Biographical / Historical Note
The Frontier Girl Scouts Council (FGSC) administered the Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) program to girls from across Southern Nevada. The council oversaw programming, adult leader training, and cookie sales and other fundraisers. It also managed after school drop-in facilities for girls, a central service center, and campgrounds. In approximately 2008, the Frontier Girl Scouts Council was renamed Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada.
In 1932 the first Girl Scout troops in Southern Nevada formed in Boulder City. Eventually five troops served the small city and were organized under an official council in 1942. The Henderson and Las Vegas councils were created in 1943 and 1944 respectively. The Southern Nevada councils were consolidated as the Frontier Area Girl Scout Council in 1950. Later Nye, Esmeralda, and Lincoln counties as well as Needles, California were added to the council. In 1976 the Frontier Area Girl Scouts Council was renamed the Frontier Girl Scouts Council.
The FGSC obtained land at Lee Canyon outside of Las Vegas, Nevada for a camp in 1949. Known as Camp Foxtail, it went into full operation in 1954. The FGSC also acquired land near the Red Rock Recreational Area in 1966 for a camp. The FGSC Service Center at 2530 Stewart Avenue was dedicated in 1961 and the council used the property until 2000. In the 2004 the FGSC moved to the Donald W. Reynolds Girl Scout Leadership Center at 2941 Harris Avenue in Las Vegas, Nevada.
