Biographical / Historical Note
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Creative Services unit offers photography, video production, and graphic design services for the UNLV community. In September 1971, UNLV established a formal unit to create and collect photography on campus. Prior to 1971, photographs were contracted out to freelance photographers or collected from various outside sources, such as local newspapers. UNLV Creative Services is responsible for creating visual materials for on-campus clients and taking photographs of events such as athletics games, student life, and commencement ceremonies.
Clients include the various colleges of UNLV, administration, the UNLV Foundation, athletic departments, and the Nevada System of Higher Education. Images are used in university publications, programs, and brand marketing for print and online media. Prior to 1996, the department captured images entirely on film; the use of digital cameras began in 1996 in conjunction with film. In 2003, Creative Services began exclusively taking digital photographs.
Over the years Creative Services has gone by different names including the Photo Department, UNLV Photography, and UNLV Photo Services. It has been part of the Audio Visual department, Telemedia Services, the Office of Information Technology, and Marketing and Public Relations.
As of 2022, Creative Services is part of the University Communications department in the Division of Integrated Marketing and Branding.
