Biographical / Historical Note
Florence “Flossie” Vallen (born Florence Levinson) was born on November 21, 1930 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Florence and Jerome moved from Ithaca, New York to Las Vegas, Nevada in June 1967. Florence created a non-profit charity “Friends of the Library” that helped fund public library programs in Las Vegas, Nevada. She also co-authored the book
Jerry Vallen (born Jerome Jay Vallen) was born on October 2, 1928 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Jerry received his B.S. from Cornell University in 1950, his M.Ed from St. Lawrence University in 1957, and his Ph.D from Cornell University in 1976. In June 1967, he and his wife, Florence, moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where he was hired by Nevada Southern University (now the University of Nevada, Las Vegas) to serve as dean for the newly created College of Hotel Administration. Jerry Vallen retired from UNLV in 1989 after twenty-two years of serving as dean and was promoted to Dean Emeritus. Jerry Vallen passed away on July 30, 2020.

Materials were periodically transferred to the University Libraries Special Collections and Archives; accession number 2020-012. Also in 2020, materials were donated by Rebecca Gabriele; accession number 2020-108.
Processing Note
These records have been minimally processed. In 2020, Joseph Puentes, Mary Anilao, and Tammi Kim rehoused the collection and created the finding aid in ArchivesSpace. Tammi Kim and Joseph Puentes transferred files from two 3.25" floppy disks and converted .DOC files to PDF/A. Other files in .WPD format were not converted. The materials from the 2020 addition are unprocessed. Tammi Kim rehoused the collection and updated the finding aid in ArchivesSpace. No further work has been performed on these materials.
