Abstract

The Muriel Stevens Papers (1969-2006) consist of materials documenting Stevens' career as a television cooking show host and newspaper columnist in Las Vegas, Nevada. Newspaper articles, correspondence, ephemera, certificates, and photographs provide information about her career, and to a lesser extent, her personal life. The collection also includes publications and records documenting the Nevada State Dairy Commission and the Las Vegas hospitality industry. The Video Recordings series consists mainly of episodes of the Muriel Stevens Show.

Scope and Contents Note

The Muriel Stevens Papers (1969-2006) consist of materials documenting Stevens' career as a television cooking show host and newspaper columnist in Las Vegas, Nevada. Newspaper articles, restaurant reviews, correspondence, ephemera, certificates, and photographs provide information about her career, and to a lesser extent, her personal life. The collection also includes recipes from Stevens' columns, Cooking with Love and The Good Table, as well as recipes from her television show. The collection also includes meeting transcripts and a publication from the Nevada State Dairy Commission, which Stevens served on. Las Vegas' hospitality industry is documented in this collection by hotel publications, event planning records, menus, press kits and ephemera. The collection also includes photographs of Nat Hart at Caesar's Palace and his gourmet cooking school. The Video Recordings series consists mainly of episodes of the Muriel Stevens Show.

Biographical / Historical Note

Muriel Stevens (1925-2016) was a former newspaper columnist, author, chef, community leader, restaurant critic, and radio and television host. Born December 22, 1925 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1954. Stevens is known for her radio and television shows, which focused on food, nutrition, and consumer issues. She hosted a one-hour daily radio talk show for eight years before moving to television, where celebrity guests joined her on The Muriel Stevens Show to cook their favorite meals. She published The Muriel Stevens Cookbook in 1975 and also wrote for the Las Vegas Sun newspaper. Stevens was a founder of the Consumer League of Nevada and served as president of the Nevada Chapter of American Women in Radio and Television. In 1975 she was appointed to the Nevada Dairy Commission by Governor Mike O'Callaghan, and was also later appointed to the Consumer Advisory Council by President Gerald Ford. Muriel Stevens was married to television producer Maury Stevens, with whom she had daughter Robin Stevens Greenspun. Muriel Stevens passed away on December 12, 2016 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
