Biographical / Historical Note

The first Gay Pride Parade in Las Vegas, Nevada was held in 1983. Gay Pride had a rocky start in Las Vegas due to the combination of poor community organization, lack of funds, and the AIDS epidemic. Starting in 1987, Las Vegas Gay Pride became an annual event that grew every year. The Las Vegas Lesbian and Gay Pride Association (LVLGPA) formed in 1992 to officially coordinate the planning of Las Vegas Gay Pride. The group changed its identity again in 1995 and incorporated into the Southern Nevada Pride Association, Inc. (SNAPI). Since the mid-1990s, SNAPI can boast several achievements in terms of its event planning. In 1996, the organization successfully persuaded a major Strip hotel and casino to become a sponsor of Gay Pride and has continued growing its sponsor list every year. It currently remains the sole organizer of Las Vegas Gay Pride.
