Abstract
The collection is comprised of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Department of Anthropology and Ethnic Studies administrative records, memoranda, and correspondence dating from 1966 to 2006. The collection includes information about UNLV's department of Anthropology and Ethnic Studies from its inception at Nevada Southern University, its transition to UNLV, and research initiatives the department has undertaken.

Scope and Contents Note
The collection is comprised of administrative records, memoranda, correspondence, and research created by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Department of Anthropology and Ethnic Studies from 1966 to 2006. The early years of the collection document the Department of Anthropology and Ethnic studies as it transitioned from Nevada Southern University to UNLV. The latter part of the documentation highlights the internal workings of the Anthropology and Ethnic Studies Department as well as research conducted by professors and students. The records were primarily maintained by Don Schmiedel, a foreign language professor and former chair of the Department of Anthropology and Ethnic Studies. Don Schmiedel retired from UNLV in 1999.

Biographical / Historical Note
In 1968 Nevada Southern University (NSU) became completely independent of the University of Nevada, Reno. Campus President Donald Moyer then authorized NSU to form colleges and the College of Fine Arts was created. This college included the Anthropology Department. In 1969 Nevada Southern University became the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). In 1971 incoming University President Roman Zorn decided that UNLV had too many colleges and merged the colleges of Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences into the College of Arts and Letters. Both the departments of Anthropology and Ethnic Studies were housed in this new college. On January 1, 1990 the college renamed itself the College of Liberal Arts. The Department of Anthropology and Ethnic Studies was housed under this department and as of 2017 remains a member of the college.

These records are unprocessed. A rough inventory of the accession was created by Maggie Bukowski in 2017. To prepare the inventory, the described materials were reviewed to create a contents list, estimate dates, and identify material types. No other work has been performed on the material.
