Biographical / Historical Note

Argosy Gaming Company opened its first riverboat casino in Alton, Illinois in 1991, and went public in 1993. In 1994, Argosy Gaming Company expanded by opening riverboat casinos in Missouri, Louisiana, and Iowa. By the late 1990s, Argosy Gaming Company was licensed to run these casinos in all five cruising states, making them the only company at the time to do so.

In 2004, Argosy Gaming Company was acquired by Penn National Gaming Inc. for $2.2 billion, a merger that raised concerns in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This was because the two companies were the only ones providing casino services in that city. In 2005, the FTC agreed to allow the merger provided Penn National sold its Argosy Baton Rouge property to a competitor to prevent a monopoly in the area.
