The Major Galen F. Bartmus Collection of Nellis Air Force Base Photographs is comprised of black-and-white photographic prints taken at and around Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, Nevada between 1950 and 1953. Featured in all photographs is the base Operations Officer, Major Galen F. Bartmus. Images include several promotional photographs for Frontier Days, candid photographs of the base during the Korean War, and a search-and-rescue effort conducted for a downed airman in the desert near the base. Biographical / Historical Note

Galen Fuller Bartmus was born in Calipatria, California in 1919, the eldest son of Peter Bartmus and Dora Fuller. In 1942, Bartmus married Victoria Axenty before enlisting in the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC) and training as a pilot. Assigned to the 66th Bombardment Group, he served the course of World War II in France, returning to the United States in 1946. In 1947, he was released from the USAAC and assigned to the newly formed United States Air Force (USAF). In 1949, Bartmus was assigned as the base Operations Officer at Nellis Air Force Base, Las Vegas, Nevada, serving as a liaison between the military and civilian population.

Bartmus retired from the USAF with the rank of Major in 1957, moved to Los Angeles, California with his wife and children, and opened two popular miniature golf courses in Hollywood and Burbank.

Galen Fuller Bartmus died in 2001.
