El Mundo, the Las Vegas, Nevada-based Spanish-language newspaper, was founded in 1981 by Edmundo Escobedo, Sr. and his son, Edmundo “Eddie” Escobedo, Jr. The newspaper was published in weekly print editions from 1981 to March 2025. At the height of El Mundo’s reach in the Las Vegas Valley, the newspaper circulated 45,000 copies per week and employed 12 staff members. Facing changes in the media landscape, print operations of El Mundo ceased with the March 28, 2025 issue.

In 2026, Landon Paljusaj accessioned the collection, separated the newspapers for cataloging, rehoused the archival material, and wrote the finding aid in ArchivesSpace. Hayley Botz rehoused the newspapers and created an item-level inventory for inclusion in the Libraries' catalog.
Administrative Information
Acquired by Aaron Mayes, Visual Materials Curator, as part of UNLV Special Collections and Archives holdings on the Spanish-speaking community in Las Vegas, Nevada. Approximately 31 linear feet of duplicate material was returned to the donor.
A near-complete run of El Mundo from 1981-2025 was separated for cataloging and is accessible through the Libraries’ catalog.
Future additions to this collection are anticipated.
