Abstract

The James "Dee" Donithan Collection of Nevada Test Site Photographs (approximately 1970-1999) consist of 8x10 photographs depicting flowers, landscapes, wildlife, workers, work sites, and testing equipment at the Nevada Test Site. The photographs were printed by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Mercury, Nevada, and collected into a binder by James "Dee" Donithan.

The photographs were printed by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Mercury, Nevada, and collected into a binder by James "Dee" Donithan.

Biographical / Historical Note

James "Dee" Donithan (1928-2019) was born in Rosiclare, Illinois. He served in the United States army during the Korean War, and earned his bachelor's degree in Geology from the University of Illinois in 1959. He married his wife, Ann, in 1959 and the couple later had two children. Donithan spent the next few years working in the oil and gas industry. In 1968, he moved with his family to Las Vegas, Nevada and worked for Lawrence Livermore Laboratory at the Nevada Test Site. In 1990, he joined Desert Research Institute (DRI) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) as a geological engineer. During his time at the DRI, Donithan worked for the Division of Hydraulic Sciences and analyzed effects of past nuclear testing and its impact on water.

In 2024, Sarah Jones accessioned the collection, removed photographs from degrading plastic sleeves, rehoused the collection into acid-free folders, and wrote the finding aid in ArchivesSpace.
