WPS files were transferred off of one 3.25" floppy disk and converted to PFD/A for access.

Appraisal Note

Acquired by Sarah Quigley, director, as part of UNLV Special Collections and Archives holdings in sexual entertainment and economies. The original acquisition included around 0.5 linear feet of empty envelopes, containers, and mini liquor bottles that were removed due to lack of research value and preservation issues.
