Biographical / Historical Note
In 1849, the first gold discovery was made by Abner Blackburn, a Mormon guide, in what is now Dayton, Nevada. Additional discoveries in nearby areas of Lyon County, Nevada, drew prospectors to Dayton, and it became a mining and agricultural center by 1851. The placer-gold discovery at the mouth of Gold Canyon led to Dayton's settlement, distinguishing it as Nevada's first permanent non-Native settlement.
