The Victor Kunkel Photograph Collection (approximately 1890-1943) consists of black-and-white photographic prints and negatives, dating primarily between 1940 and 1943. The majority of the images depict the construction of Basic Magnesium, Inc. (BMI), in Henderson, Nevada; the remaining images depict a variety of locations and events in Kunkel's birthplace, Winslow, Arizona.
Victor V. Kunkel was born in Winslow, Arizona in 1890. He moved to California with his mother after his father's death in 1915. By 1917, Kunkel established a sheet metal business in California. In 1941 his company contracted with Los Angeles, California- based McNeil Construction to provide materials for the construction of Basic Magnesium, Inc. (BMI), in Henderson, Nevada. Kunkel married Marjorie Peterson in 1930; the couple moved to Las Vegas and established an engineering scholarship for University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) students. Kunkel died in 1977.
