Biographical / Historical Note

The area known as present day Caliente, Nevada was established by two escaped slaves from Arkansas in the early 1860s. In 1901 a railroad track was built through the Culverwell Ranch. Building the track did not come without a dispute. The Union Pacific and San Pedro, Los Angeles, and Salt Lake Railroad fought for the only strip of land in the area where a railroad track could be easily built. In the end the Union Pacific gained control over the track. With the railroad running through the area, the town of Caliente, named for the hot springs in a nearby mountain, was established in Lincoln County, Nevada.
